Chapter 2 - The Name Buried With The Past

The ballroom remained silent.
Not the kind of silence that came from respect.
The kind that came when hundreds of people realized they had just witnessed something they were never supposed to see.
Victor Hale stood frozen near the stage.
His eyes never left Daniel.
Or whoever Daniel really was.
Marcus Vane looked between them, confused and irritated.
"Coach."
His voice cut through the silence.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor didn't answer immediately.
He looked older than he had moments before.
The confidence he carried when he entered the gala was gone.
The man who had trained champions for decades suddenly looked like he had seen a ghost.
I stood beside Daniel, trying to understand what was happening.
A few minutes earlier, everyone in that room believed Marcus Vane was the most dangerous person there.
Now nobody was looking at Marcus.
They were looking at my bodyguard.
The quiet single father everyone ignored.
Daniel slowly stepped away from Marcus.
The movement was calm.
Almost polite.
But the entire room watched him like he was holding a secret weapon.
"Daniel," I whispered.
He looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he would explain everything.
Instead, he simply said:
"We should leave."
That answer shocked me more than anything else.
Not because he wanted to leave.
Because he looked worried.
Daniel Carter had never looked worried before.
Not when angry investors shouted at me.
Not when a stranger followed me after a business meeting.
Not even when someone attempted to break into my office.
But now...
Standing in front of an old fighter who recognized him...
He looked like a man whose past had finally found him.
Before I could respond, Marcus stepped closer.
"Wait."
His voice was no longer mocking.
"Who are you?"
Daniel looked at him.
"I already told you."
"No."
Marcus shook his head.
"You didn't."
The champion pointed toward Victor.
"My coach has seen thousands of fighters."
He lowered his voice.
"He doesn't get scared."
The room became even quieter.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"So who are you?"
Daniel said nothing.
Victor finally moved.
"Marcus."
The champion turned.
"Don't."
One word.
But the way Victor said it made Marcus stop.
Everyone noticed.
The legendary fighter was listening to his coach.
Victor walked closer.
His eyes stayed on Daniel.
"Where did you learn that movement?"
Daniel remained silent.
Victor continued.
"Only three people I know ever used it."
My attention sharpened.
Three people.
Daniel looked away.
Like he didn't want to hear those words.
Victor swallowed.
"Two of them are dead."
The crowd reacted quietly.
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Someone lifted a phone and started recording.
Daniel noticed.
His expression changed slightly.
"Put that away."
His voice was calm.
But something about it made the person immediately lower the phone.
I had heard Daniel give instructions before.
This was different.
This wasn't a request.
It was a command.
Marcus stared at him.
"You trained with people like that?"
Daniel looked at him.
"I used to."
Those three words changed the entire atmosphere.
Used to.
Not "I did."
Not "I know."
Used to.
Like that life was something he had buried.
Victor stepped closer.
"Your name isn't Daniel Carter."
My heart stopped.
Because I realized something.
Victor wasn't guessing.
He knew.
Daniel didn't answer.
Victor looked around the ballroom.
At the executives.
The cameras.
The guests.
Then back at him.
"You disappeared eleven years ago."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Eleven years.
I looked at Daniel.
The man I had hired.
The man I trusted with my safety.
The man who showed me pictures of his daughter and talked about school lunches and weekend plans.
There was another version of him.
A version he had never mentioned.
Victor lowered his voice.
"You were declared dead."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Marcus looked shocked.
"Dead?"
Daniel closed his eyes for a second.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Pain.
A memory.
Something he had spent years trying to escape.
Then he opened his eyes.
And Daniel Carter was back.
Calm.
Controlled.
"I left that life behind."
Victor shook his head.
"You don't get to leave something like that behind."
Daniel looked at him.
"I did."
"No."
Victor's voice became heavier.
"You survived."
That word stayed in the air.
Survived.
Not lived.
Not escaped.
Survived.
I wanted answers.
I deserved answers.
I had trusted Daniel with my life.
But now I wondered how much of his life he had trusted me with.
The host of the gala finally stepped forward, trying to regain control.
"Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps we should continue the event..."
Nobody listened.
The attention remained on Daniel.
Then Marcus laughed quietly.
Not because something was funny.
Because he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"So the quiet bodyguard was actually someone important?"
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
Marcus smiled.
"Then what were you?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Victor did.
"He was the person they sent when nobody else could handle the job."
A chill went through the room.
The guests who had laughed earlier suddenly looked uncomfortable.
The same people who mocked him now avoided eye contact.
Marcus stared.
"What kind of job?"
Victor didn't respond.
Because before he could...
Daniel's phone rang.
The sound was small.
Almost impossible to notice.
But Daniel immediately looked at the screen.
And the color disappeared from his face.
I had never seen him react like that.
Not once.
"Who is it?"
I asked.
He didn't answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Daniel stared at the number.
No name.
No contact.
Just digits.
Then he answered.
He didn't say hello.
He simply listened.
The expression on his face changed.
A few seconds passed.
Then he whispered:
"How did you find me?"
Everyone around him noticed.
The room went silent again.
Daniel listened.
His hand tightened around the phone.
Then the person on the other end said something that made him step backward.
I watched his eyes.
And I knew.
This wasn't about Victor.
It wasn't about Marcus.
It was something much bigger.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
"Who was that?" I asked.
He looked at me.
For the first time since I met him...
He looked afraid.
"It's impossible."
"What is?"
He looked toward the ballroom entrance.
The doors were still closed.
But Daniel wasn't looking at the doors.
He was looking beyond them.
Like he already knew who was coming.
"Because the person who called me..."
He stopped.
I waited.
Everyone waited.
Daniel finally spoke.
"The person who called me died eleven years ago."
A sound came from the entrance.
A security alarm.
Then the main doors slowly opened.
May you like
And standing outside was someone holding an old photograph of Daniel...
Someone who should have been buried long ago.
