Chapter 9 - The Night Sarah Disappeared

I opened the door.
Nobody was there.
An envelope lay on the carpet.
Inside was a DNA kit.
And a note.
FIND OUT WHO YOU ARE.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
But the question had already entered my mind.
Could Victor be my biological father?
My mother was gone.
Thomas was dead.
Only DNA could answer.
I refused Victor’s kit.
Marcus arranged an independent laboratory using archived medical samples from Thomas’s estate.
The result came the next afternoon.
Thomas Hale was my biological father.
Victor had lied.
Why?
Daniel supplied the answer.
“Confusion is leverage.”
Victor wanted me doubting everyone.
My father.
My wife.
Evelyn.
Even myself.
It was working.
Then Sarah disappeared.
Again.
This time from inside our own home.
At 2:13 a.m., a security camera showed her walking through the kitchen.
At 2:16, the feed went dark.
At 2:21, the gate opened.
No vehicle appeared.
She had left on foot.
On her pillow was a note.
DON’T FOLLOW ME.
I nearly tore it in half.
Then Lily entered.
“Mommy left?”
I crouched.
“How did you know?”
“She kissed me.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
“What did she say?”
“That sometimes grown-ups have to finish mistakes.”
My anger became fear.
Sarah had gone voluntarily.
To Victor.
We traced her phone.
She had left it behind.
But she had taken the wedding photograph.
And the ledger.
Or what she thought was the ledger.
I had replaced the original with a copy.
The real one was in a bank vault.
At sunrise, a message arrived from William Cross.
An address.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT SARAH BACK.
Daniel wanted to come.
Marcus wanted a tactical team.
I agreed with both.
I went “alone.”
Marcus followed invisibly.
Daniel monitored from another vehicle.
The address led to an abandoned marina.
The same marina where Daniel’s boat had exploded eight years earlier.
William stood at the end of the dock.
Sarah was beside him.
Unrestrained.
I approached.
“Come here, Sarah.”
She did not move.
William smiled.
“You always were impatient.”
“Where is Victor?”
William laughed.
“You’re still looking for an old man in the shadows.”
Sarah stared at him.
“Stop.”
I understood.
“William is Victor?”
“No,” Sarah said.
William’s smile disappeared.
“He’s his son.”
Silence.
Victor had another child.
William was too old.
Then I realized.
Not biological son.
Protégé.
Successor.
“Victor died three years ago,” Sarah said.
I stared at her.
“Then who has been doing this?”
William.
The answer stood in front of me.
Evelyn had seen “Victor” because William had deliberately revived the identity.
The calls.
The surveillance.
The threats.
He wanted everyone afraid of a ghost.
“Why?”
William shrugged.
“Victor built an empire. Thomas stole it. Charles buried it. Daniel tried to expose it. And you inherited everything.”
“The criminal money?”
“The power.”
“You threatened a child.”
“I applied pressure.”
Sarah slapped him.
William caught her wrist.
I stepped forward.
A red laser appeared on my chest.
Sniper.
I stopped.
William released Sarah.
“The ledger.”
“You already have it.”
He looked at Sarah.
She handed him the copy.
He opened it.
Then smiled.
“You changed the trust.”
Sarah’s face hardened.
“That money belongs to the victims.”
William laughed.
“No. It belongs to whoever survives.”
Behind him, a boat engine started.
He was leaving.
With Sarah.
I saw Marcus reflected in a marina window.
Waiting.
I needed time.
“Victor trusted you?”
William turned.
“He chose me.”
“Then why didn’t he leave you the money?”
That struck something.
His face changed.
I continued.
“He left it to Sarah.”
“Shut up.”
“You spent your life serving a man who gave everything to the daughter he abandoned.”
William pulled a gun.
Marcus moved.
Everything happened at once.
Sarah dropped.
I lunged.
A shot cracked across the marina.
William stumbled.
The gun fell.
Marcus’s team surged from both sides.
But William jumped into the water.
By the time officers reached the edge, he had vanished beneath the dock.
No body surfaced.
Sarah ran into my arms.
“I’m sorry.”
“Later.”
I held her.
Behind us, Daniel shouted.
He had found something inside William’s abandoned bag.
A second phone.
On the screen was a live video feed.
Our house.
Lily’s bedroom.
Her bed was empty.
May you like
Then the camera moved.
Someone was carrying her down the stairs.
