Chapter 13 - The Trap at the Secret Place

She looked older.

Of course she did.

Twelve years older.

But she was my mother.

Margaret Hale.

Alive.

I could not move.

She cried first.

“Jonathan.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

“I can explain.”

“Everyone says that.”

Sarah reached for my hand.

I pulled away—not from her, but because I needed to stand alone for one moment.

“My mother is dead.”

Margaret nodded through tears.

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“You buried an empty casket.”

“Why?”

“Victor found out I was the informant.”

She had spent years feeding evidence to federal investigators.

When Victor discovered it, Thomas staged her death.

Unlike Daniel, Margaret disappeared completely.

Even from her son.

“Why twelve years?”

“Because Victor’s network survived him.”

“When did he die?”

“Three years ago.”

“And William?”

“Took control.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So everybody knew except me.”

“No,” Margaret said. “Almost nobody knew I survived. Not Sarah. Not Evelyn. Not Daniel.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“And then he died.”

“He made me promise not to contact you until the network was gone.”

“You kept that promise after they targeted my daughter?”

Her face broke.

“That’s why I came back.”

I wanted to be angry forever.

But twelve years of grief stood between us.

There would be time for anger.

If we survived.

Margaret had something William wanted even more than the ledger.

Testimony.

She had met Victor’s bankers.

Recorded transactions.

Identified intermediaries.

Her return could destroy the remaining network.

So we used it.

We leaked that Margaret would meet me at Daniel’s secret building.

The location William already knew.

Federal agents surrounded the district invisibly.

Margaret remained elsewhere.

I entered the building alone.

Or appeared to.

Marcus was in the archive room.

Agents covered every exit.

At 8:06 p.m., the steel door opened.

William walked inside.

No mask.

No hesitation.

“You finally found Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Nobody is safe.”

“You keep saying things like that because fear is all you inherited from Victor.”

His jaw tightened.

“He built something your father could never understand.”

“He built a criminal network.”

“He built loyalty.”

“He threatened children.”

William stared at me.

“You think Lily matters to me?”

My hands clenched.

“She was leverage.”

“Say that again.”

Marcus’s voice came through my hidden earpiece.

Easy.

William smiled.

“You’re exactly like Thomas.”

“I hope not.”

That surprised him.

“My father lied to me. Manipulated evidence. Broke laws. He thought protecting family justified anything.”

“And you?”

“I’m ending it differently.”

I stepped back.

Agents entered.

William turned toward the rear exit.

Locked.

He reached inside his jacket.

Marcus tackled him before he could draw.

The fight lasted seconds.

William ended facedown on concrete.

Handcuffed.

Finished.

Or so we thought.

His phone rang.

Federal agents answered.

Richard Vale.

Calling from custody.

He wanted a deal.

And he had one final piece of information.

William was not planning to destroy the house merely to eliminate evidence.

Something was hidden beneath it.

Something Thomas had placed there decades earlier.

A backup ledger.

And William had already hired another man to retrieve it.

The man was still on the property.

I called Sarah.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Lily answered Sarah’s phone.

“Daddy?”

“Where’s Mommy?”

“She went downstairs.”

“Where?”

“To the old wine room.”

My blood froze.

“Lily, stay where you are.”

“But Daddy—”

“Stay with Grandma.”

I ran for the door.

May you like

Then Lily whispered:

“Mommy said somebody was already down there.”
