Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Money

I do not remember the drive home.

Only fragments.

Marcus shouting into a radio.

Sarah beside me saying Lily’s name.

Daniel calling Evelyn.

No answer.

When we arrived, the front gate was open.

One security guard was unconscious.

The house was silent.

“Lily!”

Nothing.

I ran upstairs.

Her room was empty.

The window was locked.

On the floor lay her stuffed rabbit.

Sarah picked it up and broke.

I could not.

Not yet.

Marcus found footage from a backup camera.

At 5:42 a.m., Evelyn entered Lily’s room.

She carried her downstairs.

Lily was asleep.

They left through the service entrance.

Evelyn had taken her.

Sarah stared at the screen.

“My mother?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“What do you mean no?”

“She’s protecting her.”

“How?”

Daniel pointed at the footage.

“Look.”

Evelyn deliberately turned toward the camera.

Then held up four fingers.

One.

Seven.

Four.

The partial license number Lily had remembered.

A message.

Marcus ran the plate again.

This time, not searching vehicles.

Addresses.

Storage units.

Businesses.

One match appeared.

417 Harbor Road.

The secret building.

Daniel’s building.

We drove there.

The steel door stood open.

Inside, we found Evelyn and Lily.

Safe.

Lily ran to me.

I lifted her off the ground.

“Daddy!”

I buried my face in her hair.

“You never leave without telling me again.”

“Grandma said the bad man was coming.”

Evelyn approached.

“He was.”

“How did you know?”

“William called.”

Sarah stared at her mother.

“You knew?”

“I knew he was Victor’s chosen successor.”

“You let us believe Victor was alive.”

“I wasn’t sure he wasn’t.”

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Then Lily tugged my collar.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“There was another man.”

The room went quiet.

“What other man?”

“When Grandma brought me here.”

Evelyn frowned.

“No one else was here.”

“Yes.”

Lily pointed toward the archive room.

“He went in there.”

Daniel ran.

The archive door was locked.

From inside.

He unlocked it.

Empty.

Then he saw the rear panel.

Open.

A hidden exit.

Someone had entered while we were focused on William.

The original target had never been Sarah.

Or Lily.

Or even the ledger.

It was Daniel’s archive.

One box was missing.

THOMAS HALE — PRIVATE.

My father’s remaining evidence.

Security footage showed a hooded man leaving minutes before we arrived.

Marcus enhanced one frame.

The face was partially visible.

I recognized him.

Peter.

My driver.

But Peter was in police custody.

Marcus confirmed it.

“This isn’t Peter.”

“Then who?”

Daniel enlarged the image.

The resemblance was extraordinary.

Brothers.

We investigated Peter’s family.

He had an older brother.

Michael Vale.

Different surname.

Same mother.

And Michael’s father was Richard Vale.

Richard’s son.

The network was larger than we thought.

William was not alone.

Richard had not been merely an employee.

He had been building a second generation of Victor’s organization.

Money moved through families.

Loyalty passed from father to son.

Michael had the missing box.

Inside it, according to Daniel’s inventory, was my father’s final recorded testimony.

Evidence that could dismantle everything.

That evening, Michael contacted me.

One message.

COME TO THE OLD HALE FACTORY.

Then:

BRING SARAH.

I replied:

NO.

His answer came immediately.

THEN LISTEN.

An audio file appeared.

My father’s voice.

“Jonathan, if you ever hear this, the man you need to fear most is not Victor Shaw.”

Static.

Then:

“It is the man who convinced us Victor was acting alone.”

The recording cut.

Another message appeared.

Michael wrote:

WANT THE REST?

A photograph followed.

My father sat at a table with Richard Vale.

William Cross.

Charles Mercer.

And one final man.

The final man had his back to the camera.

Sarah looked over my shoulder.

Her face drained of color.

“I know that jacket.”

“Whose?”

May you like

She stared at me.

“Daniel’s.”
