THE RING SHE LEFT BEHIND / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Night Everything Changed

"Stay with me," Luca said.

Valentina couldn't answer.

Doctors surrounded her.

The baby's heart rate had fallen sharply.

A nurse moved Luca aside.

He resisted for half a second.

Then he remembered.

This wasn't about control.

He moved.

The doctor explained they needed an emergency cesarean delivery.

Valentina looked at Luca.

Fear erased every argument between them.

Not forgiveness.

Not history.

Just two people terrified for their child.

"Go," Luca said.

Her hand tightened around his.

"Come with me."

He did.

Minutes became fragments.

Bright lights.

Masks.

Instructions.

Luca sat beside Valentina's head.

He whispered whatever came to mind.

The first apartment they rented.

The burned pasta she pretended was edible.

The morning she told him she was pregnant.

The name they had secretly considered.

Sofia.

After Valentina's mother.

Then a sound filled the operating room.

A cry.

Small.

Furious.

Perfect.

Valentina began sobbing.

Luca did too.

Their daughter arrived early but strong.

When the nurse placed Sofia against Valentina's chest, Luca looked at them and understood something that no empire had ever taught him.

Nothing he owned mattered.

Not beside this.

Valentina looked at him.

"She's tiny."

"She's loud."

"Like you."

"Hopefully smarter."

Valentina laughed weakly.

For a few minutes, there were no Bellandis.

No Morettis.

No frozen accounts.

No mistress.

No Richard.

Just Luca, Valentina, and Sofia.

But healing was not the same as forgetting.

Valentina made that clear.

After leaving the hospital, she returned to the Moretti estate.

Luca returned to his apartment.

He visited Sofia according to Valentina's schedule.

Never unannounced.

Never late.

He changed diapers badly.

Then less badly.

He learned bottles.

He walked Sofia through the garden when she refused to sleep.

Sometimes Valentina watched from the window.

Luca never knew.

Three months later, Richard's trial approached.

Rebecca called.

"We have a problem."

Valentina had learned to hate that sentence.

"What?"

"Richard's attorneys are claiming the ledger was manipulated."

"It wasn't."

"We know."

"Then?"

"They say the original chain of custody is compromised."

"Because Elena had it?"

"Yes."

Valentina closed her eyes.

"What do they need?"

"Independent corroboration."

"From whom?"

"Evelyn Vale."

Valentina frowned.

"She's dead."

Rebecca paused.

"We may have been wrong."

The old nightmare returned.

People who were dead refusing to stay dead.

"What are you saying?"

"Investigators found evidence Evelyn entered witness protection after the alleged accident."

Valentina stood.

"Serena thinks her mother is dead."

"So does Gabriel."

"Where is she?"

"We don't know."

They searched.

Vittorio helped.

Elena searched old records.

Serena returned from California.

For the first time, she and Valentina worked together without Luca between them.

Eventually they found a clue.

A bank account receiving one annual payment.

Always on Serena's birthday.

The recipient was listed as Elizabeth Vance.

They traced the account to Maine.

Serena went with Valentina.

A small house stood near the coast.

Serena couldn't approach the door.

"What if it isn't her?"

Valentina looked at her.

"What if it is?"

Serena began crying.

Valentina took her hand.

They knocked.

An older woman opened the door.

She looked at Serena.

The grocery bag fell from her hands.

"Mom?"

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Serena collapsed into her arms.

Valentina stepped away.

Some reunions deserved privacy.

Evelyn eventually told them the truth.

Richard had tried to kill her.

Federal investigators staged her death because they believed the network reached powerful people.

She stayed hidden because Richard threatened her children.

But now Richard was in custody.

And Evelyn was ready to testify.

The case collapsed around him.

Richard accepted a plea that would keep him imprisoned for decades.

Evelyn's name was publicly cleared.

Vittorio testified too.

He admitted his role in covering up the scandal.

Elena did the same.

Nobody escaped responsibility simply because their intentions had once been described as protection.

That mattered to Valentina.

Six months after the gala, Bellandi Holdings emerged from restructuring.

Smaller.

Cleaner.

Transparent.

The board asked Valentina to become chairwoman.

She accepted.

They asked Luca to return as CEO.

He declined.

Valentina found out later.

"Why?" she asked him during one of his visits with Sofia.

Luca held their daughter against his chest.

"Because I don't want the company back."

"You spent your whole life building it."

"I spent my whole life believing building it made me valuable."

"And now?"

Sofia grabbed his nose.

Luca smiled.

"Now I have a six-month-old who thinks my greatest purpose is making stupid noises."

Valentina smiled despite herself.

He looked at her.

"I'd like to build something new."

"What?"

"I don't know yet."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Luca said:

"I filed the divorce papers."

Valentina's smile vanished.

"What?"

"You asked Rebecca to prepare them months ago."

"I didn't file them."

"I know."

"So why did you?"

"Because I don't want you staying married to me because paperwork is inconvenient."

He placed a folder on the table.

"I signed everything. No challenge. No claim against your shares. Full custody terms however you want them."

Valentina stared at him.

"You're giving up?"

"No."

His answer was gentle.

"I'm giving you the choice I should've respected from the beginning."

He kissed Sofia's forehead.

Then he handed her to Valentina.

"I love you."

Valentina stopped.

Luca continued.

"I don't expect that to fix anything."

She said nothing.

"I'll always regret what I did at that gala. I wanted to make you feel small because I felt small beside the woman you were becoming."

Valentina's eyes filled.

"That's not love."

"No."

"What you did wasn't love."

"I know."

"Love doesn't humiliate."

"I know."

"Love doesn't control."

"I know."

She looked at the divorce papers.

"Then why tell me you love me?"

"Because learning how badly I loved you doesn't mean I stopped."

He walked toward the door.

Valentina wanted to call him back.

She didn't.

He opened it.

Then the doorbell rang.

Luca frowned.

Thomas appeared from the hallway.

"I'll get it."

He checked the security screen.

His expression changed.

Valentina noticed.

"What?"

Thomas didn't answer.

"Who is it?"

He turned the screen.

Elena stood outside.

Beside her was Vittorio.

And between them stood Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca was holding an envelope.

Across the front, in Alessandro Moretti's handwriting, were the words:

TO VALENTINA AND LUCA — OPEN ONLY AFTER THE TRUTH IS KNOWN.

Valentina looked at Luca.

Luca looked at her.

Thomas opened the door.

Rebecca entered and placed the envelope between them.

"The estate attorney found this inside your father's final safe-deposit box."

Valentina touched the seal.

It had never been broken.

She slowly slid one finger beneath the flap.

Inside was a letter.

And behind the letter was a photograph neither Valentina nor Luca had ever seen.

Valentina pulled it out.

Her breath caught.

Luca stepped closer.

The photograph showed Alessandro Moretti standing beside a much younger Luca.

On the back, Alessandro had written one final message.

Valentina read the first sentence aloud.

Then she stopped.

May you like

Because the second sentence revealed what her father had known about Luca before their wedding.

And Luca had never known it himself...
