Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Was Erased

Valentina read the message twice.
"What I did?"
Luca heard her through the phone.
"Don't go."
She didn't answer.
"Valentina."
"I need to know what he means."
"That's exactly why he wrote it."
Vittorio agreed.
"Richard wants you frightened."
Valentina looked at Elena.
"What happened eleven years ago?"
Elena shook her head.
"I've told you everything."
"No, you haven't."
Valentina remembered her wedding year.
One event suddenly returned.
A car accident.
Three weeks before the wedding.
She had been driving home from her father's office when another vehicle ran a red light.
She woke in a hospital.
Her father said the other driver fled.
She had suffered a concussion.
Several days of memory were fragmented.
"What happened after my accident?"
Elena looked down.
Valentina knew.
"What did I sign?"
Elena whispered:
"More than the acknowledgment."
Vittorio slammed his hand against the table.
"Elena!"
"I didn't have a choice."
"You always had a choice."
Valentina stepped between them.
"What did I sign?"
Elena answered.
"A settlement."
"With Richard?"
"Yes."
"What settlement?"
"You transferred him ten percent of your future distributions."
Valentina stared.
"Why?"
"Because he threatened your father."
"Then why don't I remember?"
"You were recovering."
Valentina felt nauseated.
"My father let you put legal documents in front of me after a concussion?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Elena began crying.
"I did."
Silence.
Valentina stepped backward.
She had spent years thinking Elena vanished because of grief.
Now she understood.
Her father had banished her.
"Did he find out?"
"After your wedding."
"And that's why you disappeared."
"Yes."
Valentina turned away.
Another person who loved her.
Another betrayal disguised as protection.
Her baby kicked hard.
She pressed both hands to her belly.
This child would not grow up inside secrets.
That decision became absolute.
"Call Rebecca."
Elena looked up.
"Why?"
"We're not hiding anything."
"But the settlement—"
"Everything."
"If Richard exposes—"
"I'll expose it first."
Vittorio smiled faintly.
Valentina looked at him.
"What?"
"Your father would've hated that."
"Good."
"He would've respected it too."
Within an hour, Rebecca prepared a disclosure for the court.
Every hidden agreement.
Every questionable transfer.
Every piece of evidence.
Valentina would rather risk losing the empire than preserve it through another lie.
Then she called Luca.
"I'm going to Terminal 9."
"No."
"You don't get to tell me what to do."
"Fine. I'm asking."
"I'm still going."
"Then I'm coming."
"Richard said alone."
"And Richard is a liar."
Valentina almost smiled.
Almost.
"Stay out of sight."
"I can do that."
"You've never done anything out of sight in your life."
"Tonight seems good for personal growth."
The tiny flash of their old rhythm hurt.
At 10:30 p.m., Valentina arrived at Terminal 9.
The warehouse sat beside black water.
She carried the ledger.
Thomas remained several blocks away.
Luca, Matteo, Serena, and Vittorio were positioned elsewhere.
Nobody trusted anyone completely.
Perhaps that was safest.
Valentina entered.
Gabriel Vale sat beneath a hanging light.
Alive.
Richard Moretti stepped from the shadows.
He was older than Valentina.
Early forties.
Dark hair streaked with gray.
Their father's eyes.
That disturbed her most.
"Hello, little sister."
"Don't call me that."
He smiled.
"You look like Mother."
"Release Gabriel."
"The ledger."
She held it up.
"First him."
Richard laughed.
"Definitely Father's daughter."
"You mean the father you tried to steal from?"
His smile disappeared.
"He stole from me."
"He removed you because you framed Evelyn."
"Evelyn was weak."
A sound came from the darkness.
Serena heard it through the hidden transmitter.
Her face tightened.
Richard continued.
"Father chose strangers over his own son."
"You destroyed an innocent woman's life."
"She discovered something that didn't concern her."
"She was Serena's mother."
"And now Serena has spent twelve years serving me because guilt is such a useful leash."
Serena closed her eyes.
Luca looked at her.
"Stay here."
"No."
"If he sees you—"
"That's my brother."
Before Luca could stop her, Serena entered the warehouse.
Richard smiled.
"Predictable."
"Let Gabriel go."
"Serena."
"You lied about my mother."
"I gave you purpose."
"You used me."
"So did Luca."
Luca stepped from the shadows.
"Not tonight."
Valentina looked at him angrily.
"I told you—"
"I know."
Richard laughed.
"The famous Luca Bellandi."
Luca approached slowly.
"You wanted an audience."
"No. I wanted your wife."
Luca's expression changed.
Richard corrected himself.
"Her shares."
Valentina raised the ledger.
"You'll never get them."
"I already have ten percent."
"The settlement was signed while I was medically impaired."
"Prove it."
"We will."
Richard's smile faded slightly.
"We?"
Valentina looked at Luca.
Not lovingly.
Not forgivingly.
But deliberately.
"You made the mistake everyone makes."
"What?"
"You assumed betrayal made me stupid."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Give me the ledger."
"Release Gabriel."
Richard gestured.
A guard cut Gabriel's restraints.
Serena ran to him.
Then Richard extended his hand.
"The book."
Valentina walked forward.
Luca tensed.
She handed Richard the ledger.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Blank pages.
He flipped faster.
Nothing.
"What is this?"
Valentina smiled.
"A copy."
Richard looked up.
"The original was delivered to federal investigators forty minutes ago."
His expression broke.
"You—"
"And Rebecca filed every hidden agreement."
"You'll destroy your own family."
"No."
Valentina rested a hand over her belly.
"I'm ending the habit of protecting it with lies."
Richard stepped toward her.
Luca moved instantly between them.
Richard stopped.
Sirens sounded outside.
Serena stared at Valentina.
"You called them?"
"No."
Vittorio stepped into view.
"I did."
Richard looked at him.
"You."
Vittorio's voice hardened.
"This ended years ago."
Richard laughed.
"You staged your death because you were afraid of me."
"Yes."
The admission stunned him.
Vittorio continued.
"And I've regretted it every day."
Police entered.
Richard didn't resist.
As officers handcuffed him, he looked at Valentina.
"You think this ends with me?"
She said nothing.
Richard smiled.
"Ask Luca about Delaware."
Luca froze.
Valentina saw it.
Richard was taken away.
She turned slowly.
"What about Delaware?"
Luca looked toward Serena.
Serena looked down.
Valentina's heart sank.
"What?"
Luca spoke carefully.
"One of the companies Richard used..."
"What about it?"
"I bought it."
"When?"
"Eight months ago."
"Why?"
"I thought it was a legitimate acquisition."
Valentina stared at him.
"With whose money?"
Luca didn't answer.
She already knew.
"Mine."
"Valentina—"
"You used my trust."
"I intended to replace it."
"Without asking me."
"Yes."
Her face went still.
Luca took a step closer.
"I didn't know Richard controlled the company."
"But you knew the money wasn't yours."
He couldn't answer.
Valentina handed the ledger copy to Rebecca, who had just entered with investigators.
Then she looked at Luca.
"You keep saying you didn't know."
"I didn't."
"But every lie still begins with something you did know."
She walked away.
Luca didn't follow.
This time, he understood he hadn't earned that right.
At 2:15 a.m., Valentina returned to her father's estate.
Exhaustion finally hit.
Elena had left.
Vittorio remained with investigators.
Thomas checked every room.
Valentina climbed the stairs.
Her old bedroom had been prepared.
She opened the door.
A small package sat on her pillow.
Thomas immediately stepped in front of her.
"Nobody was supposed to be upstairs."
Valentina stared at the box.
There was no name.
No postage.
Thomas opened it carefully.
Inside was a key.
Old.
Brass.
Attached to it was a paper tag.
A handwritten message covered one side.
Valentina recognized her father's handwriting.
IF RICHARD RETURNS, OPEN THE ROOM BENEATH THE CHAPEL.
She turned the tag over.
There was another sentence.
Shorter.
IF LUCA IS WITH YOU, DO NOT LET HIM INSIDE.
Valentina stared at the words.
Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Thomas turned.
Luca stood at the top of the stairs.
His eyes dropped to the key in Valentina's hand.
May you like
And he whispered:
"I know what that opens."
