Chapter 5 - The Room Beneath the Chapel

Valentina didn't move.
"How?"
Luca looked at the note.
"Your father showed me the door once."
"When?"
"The night before our wedding."
Valentina's anger returned instantly.
"Of course he did."
"I never went inside."
"But you knew it existed."
"Yes."
"And never told me."
"No."
Thomas looked between them.
Valentina almost laughed.
Every road led to another secret.
"What did my father say?"
Luca remembered.
Alessandro had taken him to the family chapel after midnight.
He showed Luca a stone door hidden beneath the altar.
"If my daughter ever asks about this room," Alessandro said, "you tell her to walk away."
"Why?"
"Because some truths destroy families."
At twenty-seven, Luca had respected the older man's authority.
Now he understood the damage behind the philosophy.
"What did you say?" Valentina asked.
"I promised."
"Another man decided what I was allowed to know, and you helped him."
"Yes."
No defense.
Again.
Valentina noticed.
"Why does the note say not to let you inside?"
"I don't know."
She studied him.
For once, she believed that.
They went to the chapel at dawn.
Thomas accompanied them.
Valentina inserted the brass key beneath the altar.
A hidden lock clicked.
The stone panel opened.
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Luca stopped.
"I'll stay here."
Valentina looked at him.
"You could come."
"Your father specifically said I shouldn't."
"Since when do you respect boundaries?"
The question hurt.
He accepted it.
"Since I learned what happens when I don't."
Valentina descended with Thomas.
The room below contained filing cabinets, photographs, and one steel safe.
On the desk was an envelope.
FOR VALENTINA.
She opened it.
My daughter,
If you're reading this, then I failed to keep the past buried.
Valentina closed her eyes.
Even dead, her father began with concealment.
She continued.
I thought secrecy was protection. I was wrong.
That sentence surprised her.
The letter explained everything.
Richard had manipulated both families.
Vittorio had discovered him.
Evelyn had collected evidence.
Alessandro tried to handle it privately because exposing Richard would destroy the Moretti name.
That hesitation gave Richard time.
Evelyn died.
Vittorio nearly did.
Alessandro spent the rest of his life regretting his cowardice.
Then came the final revelation.
Luca had unknowingly benefited from one of Richard's earliest transfers.
Part of the money Alessandro used to save Bellandi Holdings had been contaminated by stolen funds.
If exposed without context, Luca could appear complicit.
That was why Alessandro told him never to enter.
He wanted Valentina to decide what happened to the evidence.
She found a drive inside the safe.
Every transaction.
Every name.
Enough to clear Evelyn.
Enough to prove Vittorio had not stolen the money.
Enough to expose Richard.
And enough to show Bellandi Holdings had been built partly on money that never belonged to the Bellandis.
Valentina returned upstairs.
Luca waited.
"Well?"
"We're releasing everything."
His face remained calm.
"Okay."
She blinked.
"That's it?"
"What else should I say?"
"You could lose the company."
"So?"
She stared.
Eleven years earlier, Luca would have chosen her.
Five years earlier, she wasn't sure.
One week earlier, she knew he would have chosen the company.
Now he looked exhausted.
"I almost lost you because I treated everything like something to possess," he said. "I'm not doing it again."
Valentina felt something shift.
Not forgiveness.
But perhaps the first brick of a bridge.
They gave the evidence to investigators.
By afternoon, financial news exploded.
Bellandi shares dropped.
Board members panicked.
Reporters surrounded the tower.
Luca held a press conference.
Valentina watched from her father's library.
He stood alone.
No attorneys beside him.
No carefully smiling Serena.
No pregnant wife used as proof of stability.
Luca admitted unauthorized use of trust funds.
He accepted responsibility for transactions he had approved.
He announced an independent audit.
Then he resigned temporarily as chief executive.
Valentina sat forward.
He hadn't told her.
A reporter shouted:
"Mr. Bellandi, did your wife force you to resign?"
Luca looked toward the cameras.
"No."
"Is she divorcing you?"
"That's her decision."
"Did she freeze the company accounts?"
"Yes."
"Are you angry?"
Luca paused.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because she protected a company I was too arrogant to realize I was endangering."
Valentina's eyes filled.
Luca continued.
"My wife owed me loyalty. I confused that with obedience. Those aren't the same thing."
He left.
No performance.
No excuse.
That evening, Serena visited Valentina.
Gabriel was safe.
Serena looked completely different without the gown, makeup, and ballroom confidence.
"I'm leaving."
"Where?"
"California."
"Gabriel?"
"Coming with me."
Valentina nodded.
Serena placed something on the table.
The diamond ring.
Valentina stared.
"Luca had it."
"Why do you have it?"
"He asked me to return it."
"Why didn't he?"
Serena smiled sadly.
"He said seeing him would make it feel like pressure."
Valentina touched the ring but didn't pick it up.
Serena turned to leave.
"Serena."
She stopped.
"Did you love him?"
Serena thought about it.
"No."
"Did he love you?"
"No."
Valentina appreciated the answer.
Serena continued.
"But he wanted me to look at him the way you used to."
Valentina said nothing.
"That's why he danced with me."
"I know."
"He kept watching you."
That hurt differently.
"Goodbye, Serena."
"Goodbye."
Weeks passed.
Richard remained in custody.
The audit expanded.
Valentina moved permanently into the Moretti estate.
Luca did not ask her to return.
He sent updates about the company through Rebecca.
Nothing personal.
He attended counseling.
Valentina learned because Matteo accidentally mentioned it.
She pretended not to care.
She cared.
At eight months pregnant, she attended the first independent board meeting.
Luca sat at the far end.
He stood when she entered.
So did everyone else.
Valentina frowned.
"Sit down."
They did.
The audit revealed Bellandi Holdings could survive.
But only through restructuring.
Several divisions would be sold.
Illegal transfers would be reversed.
Evelyn Vale's estate would receive restitution.
Employee pensions would remain protected.
Valentina approved the plan.
Then the board chairman cleared his throat.
"There's one final matter."
A folder was placed before her.
"What is it?"
"Luca Bellandi transferred his personal voting shares."
Valentina looked at Luca.
"To whom?"
The chairman answered.
"Your unborn child."
She stared at Luca.
"Why?"
He spoke quietly.
"Because one day our child should inherit something cleaner than what we received."
Valentina's throat tightened.
"You could have told me."
"I wasn't sure you'd approve."
"So you did it anyway?"
His face fell.
Then she added:
"I'm joking."
For the first time in months, Luca laughed.
It was brief.
Real.
And dangerous to her defenses.
After the meeting, they walked toward the elevator.
Luca kept a respectful distance.
"How are you feeling?"
"Pregnant."
"I deserved that."
"Yes."
The elevator arrived.
Valentina stepped inside.
Luca remained outside.
"Aren't you coming?"
"I'll take the next one."
"Why?"
"You said you needed space."
She looked at him.
"An elevator isn't reconciliation, Luca."
"I know."
"Get in."
He did.
They stood silently.
Halfway down, Valentina suddenly inhaled.
Luca turned.
"What?"
She looked down.
A dark patch spread across the bottom of her gown.
His face went white.
"Valentina?"
Another contraction hit.
She grabbed the railing.
Luca reached toward her, then stopped himself.
"Can I touch you?"
Even in pain, she noticed the question.
"Yes."
He took her hand.
The elevator doors opened.
Luca shouted for help.
Three hours later, Valentina was in a hospital room.
The baby was early.
Doctors moved quickly.
Luca stayed outside because she hadn't invited him in.
Then a nurse approached.
"Mr. Bellandi?"
He stood.
"Your wife is asking for you."
He entered.
Valentina looked exhausted.
Terrified.
Beautiful.
Luca took her hand.
"I'm here."
She squeezed hard.
"If you ever dance with another woman again, I'll kill you."
He laughed through tears.
"Fair."
Hours passed.
Then alarms changed.
Doctors began moving faster.
Luca's smile disappeared.
"What is happening?"
Nobody answered him.
Valentina looked at the monitor.
A doctor called for another specialist.
Luca tightened his grip.
May you like
Then the fetal heartbeat suddenly dropped.
And the entire room erupted into motion.
