Chapter 6 - The Person Who Knew My Husband's Secret

The figure stepped into the hallway, and I whispered:

"Emily?"

When Claire Bennett saw her husband's secretary standing inside her home, she realized the woman she blamed for destroying her marriage had been hiding something much bigger.

But in Emily Carter’s hand was a folder containing the original evidence Maria had discovered years ago.

And written on the first page was a name Claire never expected to see.

Claire suddenly understood that the person closest to Daniel had never been his enemy.

She had been his last warning.

I stared at Emily standing in the hallway.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Eleanor.

Not me.

The woman I had imagined as the reason my marriage was falling apart was standing inside my home holding a folder that looked older than my entire relationship with Daniel.

She looked nothing like the person I had created in my mind.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't confident.

She wasn't the woman who had stolen my husband's attention.

She looked terrified.

"Emily," Daniel said quietly.

His voice wasn't angry.

It was worried.

That was when I knew.

This wasn't a confrontation between a husband and his mistress.

Something else was happening.

Something much darker.

Emily looked at Daniel.

"I told you this day would come."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You shouldn't have come here."

She laughed softly.

Not because something was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Emily."

"No."

She looked at me.

"Claire deserves the truth."

My heart tightened.

The truth.

That word had followed me for days.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me from it.

Everyone claimed the truth would hurt me.

But nobody understood something.

The lies had already hurt me.

I looked at Emily.

"Why are you here?"

She held the folder closer.

"Because Maria wanted you to have this."

I froze.

"Maria?"

Emily nodded.

"She knew you would eventually find out."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time, I saw desperation in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not control.

Desperation.

"Daniel," I said quietly.

"What are you hiding now?"

He didn't answer.

Emily walked closer and handed me the folder.

I hesitated before taking it.

Because somehow, I knew this wasn't just another secret.

This was the thing everyone had been afraid of.

I opened it.

The first page was a company report.

The second page was a list of financial transactions.

The third page was a photograph.

A photograph of Victor Hale.

My eyes moved down.

Then I saw the date.

Eight years ago.

Before my wedding.

Before my life with Daniel began.

"He was involved from the beginning," Emily said.

I looked at her.

"Victor?"

She nodded.

"He wasn't just stealing from Daniel's company."

"Then what was he doing?"

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Ask him."

I turned toward my husband.

Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.

Finally, he spoke.

"Victor was using the company to move illegal money."

I stared at him.

"And you knew?"

"I found out."

"When?"

Daniel looked away.

"The week before our engagement."

My chest tightened.

The week before our engagement.

The same time everything started changing.

The late nights.

The secrets.

The phone calls.

All of it.

"You could have told me."

Daniel swallowed.

"I wanted to."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

His voice became quieter.

"Because Victor knew about you."

The room went silent.

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel walked toward the window.

"He knew you were my weakness."

I hated that word.

Weakness.

Because I wasn't a weakness.

I was his wife.

But Daniel continued.

"Victor threatened anyone who tried to expose him."

Emily opened the folder again.

"He didn't just threaten Daniel."

She pulled out another document.

"He threatened Maria."

I looked at the paper.

It was a police report.

Maria Bellamy.

A witness statement.

My hands trembled.

"What happened to her?"

Emily looked down.

"She disappeared."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

"After the accident, Maria realized someone was following her. She gave Daniel copies of the evidence and went into hiding."

"Then why did Daniel pay for her?"

Daniel answered.

"Because I promised her I would protect her and her daughter."

I looked at him.

"And Emily?"

She looked at me.

"I was helping Daniel find Victor."

The room became completely silent.

The woman I believed had destroyed my marriage had been working with my husband to expose someone else.

But that still didn't explain everything.

I looked at Daniel.

"The car."

His face changed.

I knew I had reached the question he wanted to avoid.

"The underwear."

Emily lowered her eyes.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Claire..."

"No."

My voice shook.

"Don't say my name like that."

I stepped closer.

"I found another woman's underwear in your car."

Nobody spoke.

"I thought you betrayed me."

Daniel looked broken.

"That night wasn't what you think."

"Then tell me."

He took a breath.

"Emily was in the car because we were meeting someone."

"Who?"

"Victor's accountant."

I stared at him.

"Why was her underwear there?"

Emily answered.

"Because someone planted it."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She nodded.

"Victor knew you were suspicious of Daniel. He wanted you to believe the affair story."

My mind struggled to process everything.

Someone had intentionally destroyed my trust.

Someone wanted me to hate Daniel.

Someone wanted me to walk away.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because if you left me, I would have nothing stopping me from exposing Victor."

I shook my head.

"You mean he wanted to control you."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

I looked around the room.

The people standing there had all been fighting a battle I never knew existed.

But one question remained.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because the moment Victor knew you knew, you became a target."

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But beneath the anger was something else.

A terrible realization.

Maybe Daniel had lied because he was afraid.

Maybe he had made terrible choices.

But he wasn't the only person who had been hiding something.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened the message.

This time, there was no warning.

No threat.

Only a video.

Recorded from outside my house.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Victor Hale standing in the street.

Looking directly at the camera.

Then he spoke.

"Claire."

My blood went cold.

"You finally know the truth."

The video continued.

Victor smiled.

"But there is one thing Daniel never told you."

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Don't watch it."

Too late.

The video showed Victor holding a document.

A birth certificate.

Then he said:

"The reason Daniel protected Maria wasn't because of the accident."

Everyone became silent.

Victor lifted the document toward the camera.

"It was because the child she was protecting belonged to him."

My fingers went numb.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

He looked away.

And that was when I knew.

Victor had just revealed the secret Daniel was still hiding.

I stepped backward.

"Daniel..."

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the front door downstairs suddenly slammed open.

A voice echoed through the house.

"Claire."

We all froze.

Because the voice wasn't Victor's.

May you like

It was Maria's.

And she was standing downstairs.
