Chapter 5 - The Secret Daniel Was Willing To Destroy

The bedroom door opened slowly, and I whispered:

"Daniel?"

When Claire Bennett saw her husband standing outside with a frightened expression, she realized he had not come home to apologize.

But in his hand was the same photograph she had found hidden in his laptop.

And behind him stood someone she never expected to see.

Claire suddenly understood that Daniel had been hiding the truth from everyone, even himself.

I stared at Daniel standing in the doorway.

For the first time in eight years, I didn't recognize the man in front of me.

Not because he looked different.

Because I finally saw the fear behind his eyes.

The confident businessman was gone.

The man who controlled meetings, negotiated million-dollar deals, and convinced everyone he had the perfect life was standing there unable to speak.

His mother was still beside me.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them looked away.

Then Daniel slowly lifted the photograph in his hand.

"You found it."

It wasn't a question.

I crossed my arms.

"You knew I would."

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

His expression changed instantly.

"Mom."

One word.

But it carried anger.

Betrayal.

Fear.

Eleanor stood up.

"She deserved to know."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. You don't understand."

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

You don't understand.

You don't know the truth.

You don't know what happened.

But somehow, I was always the last person allowed to know anything about my own life.

I stepped closer.

"Then explain."

Daniel looked at me.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

I saw him searching for the right words.

The same way he always did.

Carefully.

Strategically.

Like every conversation was a negotiation.

"Claire..."

"No."

My voice surprised even me.

"No more half-truths."

The room became silent.

"I found the accounts."

Daniel's face changed.

"I found Maria's files."

His eyes moved toward the laptop.

"I found the video."

A long pause.

"And I found out that everyone around me knew something except me."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I never wanted you involved."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"What question?"

I looked directly at him.

"Who is Maria Bellamy?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

And that reaction told me everything.

She mattered.

More than he wanted to admit.

Finally, he walked into the room and closed the door behind him.

Not locked.

Not hidden.

Just closed.

A small gesture.

But somehow, it felt like the first honest thing he had done.

"Maria was my employee."

I waited.

"Eight years ago, she discovered something inside the company."

"What?"

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

His mother nodded.

"Tell her."

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Someone inside my company was stealing money."

I frowned.

"Someone?"

He nodded.

"Millions."

The number didn't surprise me.

The fact that he knew did.

"Maria found the evidence."

"And then?"

Daniel looked away.

"She was going to expose them."

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Daniel."

His jaw tightened.

"The person responsible was someone powerful."

That wasn't an answer.

It was another wall.

"What happened the night of the accident?"

Daniel became still.

I knew I had reached the part he feared.

"The accident wasn't supposed to happen."

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Maria was driving home with the documents."

He looked at his hands.

"Someone followed her."

I listened.

"My car was behind hers."

I froze.

"You were there."

Daniel nodded.

"I saw the other vehicle."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"I tried to help."

His voice cracked slightly.

"I followed them."

The room felt smaller.

"Maria lost control of her car."

"Because of you?"

Daniel immediately looked at me.

"No."

But the speed of his answer made me question it.

"No. Claire, listen. I wasn't chasing her. I was trying to protect her."

"Then why hide it?"

Daniel looked broken.

"Because after the accident, I found out someone inside my company caused it."

"Who?"

Again.

Silence.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

Then Eleanor spoke.

"Your husband was threatened."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

Daniel looked angry.

"Mom."

"No."

She stepped forward.

"She needs the whole truth."

Daniel looked at me.

"After Maria survived, she told me she had copies of the evidence."

"Evidence against who?"

Eleanor answered.

"Against Daniel's business partner."

My eyes widened.

"Who?"

Daniel looked down.

Then finally said the name.

"Victor Hale."

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel's reaction told me it was someone dangerous.

"He built the company with me," Daniel said.

"And he tried to destroy you?"

Daniel nodded.

"Not just me."

He looked at me.

"You."

My heart stopped.

"Why me?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because Victor knew you were the only person who could make me walk away from everything."

I didn't understand.

"You are talking like this was some kind of war."

Daniel looked at me.

"It was."

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

"I thought if I kept you away from it, you would be safe."

I shook my head.

"You lied to me."

"I know."

"You let me believe you were cheating."

Daniel looked away.

That reaction hurt.

Because I knew.

The affair.

The secretary.

The car.

All of it.

There was still a secret there.

"You still didn't explain Emily."

Daniel became quiet.

Too quiet.

I noticed.

"So there was more."

"Claire..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Don't."

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily wasn't what you think."

"Then what was she?"

Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

The screen showed a name.

Victor.

Daniel immediately rejected the call.

A second later, the phone rang again.

This time, Daniel didn't answer.

Then a message appeared.

His face turned pale.

"What is it?" I asked.

He didn't respond.

I walked closer.

"Daniel."

Slowly, he handed me the phone.

The message was short.

One sentence.

You failed to keep her away. Now she knows everything.

My hands went cold.

Because underneath the message was a photo.

A photo taken only minutes earlier.

Of me.

Inside this room.

Standing beside Daniel.

Someone had been watching us.

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

"We have to leave."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked toward the window.

Then toward the locked bedroom door.

"Because Victor doesn't threaten people twice."

A loud sound interrupted him.

The lights went out.

The entire house became dark.

Eleanor gasped.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

Then all three of us heard it.

A slow sound.

From downstairs.

Someone entering the house.

Daniel whispered:

"He found us."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice called from the bottom of the stairs.

"Claire."

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been lying to me for years.

May you like

The person stepped into the hallway light.

And Daniel whispered the name I never expected to hear.
