Chapter 6 - The Traitor in the Room

"Drop it," Evelyn said.

Voss did not.

Nathan stared at the pistol aimed at his chest.

Hale slowly moved sideways.

Voss noticed.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Evelyn's voice stayed calm.

"Miriam."

"Don't use my first name."

"You've known me five years."

"No. I've managed you for five years."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"So Laura was right."

Voss smiled sadly.

"Laura was right about many things."

Evelyn studied her.

"You were Orion."

"No."

"Then what?"

"Something better."

Voss gestured toward Evelyn's tattoo.

"Orion failed because Kane wanted control. Aegis failed because Laura wanted conscience."

"What did you want?"

"Continuity."

Nathan almost laughed.

"That's what tyrants call control when they're wearing a suit."

Voss ignored him.

"Governments change. Presidents change. Generals retire. Public opinion swings. Institutions cannot survive if every generation tears apart the decisions of the last."

"So you decide which decisions survive?"

"Someone has to."

Evelyn looked toward the pistol.

"You fabricated the evidence against me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To force your father into public action."

Nathan frowned.

"You sent the photograph."

"Yes."

"You threatened her."

"I gave you a choice."

"You threatened my daughter."

Voss's eyes hardened.

"And you performed beautifully."

Nathan moved.

The gun shifted toward him.

Evelyn stepped between them.

"Don't."

Voss looked at her.

"You still protect him."

"I'm protecting the truth."

"From him?"

"From anyone who thinks fear gives them authority."

Something flickered in Voss's expression.

Perhaps disappointment.

"Laura said things like that."

"Good."

"She was naïve too."

The secure tablet buzzed.

New message.

Evelyn glanced down.

One line.

STALL HER.

Sender: L-001.

Her mother.

Alive.

Evelyn looked back at Voss.

"Why reveal my mark?"

"I didn't."

"You forced the hearing."

"Yes."

"You knew my father would tear the insignia."

"No."

For the first time, Voss sounded genuinely amused.

"That was pure Nathan."

Nathan looked away.

Evelyn almost smiled despite everything.

Almost.

Voss continued.

"But once Hale recognized you, the room became useful."

"Useful how?"

"A public verification."

Hale understood first.

"You needed witnesses."

"Exactly."

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

"For what?"

Voss looked at her.

"Your activation."

"I was already active."

"Operationally. Not constitutionally."

Nathan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Voss stepped closer.

"Aegis Commander 071 possesses emergency authority only after recognition by three senior command witnesses."

Hale whispered, "The ceremony."

"Not a ceremony," Voss said. "A trigger."

Evelyn remembered the faces.

Hale standing.

Voss saluting.

Nathan witnessing.

Three.

"You activated me."

"Your father did."

Nathan looked sick.

"When I tore her insignia."

"When you exposed the mark."

Evelyn finally understood.

The humiliation had not merely revealed her hidden identity.

It had completed an old protocol.

"What authority did I receive?"

Voss smiled.

"Enough to dismantle everything we've built."

"And that's why you want me dead."

"No."

Voss shook her head.

"I want you convinced."

"Of what?"

"That dismantling us would be a mistake."

Hale scoffed.

"At gunpoint?"

"History rarely turns politely."

The tablet buzzed again.

MOVE LEFT.

Evelyn did not look down this time.

She shifted one step.

Voss tracked her.

Nathan noticed.

So did Hale.

Evelyn said, "Where is Kane?"

"With Laura."

"Why?"

"Because for twenty years, they have been trying to expose us."

Nathan stared.

"Kane and Laura were working together?"

"Eventually."

"And you killed her?"

"I tried."

Nathan lunged.

The gun fired.

The shot struck the wall.

Evelyn drove into Voss.

They crashed against the console.

Voss fought harder than her age suggested.

The pistol fell.

Hale kicked it away.

Nathan grabbed Voss's arm.

Evelyn pinned her against the floor.

"Done."

Voss laughed breathlessly.

"You think so?"

An alarm sounded.

Not building security.

Evacuation.

Evelyn's tablet flashed.

FIRE SUPPRESSION RELEASE: SUBLEVEL C.

Hale looked upward.

"Gas?"

Voss smiled.

"Not fire suppression."

Evelyn pulled her up.

"Move."

They ran.

Nathan dragged Voss.

Hale led toward the parking exit.

A white vapor poured from ceiling vents.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Thirty seconds.

Maybe less.

They reached the stairwell.

Locked.

Nathan slammed into the door.

Nothing.

Voss laughed again.

"You activated her, Nathan. You gave your daughter power above generals."

He turned toward her.

"And?"

"You also made her the only person who can authorize Aegis termination."

Evelyn looked at Voss.

"You want my code."

"I wanted your loyalty."

"You picked the wrong family."

Nathan glanced at Evelyn.

For the first time in years, something passed between them without resentment.

Agreement.

Hale found an emergency release box.

Locked.

Evelyn smashed the cover with the butt of Voss's pistol.

Pulled the lever.

The stairwell door opened.

They stumbled upward.

The vapor followed.

At the parking level, cold air hit them.

Evelyn inhaled deeply.

Then froze.

A black sedan waited twenty yards away.

Rear door open.

A gray-haired woman stood beside it.

Laura Cole.

Alive.

Older.

Tears already running down her face.

Evelyn could not move.

Neither could Nathan.

Laura looked at him first.

"Nate."

Nathan made a sound Evelyn had never heard from him.

Not a word.

Something broken.

Laura turned toward Evelyn.

"My baby."

Evelyn crossed the distance before she knew she was moving.

Laura held her.

For one moment, the Pentagon disappeared.

The conspiracy disappeared.

The uniform disappeared.

Evelyn was fourteen again.

Then she remembered everything.

She pulled away.

"You let me bury you."

Laura's face crumpled.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I know."

"For twenty years."

"I know."

Nathan approached slowly.

"Why?"

Laura looked at him.

"Because Voss had already reached people inside your staff."

Nathan glanced back.

Voss stood restrained between Hale and the wall.

Laura continued.

"If I came back, Evelyn became leverage."

Nathan's eyes filled.

"So you left her with me."

"I trusted you."

"You shouldn't have."

Laura looked toward Evelyn's torn uniform.

"I think I was right."

Evelyn looked away.

A man stepped from behind the sedan.

Tall.

White hair.

Thin scar along his jaw.

Nathan recognized him immediately.

"Silas."

Kane nodded.

"Nathan."

Nathan moved toward him.

Evelyn blocked him.

"Not yet."

Nathan stared at her.

"He ruined our lives."

Kane spoke quietly.

"No. I helped build the machine that ruined them."

"Difference?"

"Twenty years trying to destroy it."

Laura stepped between them.

"He's telling the truth."

Nathan looked at her.

"You chose him?"

Laura's expression hardened.

"I chose the mission."

The words struck Nathan because they were his words.

Words he had once used against her.

Laura saw that.

"So did you."

Silence.

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Where is the proof?"

Kane opened the trunk.

Inside were archival drives.

Paper files.

Recording devices.

"Everything."

Voss laughed behind them.

"Not everything."

They turned.

Voss's smile had returned.

Evelyn looked at the drives.

Then at her.

"What did you do?"

"Ask your mother."

Laura's face changed.

Evelyn noticed.

"Mom?"

Laura did not answer.

"Ask her what Aegis Crown was really built to protect."

Evelyn stared.

Laura whispered, "Evie..."

"What?"

"It wasn't originally designed to stop Orion."

Nathan looked between them.

"Then what was it designed for?"

Laura closed her eyes.

Kane stepped backward.

Even he looked afraid of the answer.

Then Evelyn's tablet vibrated.

A priority transmission.

PRESIDENTIAL AUTHENTICATION.

She opened it.

One sentence appeared.

COMMANDER 071, DO NOT TRUST LEGACY ORIGINATOR L-001.

Evelyn slowly raised her eyes toward her mother.

Laura saw the message reflected in Evelyn's face.

May you like

And whispered:

"They found out."
