Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Lies

The door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

The man standing outside stepped into the house.

He did not look like someone who had come to threaten them.

He looked like someone who had come to finish a story.

He was older.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried the marks of a difficult life.

But Emmett recognized him.

Not because he had seen him before.

Because he had seen his name.

On documents.

On records.

In his father’s journal.

The man looked at Elias.

Then at Emmett.

“I’m sorry it took this long.”

Emmett’s hand moved toward his pistol.

“Who are you?”

The man took a slow breath.

“My name is Henry Kesler.”

Odessa froze.

Her face changed instantly.

“Father?”

The room went silent.

Emmett looked at her.

Then back at the man.

“No.”

Odessa stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

Henry looked at his daughter.

“I know.”

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“You’re dead.”

“I needed everyone to believe that.”

Emmett felt the same anger rising again.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another lie.

“How many people in this room have been pretending to be dead?”

Nobody answered.

Henry looked at Emmett.

“Your father didn’t betray you.”

Emmett laughed softly.

“That’s what everyone says after they lie to me.”

Henry accepted the anger.

He deserved it.

“I know what happened to you.”

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“I know you spent three years believing your own name was worthless.”

The words stopped Emmett.

Because they were true.

Henry continued.

“I know you lost your badge.”

“I know people turned against you.”

“I know you left town because staying meant hearing the same accusations every day.”

Emmett stared at him.

“How?”

Henry looked at Elias.

“Because I was there.”

The room became heavy.

Emmett turned to his father.

“You knew he was alive?”

Elias nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I couldn’t.”

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Emmett shook his head.

“You all keep saying that.”

His voice lowered.

“But nobody ever says why.”

Henry walked toward the table.

“Because the person behind everything was watching.”

“Who?”

Henry looked at Odessa.

His daughter looked away.

Again.

That small movement told Emmett everything.

She knew.

“You knew.”

Odessa looked at him.

“I knew pieces.”

“Pieces?”

“Yes.”

“And you still brought me here?”

Her eyes softened.

“I brought you here because this was the only place they couldn’t control.”

Emmett looked around.

The ranch.

The hidden rooms.

The secrets.

The lies.

“This place has done nothing but hide things from me.”

Odessa stepped closer.

“Because the truth was dangerous.”

“For who?”

Her answer was quiet.

“For you.”

Emmett wanted to believe her.

That was the problem.

Every time he wanted to trust someone, another secret appeared.

Henry placed a folder on the table.

“This is what they were looking for.”

Emmett looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Henry opened the folder.

Inside were pages of financial records.

Property transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Emmett scanned the documents.

Then stopped.

A familiar name appeared again.

Daniel Reed.

His stomach tightened.

“Daniel was involved from the beginning.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

Emmett looked at him.

“Say it.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I was supposed to deliver information.”

“To who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Henry answered.

“To the person who hired Caleb Voss.”

Emmett looked at Henry.

“Who?”

Henry’s expression darkened.

“The person who wanted Kesler Ranch.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Henry looked at him.

“Because the name matters.”

Emmett waited.

Henry continued.

“Her name is Margaret Voss.”

The room went quiet.

“Caleb’s wife?”

Henry nodded.

Emmett frowned.

“But Caleb was the one running everything.”

“No.”

Henry shook his head.

“Caleb was the face people saw.”

A cold feeling moved through Emmett.

“Then Margaret was behind it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Henry looked at Odessa.

“Because this ranch belonged to her family before it belonged to mine.”

Odessa stepped forward.

“What?”

Henry sighed.

“Your mother never told you.”

“My mother?”

Henry nodded.

“She was a Voss.”

Odessa froze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Emmett looked between them.

The secrets kept getting deeper.

“Wait.”

He pointed at the documents.

“You’re telling me the woman trying to destroy this ranch is Odessa’s own family?”

Henry nodded.

“And that is why she couldn’t trust anyone.”

Odessa looked away.

Emmett noticed something.

Pain.

Not fear.

Pain.

“What happened to your mother?”

Odessa didn’t answer.

Henry did.

“She tried to stop Margaret.”

“And?”

Henry’s face became serious.

“She disappeared.”

The room went silent.

Emmett looked at Odessa.

“You knew.”

She finally nodded.

“I found out years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every person who knew the truth ended up hurt.”

The answer was honest.

That made it worse.

Then a sound came from outside.

A horse.

Someone approaching.

Everyone stopped.

Daniel moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“What?”

Emmett asked.

Daniel whispered.

“She found us.”

Henry immediately grabbed the folder.

“We need to leave.”

Odessa looked confused.

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

Henry’s voice was urgent.

“Because she knows about the documents.”

Emmett looked outside.

A black carriage stopped near the house.

A woman stepped out.

Elegant.

Calm.

Not rushing.

Not afraid.

She looked toward the house like she owned it.

Daniel whispered her name.

“Margaret.”

Emmett watched her approach.

She didn’t hide.

She didn’t need to.

She walked to the front door and knocked once.

Everyone inside remained silent.

Then she spoke.

“Emmett Doyle.”

His body went still.

Because she knew his name.

Not his reputation.

Not the rumors.

His name.

“I know you’re in there.”

Odessa moved closer to him.

“Don’t answer.”

Margaret knocked again.

Then she said something that made Elias’ face lose all color.

“I know the truth about what your father did the night he disappeared.”

Emmett looked at Elias.

His father looked away.

For the first time…

Emmett wondered if there was a secret even his father had been hiding.

Margaret placed her hand on the door handle.

May you like

And whispered:

“Open the door, Emmett. Your father never told you who really died that night.”
