Chapter 6 - The Friend Who Sold Him Out

“Emmett.”
The voice came from the doorway.
A voice he had heard hundreds of times.
A voice he once trusted more than anyone.
Emmett slowly turned.
Daniel Reed stood there.
Older than he remembered.
His face thinner.
His eyes different.
But it was him.
The same man who sat beside Emmett during the trial.
The same man who promised he would find the truth.
The same man who told him:
“Somebody did this to you. I won’t stop until I prove it.”
Emmett stared at him.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Emmett looked down at the letter in his hand.
The final sentence was still there.
The real person has been beside you all along.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“Daniel.”
Daniel swallowed.
“I can explain.”
Emmett almost laughed.
Those words.
Everyone who betrayed him always started with those words.
“I can explain.”
Caleb said nothing.
His father stayed silent.
Odessa looked between them.
And Emmett realized something.
Everyone in the room knew more than he did.
Again.
“You knew.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emmett…”
“You knew everything.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
His voice was calm.
That made it worse.
Anger would have been easier.
But after fifteen years of being lied to, he had learned something.
The quiet moments were the dangerous ones.
Daniel stepped inside.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”
“Then how did you want me to find out?”
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Emmett nodded slowly.
“Of course you don’t.”
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at Elias.
“You came back.”
Elias’ expression hardened.
“You knew I was alive.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Emmett looked between them.
“How long?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Since the beginning.”
The words landed like a punch.
“Since the beginning of what?”
“The investigation.”
Emmett stepped closer.
“You knew my father wasn’t dead?”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was innocent?”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
“You watched me lose everything.”
Daniel’s face showed regret.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Emmett laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Everybody says that.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because it was true.”
“No.”
Emmett shook his head.
“No, it wasn’t.”
He pointed toward the door.
“Protection is standing beside someone.”
His voice hardened.
“Not standing there while they destroy him.”
Daniel had no answer.
Because there was no answer.
The truth was sitting in front of them.
Fifteen years of silence.
Fifteen years of Emmett believing he was alone.
And the people who knew the truth had let him suffer.
“Why?”
The question was quieter.
More painful.
“Why would you do that?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because I was scared.”
Emmett stared.
“Scared of what?”
Daniel took a breath.
“Of them.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Caleb’s photograph on the table.
“People who had enough power to erase anyone.”
Emmett’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re telling me you were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“And that was worth ruining my life?”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“It wasn’t.”
A long silence followed.
Then Elias spoke.
“Daniel wasn’t the one who made the decision.”
Emmett turned.
“What?”
Elias looked toward him.
“He helped them.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But he didn’t create the plan.”
Emmett looked confused.
“Who did?”
Nobody answered.
And that terrified him.
Because the answer was close.
Too close.
Daniel walked toward the table.
“I came here because I found something.”
Emmett didn’t move.
“What?”
Daniel pulled a small envelope from his coat.
“This.”
He placed it down.
Emmett stared at it.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
He almost didn’t want to open it.
Almost.
But curiosity had ruined more lives than anger.
He picked it up.
Inside was a document.
A payment record.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
A name appeared.
Not Caleb.
Not Daniel.
Not anyone he expected.
The money had come from an account belonging to—
Odessa Kesler.
Emmett looked up.
The room changed.
Odessa immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
“You paid him?”
Her face went pale.
“Emmett, listen.”
“You paid Daniel to help destroy my life?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
He stepped back.
“How much more don’t I know?”
Odessa looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“I never paid Daniel to hurt you.”
“Then why is your name on this?”
She had no answer.
Daniel spoke.
“Because it wasn’t her.”
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel shook his head.
“Someone used her account.”
Emmett frowned.
“What?”
Daniel pulled out another document.
“Someone had access to the Kesler Ranch finances.”
Odessa froze.
“My father.”
Daniel nodded.
“Your father wasn’t just protecting the ranch.”
He looked at Emmett.
“He was hiding who was controlling it.”
Elias walked closer.
“That’s what I discovered.”
Emmett looked at him.
“And that’s why you disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“You found the person behind everything?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Elias hesitated.
Then he looked toward the window.
A strange expression crossed his face.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not for himself.
For Emmett.
“I found out too late.”
“Found out what?”
Elias looked at his son.
“The person controlling everything wasn’t trying to steal the ranch.”
“Then what were they trying to do?”
Elias answered quietly.
“They were trying to erase your family.”
The words settled heavily.
Emmett looked at the photograph.
His father.
Caleb.
Daniel.
All connected.
All part of something bigger.
Then he noticed something.
The document in his hand.
The payment record.
There was a date.
A date that made him freeze.
The payment happened after his trial.
After Daniel promised to help him.
After Emmett lost his badge.
Someone had continued paying Daniel even after everything was over.
Someone had wanted him silent.
Emmett looked at Daniel.
“You were still working for them.”
Daniel didn’t deny it.
A terrible silence followed.
“How long?”
Daniel whispered.
“Three years.”
Emmett felt the betrayal all over again.
“You watched me disappear.”
“Yes.”
“Why come now?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Because they know I’m here.”
Before anyone could ask who he meant, the lights went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Odessa immediately reached for her weapon.
Elias moved toward Emmett.
“Stay back.”
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone walking around the house.
Then the front door handle began to turn.
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered one word.
“No.”
Emmett looked at him.
“Who is it?”
Daniel’s face lost all color.
Because he recognized the footsteps.
The door opened halfway.
May you like
And a familiar voice said:
“I think it’s time we stopped hiding the truth from Emmett.”
