Chapter 6 - The Message on His Phone

Tess called Kieran immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
The old panic returned.
The old pattern.
But Tess stopped herself.
One unanswered call did not equal betrayal.
Not anymore.
She called Rebecca.
"Have you spoken to Kieran?"
"Twenty minutes ago."
"Where is he?"
"Meeting with Martin."
Tess stared at the photograph.
"About what?"
"I don't know."
"Did he sign anything?"
Silence.
"Tess, why?"
She forwarded the image.
Rebecca called back almost immediately.
"Where did you get this?"
"Unknown number."
"Don't respond."
"Why?"
"Because somebody wants you suspicious."
"They're succeeding."
Lena took the phone.
"Rebecca, meet us at my office."
They left Danny with Tess's neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, and drove downtown.
Kieran was already there when they arrived.
So was Martin.
Tess walked straight toward her husband.
"What did you sign?"
Kieran looked confused.
"What?"
She showed him the photograph.
Martin cursed quietly.
Tess turned.
"Interesting reaction."
Martin looked at Kieran.
"Tell her."
Kieran pulled a document from his briefcase.
"I signed away my voting control."
Tess stared.
"To whom?"
"Rebecca."
Rebecca stopped walking.
"You did what?"
Kieran faced his sister.
"If the lender succeeds in arguing you're not a legitimate owner, they'll attack the whole structure. If I voluntarily recognize your original ownership and transfer temporary voting authority—"
"You gave me control?"
"Yes."
"Without asking me?"
Kieran winced.
"Technically—"
Rebecca laughed in disbelief.
"You learned nothing."
"I was trying to—"
"Protect everyone?"
Kieran stopped.
Rebecca folded her arms.
"How's that strategy working?"
Even Tess nearly smiled.
Kieran sighed.
"Badly."
"Call them," Rebecca said.
"Who?"
"Everyone."
"Why?"
"Because I'm not accepting control without conditions."
Within an hour, Lena's conference room filled with attorneys and accountants.
Tess watched Kieran do something she had rarely seen.
Listen.
Rebecca proposed selling the troubled development.
Kieran hated it.
It had been their father's last major project.
He argued.
Rebecca countered.
They fought.
Not cruelly.
Honestly.
Finally Rebecca said, "You're trying to save Dad."
Kieran stopped.
"He is dead."
Silence.
"The building isn't him. The company isn't him. You don't have to destroy your family proving you were worthy of inheriting his."
Tess watched Kieran's face.
Something broke.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
He sat down.
"Sell it."
Two words.
Years of pressure seemed to leave his shoulders.
That night, Tess drove him home.
Not their home.
His temporary apartment.
Before getting out, Kieran said, "Can I ask you something?"
"Yes."
"Is there any chance for us?"
Tess looked ahead.
"I don't know."
"Okay."
"That's not punishment."
"I know."
"I genuinely don't know."
"I understand."
She turned toward him.
"Do you know what I need?"
"Tell me."
"I need you to become reliable even if I never take you back."
He absorbed that.
"For Danny."
"For yourself."
Kieran nodded.
"I can do that."
"Don't promise."
He almost smiled.
"Right."
"Do it."
He got out.
Weeks passed.
The troubled project sold.
The company survived smaller.
Kieran lost money.
A lot of it.
He also started arriving at Danny's school before pickup time.
Every Tuesday.
No dramatic gestures.
No expensive gifts.
Just presence.
Tess noticed.
She tried not to.
At thirty-three weeks pregnant, she attended Danny's school presentation.
Kieran arrived fifteen minutes early.
He sat three seats away from Tess.
Danny saw them both.
His entire face lit up.
That mattered.
Afterward, Danny ran toward them.
"You both came."
Tess smiled.
"We said we would."
Danny hugged them simultaneously.
For one strange moment, Tess felt Kieran's hand against her shoulder.
Neither moved.
Then Danny pulled away.
"Pizza?"
Kieran looked at Tess.
"Your call."
Another small change.
Tess nodded.
"Pizza."
They went to the neighborhood place Danny loved.
No chandeliers.
No wineglasses.
No Lena.
Just sticky menus and paper napkins.
Halfway through dinner, Danny asked, "Are we a family?"
Tess and Kieran exchanged a look.
Kieran answered first.
"Always."
"Even if you don't live home?"
"Yes."
Danny looked at Tess.
"Is he ever coming back?"
Tess could feel Kieran waiting.
Not influencing.
Not pleading.
"I don't know yet."
Danny nodded.
"Okay."
Then he returned to his pizza.
Later, outside, Kieran walked them to Tess's car.
"Thank you."
"You don't have to thank me for dinner."
"I wasn't."
She understood.
He left.
Tess drove home.
At 10:17, her phone rang.
It was Martin.
She almost didn't answer.
"Tess."
His voice sounded strange.
"What happened?"
"I need you to come to the office."
"Now?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I know who sent you that photograph."
Tess sat upright.
"Who?"
Martin hesitated.
"And I know who created the false agreement with Rebecca's signature."
Tess's pulse accelerated.
"Tell me."
"Not over the phone."
"Martin—"
A noise interrupted him.
A door opening.
Martin suddenly stopped speaking.
"Martin?"
Silence.
Then she heard him say a name.
May you like
"Lena?"
The call disconnected.
