Chapter 2 - The Question in the Parking Lot

Tess instinctively moved Danny behind her.

The restaurant door opened.

A gray-haired man in a dark suit stepped onto the sidewalk.

Tess recognized him after a moment.

Martin Vale.

Kieran's attorney.

Martin looked from Lena to Tess, then to the folder.

His expression hardened.

"Lena."

She gripped it tighter.

"You shouldn't be out here," Martin said.

"Neither should you."

"What is going on?" Tess asked.

Martin ignored the question.

"Lena, give me the folder."

"No."

Danny pressed against Tess's side.

Tess felt anger replace exhaustion.

"My son is standing here."

Martin finally looked at Danny.

His expression softened slightly.

"You're right."

He stepped backward.

"This isn't the place."

"Apparently everyone keeps saying that," Tess replied. "Yet everyone except me seems to know what the place is."

Lena looked at Tess.

"I wasn't having an affair with your husband."

The sentence landed strangely.

Too direct.

Too immediate.

Tess studied her.

"I didn't ask."

"You were thinking it."

"Wouldn't you?"

Lena nodded.

"Yes."

Martin exhaled.

"Lena, stop."

"No."

She faced Tess.

"Kieran hired my firm six months ago."

"For what?"

Lena looked at Danny.

"We shouldn't discuss it in front of him."

Tess almost snapped back.

Then she realized Lena was right.

Whatever this was, Danny had already absorbed too much.

Tess opened the rear door of her car.

"Buddy, get inside for a minute."

Danny resisted.

"Mom—"

"I'm right here."

"Are you leaving?"

"No."

"Promise?"

Tess's heart twisted.

"Promise."

Danny climbed inside.

She closed the door but left the window partially open.

Then she turned.

"Talk."

Lena opened the folder.

Inside were contracts.

Financial statements.

Property records.

Tess recognized Kieran's company name.

MORELAND DEVELOPMENT GROUP.

She recognized their home address.

Then she saw her own name.

"What is this?"

Martin stepped closer.

"It's estate planning."

Tess looked at him.

"Estate planning?"

"Kieran has been restructuring company assets."

"Why?"

Martin and Lena exchanged a glance.

That glance frightened Tess more than the papers.

"Why?"

Lena answered.

"Because the company is in trouble."

Tess stared.

Kieran's company wasn't in trouble.

At least not according to Kieran.

He had recently talked about expansion.

New contracts.

A second office.

He had even suggested replacing Tess's car.

"How much trouble?"

Lena pulled out a page.

"Potentially serious."

"What does potentially mean?"

"It means a development project went bad. There are lawsuits. Investors are threatening action. Kieran has been trying to protect personal assets from becoming entangled."

Tess stared at her name again.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"I asked him the same thing."

"And?"

"He said you were pregnant."

Tess laughed once.

It sounded bitter even to her.

"Apparently pregnancy has made me incapable of reading."

"No."

Lena's expression softened.

"He thought stress might hurt you or the baby."

"So he lied."

"He withheld things."

"That's a polite word for lying."

Martin intervened.

"Kieran believed he was protecting his family."

Tess looked at him.

"By missing his son and secretly meeting another woman?"

"This meeting wasn't secret."

"Did I know about it?"

Martin had no answer.

Lena handed Tess another page.

"Kieran was supposed to sign these tonight."

"What do they do?"

"They move control of several personal assets into a protected family structure."

Tess scanned the page.

Then froze.

Her name appeared again.

TESSA MORELAND — BENEFICIARY.

Below it:

DANIEL MORELAND — BENEFICIARY.

"Kieran isn't listed."

"He didn't want to be," Lena said.

Tess looked up.

"Why?"

"Because if the worst happens with the company, he wants the house and certain savings protected for you and Danny."

That changed something.

Not enough.

But something.

The dinner suddenly looked different.

Still wrong.

Still secretive.

Still an abandonment of Danny.

But perhaps not what Tess had thought.

"Why wine?"

Lena almost smiled.

"Because I'd been here for three hours."

Tess looked down.

"And Kieran?"

"Half a glass. He arrived forty minutes ago."

Forty minutes.

Danny had waited longer than that.

Tess's anger returned.

"So he had time to come here."

"Yes."

"And not time to call his son."

Lena didn't defend him.

"No."

That honesty surprised Tess.

Martin looked at his watch.

"We need to go back inside."

Lena ignored him.

"There is something else."

Martin's voice sharpened.

"Lena."

"What?"

Tess demanded.

Lena reached into the folder.

Martin caught her wrist.

Not violently, but firmly.

"Enough."

Tess stepped forward.

"Take your hand off her."

Martin released Lena immediately.

Danny's voice came through the cracked car window.

"Mom?"

"I'm okay."

Lena pulled out a sealed envelope.

It had Tess's name handwritten across the front.

Kieran's handwriting.

"When did he write that?"

"Tonight."

"What's inside?"

"I don't know."

Martin did.

Tess could see it.

"Martin?"

The attorney looked away.

Tess reached for the envelope.

Before Lena could hand it over, the restaurant doors opened again.

This time Kieran appeared.

His gaze went immediately to the envelope.

"Lena."

Nobody moved.

Kieran crossed the sidewalk.

"What are you doing?"

"Something you should have done months ago," Lena said.

Kieran looked at Tess.

Then at Danny watching from inside the car.

His shoulders fell.

"Tess."

She held out her hand.

"Give it to me."

Lena placed the envelope in her palm.

Kieran didn't stop her.

Tess turned it over.

The flap had been sealed.

"Kieran, what's in this?"

He looked exhausted now.

Older.

"Something I hoped you'd never need."

"That's not an answer."

"I know."

"Then give me one."

Kieran stared at the envelope.

"You should read it at home."

"No."

"Tess."

"No more telling me when I'm allowed to know things."

She tore open the envelope.

Kieran stepped forward.

"Tess, wait."

Too late.

She unfolded the first page.

The opening sentence was written by hand.

If you're reading this, I've failed to keep the consequences of my choices away from you.

Tess stopped breathing.

She looked at Kieran.

"What consequences?"

He said nothing.

Then Danny knocked against the car window.

Once.

Twice.

Tess turned.

Danny was no longer looking at her.

He was looking at Kieran.

And holding Kieran's phone.

Somehow it had been left inside Tess's car.

The screen was glowing.

A message had just appeared.

Danny read the name aloud.

"Mom... who's Rebecca?"

Kieran's face changed.

Tess slowly walked toward the car.

Danny turned the screen toward her.

May you like

The message contained only six words.

WE NEED TO TELL TESS TONIGHT.
