Chapter 3 - What Kieran Didn't Tell Me

Kieran reached the car before Tess did.

"Give me the phone."

Danny pulled it toward his chest.

"No."

"Danny."

"Don't."

That stopped Kieran.

Tess opened the door.

"Give it to me, sweetheart."

Danny handed her the phone.

The message remained visible.

Rebecca.

We need to tell Tess tonight.

Tess looked at Kieran.

"Who is she?"

"My sister."

Tess blinked.

"Kieran, you don't have a sister."

"That's what I need to explain."

Martin quietly stepped away.

Lena looked miserable.

Tess stared at her husband.

Nine years married.

Eleven years together.

She knew his childhood stories.

His parents had died years apart.

He had described himself as an only child.

"Start talking."

Kieran looked at Danny.

"Not here."

Tess almost refused.

Then she saw her son's face.

"Fine."

She turned to Lena.

"Take Danny inside for five minutes."

Danny protested immediately.

"No."

Tess crouched beside him.

"I need to talk to Dad."

"Are you mad?"

"Yes."

"Are you leaving him?"

The question cut through everyone.

Tess took Danny's hands.

"I don't know what's going to happen. But you and I are going home together."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

Lena led him toward the restaurant lobby.

Tess waited until the door closed.

Then she faced Kieran.

"Sister."

Kieran rubbed both hands over his face.

"Half-sister."

"Name?"

"Rebecca Hale."

"Age?"

"Thirty-four."

"How long have you known?"

"Since I was nineteen."

Tess stared.

"You've known for almost twenty years."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"No."

"Why?"

Kieran looked toward the street.

"My father had another family before my mother."

Tess waited.

"Rebecca's mother wanted nothing to do with him after they separated. My father paid support, but Rebecca grew up using her mother's name."

"And?"

"When Dad died, Rebecca contacted me."

"For money?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because she wanted to know me."

That somehow made the lie worse.

"So you've had a sister for our entire marriage."

"Yes."

"Does Danny know?"

"No."

"Have you seen her?"

Kieran hesitated.

Tess felt her stomach tighten.

"How often?"

"A few times a year."

"Where?"

"Usually Boston."

"You told me those were business trips."

"They were. I scheduled seeing her around them."

Tess stepped backward.

One lie had opened another.

Then another.

"You made me part of your lies."

"I never wanted—"

"Every time someone asked about your family, I repeated what you told me. Every time Danny asked whether he had cousins or an aunt—"

"Rebecca doesn't have children."

"That's not the point."

"I know."

"No, Kieran. You don't."

Her voice remained low.

That frightened him more than yelling would have.

"You decide what everyone gets to know. You decide what I can handle. You decide what Danny can understand. Then you call it protection."

Kieran said nothing.

Tess held up the letter.

"What else?"

He looked at it.

"The company."

"I know."

"Not all of it."

"Of course not."

Kieran flinched.

He explained.

A development partnership had collapsed after one investor allegedly misrepresented financing.

Projects stalled.

Credit lines tightened.

Lawsuits followed.

Kieran had personally guaranteed portions of the debt.

For six months, he had been moving desperately between lawyers, accountants, lenders, and investors.

Lena's firm specialized in restructuring.

The restaurant meeting had been about protecting Tess and Danny if the company failed.

"Why tonight?"

"Because tomorrow morning one lender can begin proceedings."

"And you still promised Danny."

Kieran closed his eyes.

"I thought I'd finish before five."

"You thought."

"Yes."

"You could have called."

"I know."

"You could have sent one text."

"I know."

"You didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Kieran finally looked at her.

"Because I was ashamed."

That answer was different.

Tess said nothing.

"I kept thinking I'd fix everything before you ever needed to know."

"Everything?"

"The company. Rebecca. All of it."

"Rebecca isn't a problem to fix."

"I know."

"Then why hide her?"

Kieran looked toward the restaurant.

"When I was nineteen, my mother found out I'd met Rebecca. She completely broke down. Dad had been dead less than a year. She made me promise never to bring that part of his life into hers."

"Your mother has been dead six years."

"I know."

"So why continue?"

"Because secrets become habits."

There it was.

The first sentence all evening that sounded completely true.

Tess looked through the glass.

Danny sat with Lena.

He was drawing something on a napkin.

He looked tiny.

"I've been lying to him for you."

Kieran's eyes lowered.

"I know."

"No. Listen to me. Every time you didn't show up, I gave him a reason. Every time you broke a promise, I softened it. I taught our son to doubt his own disappointment because I wanted him to keep believing his father was dependable."

Kieran's eyes filled.

"Tess—"

"Don't."

She pressed a hand against her stomach.

The baby moved.

Kieran noticed.

"Are you okay?"

"Physically? Yes."

"Should we go to the hospital?"

"I'm an ICU nurse, Kieran. I know when I need medical help."

"I wasn't—"

"I know."

Silence.

Finally Tess said, "I'm going home."

"Can I come?"

"No."

His face tightened.

"For tonight."

"Where am I supposed to go?"

She stared at him.

For years she had worried about his comfort.

Not tonight.

"You're an adult."

Kieran nodded slowly.

"Can I say goodnight to Danny?"

Tess considered it.

"Yes."

They went inside.

Danny stood when he saw them.

"Are we going?"

"Yeah," Tess said.

Kieran crouched beside him.

"I'm sorry."

Danny looked away.

"I know sorry doesn't fix tonight."

Danny's eyes returned to him.

"Then why say it?"

Kieran swallowed.

"Because it's true."

Danny considered that.

"Are you coming home?"

Kieran looked at Tess.

"Not tonight."

Danny's face fell.

"Because of her?"

He glanced at Lena.

"No."

"Because of Mom?"

"No."

"Then because of you?"

Kieran stared at him.

"Yes."

Danny nodded.

Strangely, that answer seemed to make sense to him.

He hugged Kieran.

Only briefly.

Then he returned to Tess.

They left.

The drive home was quiet.

Halfway there Danny asked, "Is Rebecca Dad's girlfriend?"

"No."

"Who is she?"

Tess tightened her grip on the wheel.

"Your dad needs to explain that."

Danny sighed.

"Adults make everything complicated."

Despite herself, Tess smiled.

"Sometimes."

At home, Danny showered and climbed into bed.

Tess sat beside him.

"Mom?"

"Yeah?"

"Did I make Dad leave?"

"No."

"Because I asked those questions?"

"No."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Danny studied her.

"Then I'm glad I asked."

Tess kissed his forehead.

"So am I."

After he fell asleep, she went downstairs.

The house felt enormous.

She opened Kieran's letter.

It contained apologies.

Financial details.

Instructions if the company collapsed.

Account numbers.

Insurance information.

And one sentence that made Tess cry for the first time.

I became so obsessed with saving the roof over your heads that I stopped being the man you wanted beneath it.

She covered her mouth.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Tess almost ignored it.

Then another message arrived.

My name is Rebecca Hale.

A photograph followed.

Kieran stood beside a woman Tess had never seen.

The date in the corner was only three weeks old.

Rebecca sent another message.

Kieran hasn't told you the most important part.

Tess stared at the screen.

Then the doorbell rang.

It was 11:43 p.m.

She checked the camera.

A woman stood outside.

The same woman from the photograph.

May you like

Rebecca had come to her house.

And she wasn't alone.
