Chapter 5 - The Friend at the Door

Claire Donovan had been Elena's closest friend for twelve years.
She was also inside the Vermont house.
When Adrian arrived, an ambulance was already outside.
He ran toward the porch.
A paramedic stopped him.
“Sir—”
“My wife.”
“She’s stable.”
Adrian nearly collapsed.
“The baby?”
“We can't confirm anything here.”
Claire appeared behind them.
“Adrian.”
He looked at her.
The woman who had attended his wedding.
The woman Elena trusted.
The woman Luca had just named.
“Where is Elena?”
“In the ambulance.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Why are you here?”
Claire blinked.
“She called me.”
“Before the ambulance?”
“Yes.”
“You were two hours away.”
Claire went still.
Adrian saw it.
The lie.
Marco appeared behind him.
“Claire.”
She backed toward the door.
“What is this?”
“Give me your phone.”
“No.”
Adrian did not threaten her.
He simply looked exhausted.
“Please.”
Claire's expression broke.
That frightened him more than resistance.
She handed it over.
Marco checked recent messages.
Then looked at Adrian.
“She's been communicating with Gabriel.”
Elena heard from inside the ambulance.
“Claire?”
Claire began crying.
“Elena, I’m sorry.”
Elena stepped down despite the paramedic's protest.
“What did you do?”
“I never wanted anyone to hurt you.”
“What did you do?”
Claire covered her mouth.
Years earlier, her brother had accumulated debts with men connected to Gabriel.
Gabriel offered to erase them.
All Claire had to do was provide harmless information.
Elena's schedule.
Where she shopped.
When Adrian was home.
“It started before March,” Claire whispered.
Elena stared at her.
“The photographs.”
Claire nodded.
Adrian looked sick.
“You caused the threat that made me pull away from her.”
“I didn't know what he was planning.”
“You gave him our life.”
“I thought it was just information.”
Elena's voice cracked.
“You knew I was pregnant.”
Claire cried harder.
“Yes.”
“You told him?”
“He already suspected.”
“Did you tell him?”
“Yes.”
Elena turned away.
The betrayal hurt differently because Claire had been the one person she trusted while her marriage collapsed.
Every conversation.
Every tear.
Every secret.
Potentially delivered to Gabriel.
“Why are you here now?”
Claire looked toward the house.
“Because Gabriel escaped custody this morning.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“He contacted me.”
“What did he say?”
Claire reached into her pocket.
A folded note.
“He said Elena would lose something today.”
Adrian took it.
Three words.
THE BLOODLINE ENDS.
He looked toward Elena.
“Hospital. Now.”
The examination lasted hours.
Adrian sat outside because Elena had not asked him inside.
Finally, a doctor emerged.
“Mr. Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Your wife is stable.”
“And the baby?”
The doctor smiled gently.
“Heartbeat is strong.”
Adrian covered his face.
For several seconds, he could not speak.
When Elena was discharged later that evening, he waited beside the car.
“You don't have to come with me,” she said.
“I know.”
“Where will you go?”
“Hotel.”
“You drove four hours.”
“Yes.”
“It's snowing.”
“I noticed.”
Elena almost smiled.
Almost.
“You can take the couch.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Don't make me regret it.”
“I won't.”
That night, they sat in Elena's small kitchen.
No mansion.
No staff.
No security visible.
Just two people drinking tea.
Adrian looked around.
“You still haven't fixed the ceiling.”
“It leaks only when it rains.”
“That is generally when roofs matter.”
Elena laughed.
A real laugh.
Both of them stopped.
They had forgotten what it sounded like.
Adrian smiled.
Elena's eyes filled.
“I missed you.”
His smile disappeared.
“I missed you every day.”
“Then why didn't you come back?”
“Because you told me to leave you alone.”
“I meant before.”
“I know.”
She looked down at her tea.
“I don't know if I can forgive eight months.”
“I don't expect you to.”
“I don't know if I want the divorce.”
Adrian did not move.
“But I don't know if I want the marriage either.”
“Then don't decide tonight.”
She looked at him.
“What happened to the man who needed every answer immediately?”
“He lost his wife.”
“You haven't lost me.”
“Not completely.”
“No.”
That single word meant more than Adrian deserved.
He slept on the couch.
At 2:13 a.m., he woke to Elena screaming.
Adrian ran upstairs.
She stood beside the window.
“What?”
She pointed outside.
Someone had carved a symbol into the snow beneath the bedroom window.
A snake wrapped around a cross.
Gabriel.
Adrian looked toward the tree line.
A figure stood between the pines.
Watching.
Then Elena's phone rang.
She answered.
Gabriel's voice whispered:
“Ask your husband what really happened to his father.”
The line disconnected.
May you like
Elena turned toward Adrian.
His face told her the answer was something she had never heard before.
