Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Chose the Empire

Caterina Vale did not deny it.

When Adrian placed Gabriel's phone on the table, she looked at the messages and simply sat down.

Elena stood beside the fireplace.

Luca remained near the door.

Adrian faced his mother.

“How long?”

Caterina said nothing.

“How long have you been talking to him?”

“Two years.”

Luca stared at her.

“Two years?”

“I was preventing a war.”

Adrian laughed once.

“You gave him information about my wife.”

“I gave him nothing that endangered her.”

“He kidnapped her.”

“That was not our agreement.”

Elena's face hardened.

“Agreement?”

Caterina finally looked at her.

“I was trying to protect this family.”

Elena almost smiled.

“Of course.”

Adrian placed both hands on the table.

“Explain.”

Caterina did.

After Adrian's father died, hidden accounts had remained disputed between the Vale and Rinaldi families.

Gabriel wanted them.

Caterina wanted peace.

So she made a secret arrangement.

When Adrian eventually had a child, part of the trust would be transferred to Gabriel in exchange for permanently ending the feud.

“You negotiated with my unborn child?”

Caterina stiffened.

“I negotiated with assets.”

“No. You negotiated with my family.”

“I did what was necessary.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“That sentence has destroyed enough people.”

Elena looked at him.

He knew he was also speaking about himself.

Caterina turned to Elena.

“You don't understand our world.”

“I understand it perfectly.”

“No, you don't.”

“I understand that every cruel thing gets renamed protection.”

Silence.

Elena continued.

“Adrian ignored me to protect me. You betrayed us to protect the family. Gabriel kidnapped me to avenge his family. Everyone has a beautiful word for what they do.”

Caterina stood.

“You walked into this family willingly.”

“Yes.”

“And now you carry its heir.”

Elena's eyes sharpened.

“My baby is not your heir.”

The room became still.

“My child is a child.”

Caterina looked at Adrian.

“Control your wife.”

Adrian stared at his mother.

“No.”

One word.

Caterina seemed genuinely stunned.

Adrian walked to Elena.

“She isn't mine to control.”

Elena looked at him.

Something shifted.

Small.

But real.

Adrian turned toward Marco.

“Escort my mother to the guest residence.”

Caterina's face changed.

“You're removing me from my own home?”

“This is my home.”

“I built this family.”

“And you almost destroyed mine.”

“You would choose her over your blood?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

Then at his mother.

“She is my blood.”

Caterina was escorted out.

That night, Elena stayed only because her doctor insisted she rest after the kidnapping.

She chose a guest bedroom.

Adrian did not object.

At three in the morning, she found him sitting outside the door.

“You're guarding me?”

“No.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

“In case you need something.”

Elena looked at him.

“You have people for that.”

“I know.”

“Then go sleep.”

“I can't.”

She almost closed the door.

Then stopped.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you stop sleeping beside me?”

He looked down.

“I told you.”

“Security.”

“That was part of it.”

“What was the other part?”

He remained silent too long.

Elena waited.

Finally:

“I was afraid.”

She frowned.

“Of me?”

“Of losing you.”

“That makes no sense.”

“I know.”

He stood.

“After the shooting in March, they sent photographs.”

“What photographs?”

“You.”

Elena went still.

“Leaving the florist. Sitting in your car. Sleeping beside the pool.”

Her face drained.

“You never told me.”

“I thought if I changed my routine, they would believe you weren't important.”

Elena stared at him.

“So you made me believe I wasn't important instead.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

There was no defense.

No excuse.

Just yes.

Elena's anger softened into something more painful.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I should have.”

“We could have been afraid together.”

“I know.”

“But you decided for both of us.”

“Yes.”

She looked at the man she had loved for eight years.

For the first time, Adrian was not trying to win.

He was admitting he had lost.

“Goodnight, Adrian.”

“Goodnight.”

She closed the door.

The next morning, Adrian signed the divorce papers.

Elena stared at his signature.

“You signed?”

“You asked for freedom.”

“I thought you'd fight.”

“I am.”

She frowned.

“How?”

“By respecting what you asked for.”

He slid the documents toward her.

“If you leave, I won't follow you. If you want security, I'll provide it. If you don't, I won't force it. If you want me at doctor's appointments, I'll come. If you don't, I won't.”

Elena looked down.

“And us?”

Adrian's voice was quiet.

“I'll earn the right to ask about us later.”

For the first time in months, Elena cried in front of him.

Not because he had hurt her.

Because he finally understood.

She left for Vermont two days later.

Adrian stayed behind.

Weeks passed.

He dismantled businesses that had kept him tied to violence.

He turned over evidence against Gabriel.

He removed corrupt men from his organization.

He sold properties connected to old criminal operations.

People thought Adrian Vale was weakening.

He knew better.

He was becoming someone his child might someday be able to look at without fear.

Then one January morning, Elena called.

“Adrian?”

He stood instantly.

“What's wrong?”

“I’m bleeding.”

Everything inside him stopped.

“Where are you?”

“At the house.”

“Is someone with you?”

“No.”

“Call emergency services. Now.”

“I already did.”

“I’m coming.”

He drove north.

Halfway there, Elena's phone stopped answering.

Then Luca called.

“Adrian, don't go to Vermont.”

“What?”

“We found something in Gabriel's records.”

“What?”

“Caterina wasn't the only person feeding him information.”

Adrian tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“Who?”

Luca said the name.

May you like

Adrian looked at the road ahead.

The person Luca named was already inside Elena's Vermont house.
