Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind The Fire

The man stepped out of the elevator holding an old photograph of my family.

Nobody moved.

Not even Adrian.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Adrian had faced angry investors, police officers, and powerful enemies without hesitation.

But now...

He looked terrified.

The man walked slowly toward us.

He was older.

Late sixties.

Gray hair.

A scar crossing his left cheek.

And in his hand was the same photograph Marcus had shown me.

Except this one was different.

It wasn't just a picture.

It had something written on the back.

I couldn't see it.

Not yet.

The man stopped in front of my mother.

They looked at each other.

Like they had been waiting fifteen years for this moment.

Then he said:

"You shouldn't have come back."

My mother's face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

"You don't get to tell me where I belong anymore."

I stared at them.

My mind couldn't process what I was seeing.

My mother was alive.

My father was alive.

Everyone I thought I had lost was connected to a secret that had been buried for years.

And nobody had thought I deserved to know.

"Who is he?"

I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Adrian.

"Who is he?"

Adrian finally spoke.

"Thomas Hart."

My father's name.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

The man looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

"Olivia."

Hearing him say my name felt wrong.

A stranger saying the name my father used to whisper when I was a child.

I stepped backward.

"No."

My voice shook.

"No, you don't get to do that."

His expression changed.

"I know."

"Where were you?"

The room went silent.

"Where were you when I buried an empty coffin?"

Thomas lowered his head.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

I laughed.

But there was no happiness in it.

"Everyone says that."

I looked around.

"Everyone says they lied because they were protecting me."

I pointed at my mother.

"You disappeared."

Then Adrian.

"You hid the truth."

Then Clara.

"You watched me believe a lie for fifteen years."

My voice broke.

"So tell me."

I looked directly at Thomas.

"Who were you protecting me from?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my mother walked closer.

"From the people who caused the fire."

I froze.

The fire.

The story that destroyed my life.

The story everyone told me was an accident.

"It wasn't an accident?"

My mother shook her head.

"No."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"Who started it?"

Thomas looked at Adrian.

That small movement told me everything.

I turned toward Adrian.

"You know."

He didn't deny it.

"I know who ordered it."

My heart dropped.

"Who?"

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus was standing near the door.

Silent.

Watching.

Then Adrian said:

"Your father's business partner."

I frowned.

"My father didn't have business partners."

Thomas gave a painful smile.

"You thought I was an architect."

I stared.

"What?"

He looked away.

"I wasn't."

The room became quiet.

"I was investigating them."

"Investigating who?"

Thomas walked toward the table.

He placed the photograph down.

Then he turned it over.

On the back were five words.

THE VALE FOUNDATION FILE.

I looked at Adrian.

His face changed.

Because he knew exactly what it meant.

"The Vale Foundation?"

I asked.

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus laughed softly.

"Now she finally knows."

Adrian stepped toward him.

"Enough."

Marcus ignored him.

"The foundation wasn't created to help people."

He looked at me.

"It was created to control information."

I looked at Adrian.

"And you were part of it."

His eyes lowered.

"My father created it."

That answer hurt.

Not because Adrian was guilty.

Because I realized how deep this went.

He had been fighting against the same people who created his own family empire.

My mother reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

Not because I hated her.

Because I didn't know how to look at her.

"You were alive all this time."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I watched you grow from far away."

"Why?"

Her lips trembled.

"Because every time I tried to come back, someone threatened you."

I shook my head.

"I was alone."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

My voice became louder.

"You don't know what it feels like to visit a grave that doesn't have your mother's body in it."

She cried silently.

And for the first time, I saw the pain she carried.

But pain didn't erase the years.

It didn't erase the lies.

A loud noise suddenly came from outside the room.

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

"Security cameras."

Vanessa checked her phone.

Her face went pale.

"What?"

She showed the screen.

The hospital cameras were offline.

All of them.

Marcus smiled.

"They found us."

Thomas immediately moved toward the window.

"We need to leave."

I looked at him.

"Who found us?"

Nobody answered.

Then the hospital announcement system turned on.

A voice echoed through the hallway.

"Olivia Hart."

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

"You spent fifteen years looking for answers."

My blood turned cold.

"Now you're going to learn why your mother had to disappear."

Adrian grabbed my arm.

"We need to go."

But I pulled away.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I am done running."

The voice continued.

"Come to the old Hart residence."

My mother's face changed.

"No."

Thomas looked terrified.

"That's impossible."

The announcement ended.

A final message appeared on Vanessa's phone.

A location.

And a photograph.

She slowly turned the screen toward us.

It showed the old Hart house.

The house where the fire happened.

The house that had been abandoned for fifteen years.

But in the picture...

the front door was open.

May you like

And someone was standing inside.

Waiting for us.
