Chapter 7 - The Last Secret of the Voss Family

The door handle stopped moving.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone inside the archive room knew that whoever stood outside was connected to the truth they had spent years trying to uncover.
Adrian stood in front of the others.
Not behind them.
Not protected by them.
For the first time in months, he did not feel like a man losing control of his life.
He felt like the man who built it.
"Open the door."
Daniel looked at him.
"Adrian—"
"Open it."
The security chief slowly unlocked the door.
It moved.
And the person standing outside stepped inside.
Adrian froze.
Not because he recognized the face.
Because he recognized the voice.
"Hello, son."
The room went silent.
Victoria looked down.
Leon closed his eyes.
Daniel lowered his weapon.
Adrian stood completely still.
"Father."
The word came out almost impossible to say.
Because Elias Voss had been dead for twelve years.
The same night Leon disappeared.
The same night everything changed.
The same night Marcus began building his plan.
Adrian stared at the man standing in front of him.
His vision was still damaged.
But there were some things a person never forgot.
His father's voice.
His presence.
The feeling of standing before someone who had shaped his entire life.
"You were alive."
Elias nodded.
"Yes."
Adrian laughed quietly.
Not from happiness.
From pain.
"Everyone keeps coming back."
Elias looked at him.
"I know what it looks like."
"No."
Adrian stepped closer.
"You don't."
His voice became stronger.
"You disappeared."
"You let me believe Leon died."
"You let Marcus destroy my life."
Elias accepted every accusation.
"I did."
The answer surprised everyone.
Adrian expected excuses.
A lie.
A justification.
But Elias gave him none.
"Why?"
Elias looked at the old family documents around them.
"Because I made the same mistake your grandfather made."
Adrian frowned.
"What mistake?"
"I believed power could protect my family."
The room became quiet.
Elias continued.
"I spent my life building an empire because I thought money and influence could keep danger away."
He looked at Leon.
"But I never noticed the danger was already inside."
Adrian looked toward Marcus's files.
"Marcus."
Elias nodded.
"Marcus was not just an employee."
Everyone listened.
"He was the son of the man your grandfather destroyed."
The truth landed heavily.
"Years ago, your grandfather took everything from his family. Their business. Their reputation. Their power."
Elias sighed.
"Marcus spent his entire life waiting for revenge."
Adrian looked down.
"And you knew."
"Yes."
"You still trusted him."
"No."
Elias looked at him.
"I watched him."
Adrian frowned.
"Then why did you let him stay?"
"Because I wanted proof."
Daniel spoke quietly.
"And Leon found it."
Elias nodded.
"Leon discovered Marcus's plan before anyone else."
Adrian looked at his brother.
"The night you disappeared."
Leon nodded.
"Father found me before Marcus could."
Adrian looked between them.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Elias answered.
"Because Marcus had already surrounded you."
Adrian stayed silent.
"Your phone was monitored."
"Your house was watched."
"Your closest people were being manipulated."
Elias looked at him.
"Even if we told you the truth, Marcus would have known."
Adrian remembered.
The missed calls.
The strange events.
The small moments that never made sense.
It had all been part of something bigger.
"So you hid."
Leon nodded.
"We hid."
Adrian looked away.
For years, he had carried the pain of losing his brother.
For years, he blamed himself.
Now he finally understood.
He had not failed Leon.
He had been deceived.
But there was still one person missing.
The person responsible.
"Where is Marcus?"
Nobody answered.
Then the lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The security screens changed.
A single camera appeared.
The mansion entrance.
Marcus stood outside.
Holding a gun.
Adrian looked at the screen.
"He knew."
Daniel immediately moved.
"He has been waiting."
Marcus's voice came through the mansion speakers.
"Adrian."
Everyone froze.
The voice was calm.
The same calm voice Adrian had trusted for fifteen years.
"You finally found everyone."
Adrian walked toward the speaker.
"Why?"
A quiet laugh came through.
"Because you were always better at building than destroying."
Marcus continued.
"Your father built the empire."
"Your brother found the truth."
"Daniel protected the secret."
"And you?"
A pause.
"You were the only thing I could never control."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"You poisoned me."
"Yes."
"You tried to take my empire."
"Yes."
"You tried to make everyone believe I was weak."
Marcus laughed softly.
"That part worked."
Adrian looked around.
At Clara.
At Leon.
At Daniel.
At his father.
And he realized something.
Marcus was wrong.
He thought weakness was losing power.
But Adrian had learned something Marcus never understood.
A person was not powerful because people feared him.
A person was powerful because people stayed when he had nothing left.
"You lost, Marcus."
Silence.
Then Marcus answered:
"No."
The speaker clicked.
"Because you still don't know the last truth."
Everyone looked at the screen.
Marcus continued.
"The poison did more than damage your eyesight."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What are you talking about?"
"The poison was never designed only to make you blind."
A pause.
"It was designed to destroy your memory."
The room became silent.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"What?"
Daniel's face changed.
Because he knew.
Marcus continued.
"You forgot things, Adrian."
"Small things."
"Names."
"Conversations."
"Promises."
Adrian felt a chill.
Because it was true.
There were moments he could not remember.
Moments everyone told him he had forgotten.
Marcus's voice continued.
"And the thing you forgot most..."
A pause.
"Was the person who saved your life before."
Adrian frowned.
"What person?"
The speaker went silent.
Then the mansion doors opened.
Security guards rushed forward.
Marcus was no longer at the entrance.
He had escaped.
But on the floor where he stood was a small envelope.
Inside was a final document.
Adrian opened it.
And read the name.
Clara.
Everyone turned.
Clara looked shocked.
"No."
Adrian looked at the paper.
It was not an accusation.
It was a medical record.
From twelve years ago.
The same night Leon disappeared.
Clara's name was there.
Adrian looked at her.
"Explain."
Tears appeared in her eyes.
"I was there."
Nobody moved.
"I was working for your family before Marcus ever entered your life."
Adrian listened.
"I was the nurse who treated you after the attack that night."
The room became quiet.
"You were injured."
Clara continued.
"You don't remember because Marcus changed the records."
Adrian looked at her.
"You saved me."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Clara smiled sadly.
"Because I promised your brother I wouldn't reveal myself unless you were ready."
Leon looked at Adrian.
"She protected you all these years."
Adrian finally understood.
The person he thought was only a maid.
The person he almost accused.
Was one of the few people who had truly protected him.
He walked toward Clara.
"I was wrong about you."
She shook her head.
"You were hurt."
"No."
Adrian looked at everyone.
"I was blind."
The words were quiet.
But they meant more than his illness.
Days later, Marcus Hale was found.
The evidence from the archive exposed everything.
The poisoning.
The stolen money.
The false medical reports.
The disappearance of Leon.
The entire conspiracy collapsed.
Marcus spent the rest of his life facing the consequences of every choice he made.
But Adrian did not rebuild his empire the same way.
He changed it.
The criminal organization his father created became a legitimate business empire.
One built on security.
Investment.
Protection.
Not fear.
His eyesight slowly recovered after doctors removed the remaining effects of the poison.
It was not perfect.
But it was enough.
Enough to see Leon sitting across from him.
Enough to see Clara smile.
Enough to see the people who stayed.
Months later, Adrian stood outside the mansion.
The same place where he once believed he was losing everything.
Leon stood beside him.
"You know what is strange?"
Adrian smiled.
"What?"
"We spent years looking for the person who betrayed us."
Leon looked at him.
"And?"
Adrian looked toward the future.
"We found the people who never did."
For the first time in many years, Adrian Voss was not surrounded by enemies.
He was surrounded by family.
And when the morning came, nobody placed a poisoned glass on his table.
May you like
Only a cup of coffee.
Prepared by someone he trusted.
