Chapter 5 - The Brother Behind the Locked Door

The man standing inside the archive room did not look like a ghost.
He looked alive.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Adrian could not see his face clearly anymore, but he did not need perfect vision to recognize him.
Some memories were too deep to disappear.
"Leon."
The name left Adrian's mouth like a question.
The man stepped forward.
"Yes."
Clara covered her mouth.
The security chief lowered his weapon slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew what to say.
Because everyone in that room understood the impossible thing that had just happened.
Leon Voss was alive.
The brother Adrian had buried twelve years ago was standing in front of him.
Adrian's hands tightened.
"You're dead."
Leon looked at him.
"I know."
The answer was too calm.
Too simple.
Adrian hated it.
"You know?"
His voice became colder.
"You know I buried an empty grave?"
Leon looked down.
"I know."
"You know I spent twelve years believing I lost you?"
"I know."
"Then why didn't you come back?"
The room went silent.
For a moment, Leon looked like the younger brother Adrian remembered.
The boy who used to apologize without being asked.
The boy who always carried the weight of everyone else's pain.
But then that expression disappeared.
"I tried."
Adrian laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
"Everyone says that."
Leon stepped closer.
"Marcus stopped me."
The name changed everything.
Again.
Adrian stared at him.
"What did he do?"
Leon looked toward the archive shelves.
"He made sure I disappeared before I could tell you the truth."
Adrian walked inside the room.
"Start talking."
Leon nodded.
"Twelve years ago, I found something in the company accounts."
"The stolen money?"
"Yes."
"But you said it was more than stealing."
Leon looked at him.
"Because it was."
He moved toward an old cabinet.
Behind several files, he found a hidden compartment.
Adrian watched.
"You still know this room."
Leon smiled slightly.
"I helped design it."
He opened the compartment.
Inside was a small black box.
Adrian's heart tightened.
"What's that?"
"Everything Marcus tried to erase."
Leon placed the box on the table.
The security chief immediately checked it.
"No explosives."
Adrian opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Old recordings.
And one name repeated over and over.
Marcus Hale.
Adrian picked up the first document.
It was dated twelve years ago.
A transfer record.
Millions of dollars moved through accounts Adrian never knew existed.
"How?"
Leon answered quietly.
"Marcus created fake companies."
Adrian looked at the papers.
"He was stealing from me."
"No."
Leon shook his head.
"He was preparing."
"For what?"
Leon looked directly at him.
"Your death."
The words hit harder than Adrian expected.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The poison.
The blindness.
The fake illness.
The fear.
Marcus was not waiting for Adrian to disappear.
He was creating the moment when everyone would accept it.
"When did he start?"
Leon looked away.
"Before you think."
"How long?"
"Since the beginning."
The room became silent.
Adrian felt something inside him break.
Because Marcus was not someone who betrayed him after becoming powerful.
Marcus had been planning this while standing beside him.
While calling him brother.
While protecting him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Leon looked at him.
"I tried."
"Again with that answer."
Leon accepted the anger.
"I sent you evidence."
Adrian froze.
"When?"
"The night I disappeared."
Adrian remembered the missed calls.
The messages he never opened.
The meeting he never attended.
"I never received anything."
Leon nodded.
"Because Marcus intercepted it."
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"You knew?"
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I knew part of it."
Adrian's anger turned.
"You knew my brother was alive?"
Daniel did not answer.
That was enough.
Adrian stepped toward him.
"You knew."
"I knew he survived."
"And you said nothing."
Daniel looked at him.
"Because if Marcus knew I found him, Leon would have died."
Adrian stopped.
The answer made sense.
And he hated that.
Because too many things made sense now.
Too many lies had been built around him.
Clara looked at Leon.
"Where have you been all these years?"
Leon looked toward the window.
"Running."
"From Marcus?"
"From everyone."
Adrian frowned.
"Everyone?"
Leon nodded.
"Because Marcus wasn't working alone."
The room changed.
Adrian looked at him.
"Who else?"
Leon reached into the box.
He removed another photograph.
A photograph of a group meeting.
Several men sat around a table.
Marcus was there.
But there was someone else.
Someone Adrian recognized.
His breathing stopped.
Because the person beside Marcus was someone from his own family.
Someone who had attended his brother's funeral.
Someone who had comforted him when he believed Leon was gone.
Clara noticed his reaction.
"Who is that?"
Adrian did not answer immediately.
Because saying the name made it real.
"It's impossible."
Leon looked at him.
"But it happened."
Adrian touched the photograph.
His hand trembled slightly.
"She was there."
Daniel looked confused.
"Who?"
Adrian slowly turned the photo around.
The name on the back was written by Leon.
One sentence.
The person who helped Marcus bury the truth was inside your house from the beginning.
Adrian stared at it.
Then the security alarm suddenly activated.
A red light flashed above the door.
The security chief checked his device.
"Someone accessed the main entrance."
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
"Who?"
The man looked terrified.
"I don't know."
"Check the camera."
The screen turned on.
The mansion entrance appeared.
A woman stood outside.
Holding a small suitcase.
Adrian looked at the screen.
Even with his failing vision, he knew the shape.
The posture.
The way she stood.
The way she held herself.
Leon saw the image.
His face changed completely.
"No."
Adrian turned.
"You know her?"
Leon whispered:
"She was the reason I disappeared."
May you like
The woman outside slowly raised her hand.
And pressed the doorbell.
