Chapter 6 - The Memory They Tried To Erase

The gunshot changed everything.

One second, I was standing in my parents' living room, surrounded by secrets that had been hidden from me for years.

The next second, I was on the floor.

Colonel Reed's arm was locked around me as he pulled me behind the stone wall near the fireplace.

The lights were gone.

The house was silent except for the sound of shattered glass falling onto the floor.

My ears were ringing.

My heart was pounding.

And somewhere outside the broken window, someone was still watching us.

"Stay down," Reed whispered.

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

His face was tense.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

He knew.

That scared me more than the gunshot.

"You know who it is."

Reed didn't answer.

Another shadow moved outside.

My father was on the floor beside the couch.

For the first time in my life, he looked helpless.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

Just afraid.

"Robert," the man outside called.

My father's face went pale.

The voice continued.

"You knew this day would come."

My breathing stopped.

Because whoever was outside wasn't talking to Reed.

He was talking to my father.

My father swallowed.

"Everyone needs to leave."

I looked at him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still trying to give orders.

I slowly stood up.

Reed grabbed my arm.

"Emma."

"No."

I looked at him.

"I'm done hiding."

The room became still.

My family watched me.

Claire looked like she wanted to apologize.

My mother looked like she had been carrying guilt for years.

Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.

And my father...

My father looked like he was seeing someone else.

Not his daughter.

Someone he had been afraid of all along.

I walked toward the broken window.

"Who are you?" I called.

The person outside didn't answer.

Instead, a small device was thrown through the window.

It landed on the floor.

A tiny screen activated.

A video began playing.

Michael appeared.

Again.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

He was standing in a military facility.

Beside him was Commander Elias Voss.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Michael looked directly at the camera.

"Emma, if this message is playing, then they failed to stop you."

My hands started shaking.

Michael continued.

"I need you to remember something."

Remember.

That word hit me.

Because I knew what it meant.

The video from before.

My younger self.

The military uniform.

The words.

"They erased my memory."

I looked at Reed.

He looked away.

"You knew."

His silence was enough.

"You knew they erased my memories."

Reed closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The room exploded.

My father's face changed.

Claire whispered.

"What?"

I turned toward Reed.

"How?"

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw regret in his eyes.

"Because I was there."

The words hurt.

Not because he admitted it.

Because some part of me already knew.

"What did you do?"

Reed took a breath.

"After the operation went wrong, Michael discovered there was a leak inside the organization."

He looked at the video.

"He also discovered someone had access to your personal files."

My stomach tightened.

"My files?"

"You weren't just Michael's wife, Emma."

The room became silent.

"You were part of Operation Falcon."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You were one of the original architects."

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

"That's impossible."

Reed stepped closer.

"Your memories were removed because the people behind the operation believed you were the only person who could expose them."

I looked at my father.

"And he knew?"

My father didn't speak.

That was all the answer I needed.

"You helped them."

His eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.

Regret.

Shame.

Fear.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

I stared at him.

"By destroying my life?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"By making you disappear."

The words felt heavier than the gunshot.

My father continued.

"When Michael discovered the truth, he came to me."

Reed nodded.

"He asked me to protect you."

I looked at him.

"But you let me believe he was dead."

Reed looked down.

"Because if you remembered everything, they would have killed you."

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But another part of me understood something terrifying.

Everyone around me had been lying.

But maybe not everyone had been trying to hurt me.

The video continued.

Michael appeared again.

His expression was different now.

More serious.

"Emma, if you remember nothing else, remember this."

He paused.

"The person who betrayed us was not the person you suspected."

My eyes moved toward my father.

Michael continued.

"It was someone who knew both of us."

A chill went through me.

Someone who knew both of us.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

The video ended.

A final message appeared.

"Memory restoration sequence available."

I stared at the words.

Reed stepped forward.

"Emma, before you do this, you need to understand."

"What?"

"When your memories return, you won't just remember the mission."

His voice lowered.

"You'll remember why Michael died."

The room went quiet.

I looked at the screen.

The answer was right there.

Everything I wanted.

Everything I feared.

The truth.

I pressed the button.

The screen flashed.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then my vision blurred.

A sharp pain moved through my head.

And suddenly...

I remembered.

A military room.

A table.

A file.

Michael standing beside me.

Not as my husband.

As my partner.

"You can't do this alone," I had told him.

He smiled.

"I knew you'd say that."

Another memory.

A hidden conversation.

A voice.

A person saying:

"Once Emma forgets, the operation ends."

Another memory.

Michael holding my hand.

His face covered in fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

"Promise me you'll never trust the person who claims they saved you."

I fell to my knees.

Because I remembered.

The final night.

The last conversation before Michael left.

The person who came to our house.

The person who gave him the mission.

The person who knew everything.

I opened my eyes.

Everyone was staring at me.

Reed looked terrified.

My father looked defeated.

Because he knew.

I remembered.

I slowly stood.

My voice barely came out.

"It wasn't an enemy."

Nobody moved.

"It wasn't a foreign operation."

My eyes turned toward the person I had trusted my entire life.

"It was someone inside our family."

My mother gasped.

Claire started crying.

My father closed his eyes.

But I wasn't looking at him.

Because suddenly, I understood the final memory.

The reason Michael recorded everything.

The reason he prepared me.

The reason he trusted no one.

Because the person who betrayed us was still alive.

And they were coming back.

My phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Only three words.

"Ask your mother."

I slowly looked toward her.

She was shaking.

Then she whispered a name I never expected to hear.

"Emma..."

May you like

She reached into her coat pocket.

And pulled out Michael's missing wedding ring.
