Chapter 4 - The Truth Beneath My Father’s Name

The front door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The sound of the old hinges cutting through the silence felt louder than a gunshot.

Colonel Reed immediately raised his hand.

A warning.

A command.

Everyone froze.

I stood behind him, holding Michael’s file against my chest.

My father looked toward the entrance.

And for the first time that night, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Dad?" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

His eyes stayed locked on the doorway.

That was when I knew.

Whatever was coming through that door was something even my father was afraid of.

A shadow appeared.

Then a man stepped inside.

He was wearing a dark jacket.

No uniform.

No weapon visible.

Just a calm expression that made the room feel colder.

My mother covered her mouth.

Claire stepped backward.

Daniel whispered something I couldn't hear.

But my father said one word.

"No."

The man looked at him.

"Hello, Robert."

My father's face changed.

Because this wasn't a stranger.

They knew each other.

The man walked farther into the room.

His eyes moved toward me.

Then toward Michael’s file.

"Emma Carter."

Hearing my full name from his mouth made my skin crawl.

"Who are you?" I asked.

The man ignored my question.

Instead, he looked at Colonel Reed.

"You failed to keep her away from this."

Reed's expression hardened.

"She had a right to know."

The man smiled slightly.

"That's exactly what Michael said."

My heart stopped.

"You knew Michael?"

The man looked at me.

"I knew him better than most."

I stepped forward.

"Then tell me why my husband died."

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

The man glanced at my father.

Then back at me.

"Because he found the truth."

I gripped the folder tighter.

"What truth?"

He walked toward the table.

Nobody stopped him.

Not even Reed.

That scared me.

He placed a small device beside the classified file.

A recording device.

"Your husband discovered that the operation he was assigned to complete was not the mission he was told about."

I looked at Reed.

He didn't deny it.

"Michael was sent to recover stolen military intelligence," the man continued. "But the information wasn't stolen by an enemy."

My stomach tightened.

"Then who stole it?"

The man's eyes moved toward my father.

Nobody needed to answer.

I already knew.

"No."

My voice came out weak.

My father looked at me.

"Emma—"

"No."

I shook my head.

"You're saying my father..."

"I’m saying your father was involved."

The room exploded.

My mother started crying.

Claire looked at my father like she was seeing him for the first time.

Daniel stepped forward.

"This is insane."

The man turned toward him.

"Is it?"

Daniel stopped.

Because apparently, he knew something too.

I looked around the room.

Every person I loved had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

I felt like I was standing in the middle of a story where I was the last person allowed to read the ending.

"Why?" I asked.

Nobody answered.

"Why would my father do this?"

My father finally spoke.

"You don't understand."

I laughed quietly.

"No, Dad. That's the problem."

I looked at him.

"Nobody ever lets me understand anything."

His face softened for a moment.

Then hardened again.

"I was trying to protect this family."

I stared at him.

"You destroyed it."

He looked away.

That hurt more than an argument.

Because he didn't deny it.

The man in the jacket opened the recording device.

A voice filled the room.

Michael's voice.

I stopped breathing.

"Emma, if you're hearing this, then Reed reached you."

My eyes filled immediately.

Hearing him again was like being pulled back into another life.

A life where I still believed tomorrow was guaranteed.

"I need you to listen carefully."

The recording continued.

"The person responsible for my death isn't the person you think."

Everyone became still.

Michael continued.

"I spent months investigating the leak."

A pause.

Then his voice lowered.

"The person who gave away the information was someone close to me."

My hand moved to my mouth.

The recording stopped.

I looked at Reed.

"That's all?"

He shook his head.

"No."

The man beside the table spoke.

"The rest of the recording was hidden."

"Where?"

He looked at me.

"Inside something Michael knew only you would find."

I thought about the envelope.

The code.

The file.

The coordinates.

"What is the location?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the staircase.

"Ask your sister."

Everyone turned.

Claire froze.

"No."

My father closed his eyes.

Like he knew this moment was coming.

I looked at my sister.

"Claire."

She looked terrified.

"I didn't want this."

"What did you know?"

Her lips trembled.

"I knew Michael found something."

"What?"

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

"I knew he was going to expose someone."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

Claire started crying.

"Your father."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even though part of me already knew.

I still wanted someone to tell me it wasn't true.

I wanted someone to wake me up.

I wanted Michael to walk through that door and tell me everyone was lying.

But he wasn't coming back.

And the truth was standing in front of me.

My father had known.

My sister had known.

Everyone had known.

Except me.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked Claire.

She looked broken.

"Because he threatened us."

My father's expression changed.

"Enough."

Claire flinched.

That one reaction told me everything.

My father had always controlled this family.

Not through love.

Through fear.

The man in the jacket stepped closer.

"Emma, you need to leave."

I looked at him.

"Leave where?"

"Anywhere that isn't here."

Reed nodded.

"He's right."

I looked at my own house.

The place where I grew up.

The place where I thought I was safe.

Now it felt like a trap.

"What happens if I stay?"

Nobody answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another secure message.

This time from Michael.

Impossible.

My hands shook as I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

"Emma, don't trust Colonel Reed."

I froze.

Slowly, I looked up.

Reed was watching me.

His expression was impossible to read.

The man beside him noticed my reaction.

"What did the message say?"

I didn't answer.

Because suddenly I didn't know who was protecting me.

And who was leading me deeper into the danger.

Michael trusted Reed.

Michael warned me about everyone.

Except one person.

My phone vibrated again.

A second message appeared.

A photograph loaded.

It showed Michael standing beside someone.

Someone I had never seen before.

Someone wearing a military uniform.

Someone holding the same file I had in my hands.

And beneath the photograph was a name.

May you like

The name that made Colonel Reed step backward.

Because it was the name of the person who was supposed to be dead.
