Chapter 9 - A Brother’s Final Recording

Smoke entered beneath the door.

Gabriel broke the lock.

They evacuated Elena through a service stairwell while Mercer carried Douglas.

Outside, flames consumed the administrative wing.

Someone had destroyed the nursing home records.

But Elena had already memorized what mattered.

Victor needed Douglas alive because Antonio had created a trust requiring his son’s biometric authorization when he reached adulthood.

If Douglas died, the assets transferred to Gabriel.

Victor could never control them.

But if Douglas lived under Victor’s guardianship, Victor could control billions for nearly two decades.

“He wasn’t trying to kill Douglas,” Chalice said.

Elena shook her head.

“He was trying to make everyone believe Douglas was dead.”

The hospital assassin had not carried poison.

The syringe contained a sedative.

He intended to remove Douglas unnoticed.

Chalice had ruined the plan.

Victor had spent ninety-one days trying to recover him.

Gabriel looked at Chalice.

“You saved him before you even knew what you were saving him from.”

She looked at Douglas.

“I just saw a man with the wrong shoes.”

Sometimes history turned on tiny things.

A shoe.

A medal.

A nurse refusing to look away.

Elena handed Gabriel a flash drive.

Antonio’s final recording.

They watched it together.

Antonio spoke directly to Gabriel.

“I know what you think strength is.”

Gabriel looked away.

Antonio smiled on-screen.

“You think it means standing between everyone you love and every bullet. You’re wrong.”

Gabriel’s eyes filled.

“Strength is building a life where the people you love don’t have to expect bullets.”

Chalice watched Gabriel absorb the words.

Antonio told him to dismantle the criminal side of the Holmes empire.

Use the legitimate businesses.

Protect the employees.

Raise Douglas somewhere he could be a child instead of an heir.

Then Antonio said something unexpected.

“If the nurse named Chalice Imhof is there, trust her.”

Chalice stared.

Antonio had known her name from her mother.

Gabriel laughed softly through tears.

“My brother planned everything.”

“Not everything.”

“No?”

“He couldn’t plan you.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Something shifted.

Not fear.

Not grief.

Something warmer.

He touched her cheek carefully.

Chalice did not move away.

Then Douglas cried.

They both laughed.

The moment broke.

But not completely.

Elena watched them from across the room and smiled.

Later, Gabriel made a decision.

He would turn Antonio’s ledger over to federal investigators through an attorney.

Not because he trusted the system blindly.

Because Antonio had collected enough evidence that no single corrupt official could bury it.

Victor’s empire would collapse.

But first they needed Victor himself.

Elena knew how.

She called him.

“I have the original ledger.”

Victor answered immediately.

They arranged an exchange.

Old Holmes estate.

Midnight.

Gabriel prepared his men.

Chalice prepared Douglas.

“You’re staying here,” Gabriel said.

“No.”

“Chalice.”

“No.”

He stared at her.

She stared back.

Finally he sighed.

“You are exhausting.”

“I’ve been told.”

At 11:43 p.m., they reached the estate.

The front door stood open.

Inside, one lamp burned.

A chair sat in the center of the foyer.

On it was a pink baby blanket.

Douglas’s blanket.

Chalice looked down.

The blanket in her arms was different.

Gabriel lifted the one from the chair.

Blood stained the underside.

Then a phone rang somewhere upstairs.

Gabriel answered it.

Victor’s voice whispered only four words.

“Ask her about Isabella.”

May you like

Gabriel turned toward Chalice.

And from the dark room behind them, a woman said, “Yes, Gabriel. Ask her.”
