Chapter 14 - The Choice Gabriel Never Expected

Gabriel’s old instincts returned immediately.

Lock the house.

Arm the men.

Move Douglas.

Hunt the enemy.

Chalice stopped him.

“That’s what whoever did this wants.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“They threatened Douglas.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not gambling with him.”

“Neither am I.”

She pointed at the photograph.

“Look.”

The message was written in blood.

But Victor had died from a gunshot.

The blood pattern was staged.

Someone wanted Gabriel enraged.

Someone wanted the old Gabriel back.

The man who reacted before thinking.

Crane contacted them.

He was the target.

Victor had been killed by Michael Dane’s remaining associates.

Dane had begun cooperating with prosecutors.

The network feared exposure.

If they could make Gabriel retaliate violently, they could discredit him as a witness and turn the investigation into a gang war.

Antonio’s evidence might collapse under accusations of criminal manipulation.

Gabriel had two choices.

War.

Or law.

Everyone who knew the old Gabriel expected war.

He surprised them.

He called the federal prosecutor.

He surrendered the remaining weapons.

He provided every financial record.

Then he publicly announced the closure of all illegal Holmes operations.

The reaction was immediate.

Former allies called him weak.

Enemies tested him.

Businesses threatened to leave.

Gabriel continued.

Within forty-eight hours, investigators arrested the men responsible for Victor’s death.

Crane testified.

Shaw testified.

Luca testified.

Elena testified.

Chalice testified.

Michael Dane finally confessed to arranging the Hanover Street ambush.

Victor ordered it.

Dane supplied Antonio’s route.

Crane had attempted to disrupt the plan but arrived too late.

The truth was complete.

Almost.

Dane requested one final meeting.

Gabriel refused.

Chalice attended instead.

Dane looked smaller without expensive suits and powerful clients.

“Why did Isabella choose you?” he asked.

“My mother.”

“No.”

Chalice frowned.

Dane smiled.

“She chose you because she watched you in the emergency room.”

“When?”

“Months before.”

Isabella had secretly visited Mass General.

She watched Chalice treat a homeless man who had no insurance, no family, and no influence.

Chalice stayed past her shift because he was afraid.

Isabella remembered.

When she was dying and saw Chalice’s badge, the decision was immediate.

Not because of lineage.

Not because of a conspiracy.

Because she had seen who Chalice was when nobody important was watching.

Chalice left the prison interview shaken.

Gabriel waited outside.

“Well?”

She told him.

He smiled.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Gabriel.”

“My brother chose people based on loyalty. Isabella chose based on character.”

“And?”

“You’ve spent months insisting you were just a nurse in the wrong place.”

“I was.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You were exactly where Douglas needed you.”

Chalice’s eyes filled.

Gabriel touched her face.

This time she kissed him.

No dramatic declaration.

No audience.

Just a quiet kiss outside a federal courthouse after ninety-one days of terror.

When they separated, Gabriel looked almost stunned.

“You did that.”

“I noticed.”

“Again?”

She laughed.

“Eventually.”

Six months later, Gabriel’s legitimate companies survived.

Some prospered.

Some failed.

He accepted both.

Douglas grew.

Chalice returned to Mass General part-time.

Gabriel hated her night shifts.

She worked them anyway.

The criminal cases approached trial.

Then one afternoon a certified envelope arrived.

Inside was Antonio’s final legal document.

Gabriel and Chalice read it together.

It contained instructions for Douglas’s guardianship.

One paragraph had been sealed separately.

FOR GABRIEL AND CHALICE ONLY.

Gabriel opened it.

He read the first sentence.

Then looked at her.

“What?”

He handed her the page.

May you like

Chalice read Antonio’s final request.

And tears immediately filled her eyes.
