Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Signed Douglas Dead

The voice belonged to Samuel Crane.
Gabriel had buried him.
Or believed he had.
Crane had betrayed Antonio years earlier and supposedly died during a warehouse fire.
Now he stepped into the emergency light.
Scarred.
Alive.
Smiling.
“Hello, Gabriel.”
Gabriel attacked before anyone could react.
The fight was short and brutal.
Crane escaped through a stairwell after firing into the ceiling.
But he left something behind.
The missing ledger page.
Gabriel picked it up.
“Too easy,” Chalice said.
“Yes.”
The page named Victor’s informant.
Evan Mercer.
Mercer stared at it.
“That’s not my signature.”
Gabriel pointed his gun at him.
“Convince me.”
Mercer did.
He showed them his financial records.
The account listed beside his name had been opened before he turned eighteen.
Someone had built a false trail years in advance.
Victor was preparing scapegoats.
Dr. Shaw finally admitted she had done something similar.
She signed Douglas dead because Antonio had created an emergency protocol.
If both parents died and Douglas survived, Shaw was supposed to erase the child administratively until Gabriel could be verified as safe.
But Isabella changed the plan.
She chose Chalice.
“Why me?” Chalice demanded.
“Because of your mother.”
“My mother was dead.”
Shaw looked at her.
“No.”
The word landed like a blow.
Chalice stepped backward.
“What?”
“Your mother survived the crash.”
“You said—”
“I said the crash happened.”
“Where is she?”
Shaw’s eyes filled with regret.
“Victor found her first.”
Chalice understood.
“No.”
“She survived three weeks.”
Chalice covered her mouth.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“Because she made us promise.”
“That is not an answer!”
“She knew Victor would come after you if he knew you mattered.”
Chalice turned away.
For years she had mourned an instant death.
Now she had to mourn three hidden weeks.
Gabriel approached but did not touch her.
She eventually leaned against him herself.
His hand rested carefully on her shoulder.
No words.
None were needed.
Then Shaw gave Chalice one last item.
Her mother’s nursing watch.
The back had been engraved.
SAVE THE CHILD, NOT THE EMPIRE.
Chalice stared at it.
Her mother had known.
Not Douglas specifically.
The pattern.
The Holmes family kept protecting money, businesses, territory.
Her mother believed the only thing worth saving was the next generation.
Gabriel read the engraving.
“She was right.”
Chalice looked at him.
“Can you live like you believe that?”
He had no immediate answer.
They returned to the compound.
Douglas was safe.
The photographs had been staged in another building designed to resemble the nursery.
Victor wanted them frightened.
Divided.
Suspicious.
Gabriel ordered every weapon collected and every guard individually cleared.
At 3:00 a.m., Chalice finally slept beside Douglas.
She woke to Gabriel sitting outside the door.
“You stayed here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I promised.”
She stared at him.
“You never promised me anything.”
“No.”
His gaze went to Douglas.
“I promised Antonio.”
A scream came from downstairs.
Gabriel stood.
Mercer rushed into the corridor carrying a bloody envelope.
Inside was Dr. Shaw’s hospital badge.
And a note.
ONE TRAITOR WASN’T ENOUGH.
Gabriel turned it over.
Another sentence appeared on the back.
ASK CHALICE WHAT SHE DID THE NIGHT ANTONIO DIED.
May you like
Every eye in the hallway turned toward her.
And Gabriel quietly asked, “Chalice… what did you do?”
