Chapter 7 - The Truth Buried Under West March

The archive door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Not because we were calm.

Because every person in that hallway understood the same thing.

Someone was on the other side.

Someone who had been waiting.

Michael Carter stepped in front of me.

That single movement told me more than any explanation could.

My father.

A man who had faced wars.

A man who had commanded soldiers.

A man who had disappeared to protect secrets.

Was afraid of what was behind that door.

"Move back," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"Who is it?"

His eyes stayed on the opening.

"Someone who should never have found you."

The door opened wider.

A shadow appeared.

Then a voice came from inside.

"You always did protect her, Michael."

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from a file.

Not from a recording.

From years ago.

From meetings.

From missions.

From a time when I believed everyone around me was fighting for the same side.

The person stepped forward.

General Thomas Cole.

Ryan Cole's father.

The man who was supposed to be the hero after Black Horizon.

The man who attended the memorial.

The man who stood beside Michael Carter while everyone mourned the fallen.

The man who smiled while my team was buried.

Commander Reyes whispered:

"Thomas..."

Cole smiled.

"David."

There was no anger between them.

Only history.

The kind of history that carried too many secrets.

I looked at Michael.

"You knew."

Michael did not answer.

That silence hurt more than words.

"You knew he was alive."

Michael finally looked at me.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"And you let me believe he was gone?"

"No."

His voice became quiet.

"I let you believe everyone was gone."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas Cole stepped fully into the hallway.

He looked exactly like the photographs.

Older.

More tired.

But still carrying that same confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed he would always control the room.

"Emma, your father has spent years making you believe he was protecting you."

Cole looked at Michael.

"But he was protecting himself."

Michael's expression hardened.

"Don't listen to him."

Cole laughed softly.

"Still the same."

He looked at me.

"Still hiding behind half-truths."

I stepped forward.

"Both of you stop."

The hallway became silent.

"I am done listening to people tell me what I can handle."

I looked at Michael.

"Tell me the truth."

Then I looked at Cole.

"And you."

I pointed at the security screens.

"You said my father ordered you to kill me."

Cole smiled.

"There it is."

He looked satisfied.

"The question he never wanted you to ask."

Michael's face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

That was worse.

Because I had never seen him look like that before.

"Emma..."

I interrupted him.

"No."

My voice shook.

But I did not stop.

"Answer me."

Michael looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said:

"I ordered the mission."

The words hit like a physical blow.

Daniel looked away.

Commander Reyes closed his eyes.

I felt the floor beneath me disappear.

"You ordered Black Horizon."

"Yes."

"You sent us there."

"Yes."

"You knew what was going to happen?"

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed me.

"I knew there was a possibility."

A possibility.

That was the phrase.

The phrase people used when they were afraid to say the truth.

"You knew."

Michael looked down.

"I knew there was a traitor inside the organization."

"And you still sent us."

"I thought I could control it."

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes pain became too heavy to hold.

"You thought you could control it."

I looked at Daniel.

"My team died because you thought you could control it."

Daniel lowered his head.

The silence answered everything.

Michael stepped closer.

"I was trying to expose Cole."

Thomas smiled.

"Careful, Michael."

He looked at me.

"Tell her everything."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Enough."

"No."

Cole walked toward the table.

"The girl deserves the truth."

I watched him place a file beside the black drive.

A file with my name.

But this time, something was different.

The label.

BLACK HORIZON — FINAL REPORT.

I opened it.

The first page showed the official mission summary.

The second page was different.

Handwritten notes.

My father's handwriting.

I read the first sentence.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

My hands stopped.

I turned the page.

There was a list of names.

Members of my team.

Daniel Brooks.

Three others.

Then one name circled.

Thomas Cole.

Beneath it:

Confirmed internal threat.

I looked up.

Cole was still smiling.

"Your father suspected me."

Michael said nothing.

"Then why am I alive?" Cole asked.

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

The question that connected everything.

If Michael knew.

If Cole was the enemy.

Why did Cole survive?

Why did Daniel disappear?

Why did I become the only person who remembered nothing?

Cole leaned closer.

"Because your father made a mistake."

Michael looked at him.

"No."

"Yes."

Cole tapped the file.

"He trusted the wrong person."

My eyes moved between them.

"Who?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Cole looked at Daniel.

And smiled.

Daniel's face changed.

A reaction.

Small.

But enough.

I noticed.

Because I had spent years reading people's reactions before they spoke.

"No."

Daniel whispered.

I looked at him.

"Daniel?"

Cole smiled wider.

"Ask him."

My heart began beating faster.

"Ask him what?"

Daniel stepped back.

"Emma, don't."

The words made everything worse.

Because people only said "don't" when there was something they did not want revealed.

I looked at Michael.

"Tell me."

He remained silent.

I looked at Commander Reyes.

He looked away.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Again.

Cole walked toward the monitor.

He connected a small device.

A video appeared.

A battlefield camera.

Black Horizon.

The footage was damaged.

But I recognized the location.

The same place where my memories ended.

The same place where I woke up after the explosion.

The same place where everyone told me my team had been lost.

The video showed my team moving through the area.

Then Daniel appeared.

Alive.

Standing beside someone.

Someone wearing a different uniform.

Someone I could not see clearly.

Cole paused the footage.

"Watch carefully."

The image zoomed in.

The person beside Daniel turned slightly.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the face.

Not because I knew him.

Because I knew exactly where I had seen him.

In my own memories.

Before everything went wrong.

Michael whispered:

"Emma..."

I looked at Daniel.

He was crying.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Just broken.

Because the secret he had carried for years was finally standing in front of me.

Cole pressed play.

The recording continued.

Daniel turned toward the camera.

And said something that made my blood run cold.

"She doesn't know yet."

The video froze.

The hallway became silent.

Then another line appeared beneath the footage.

Recorded three minutes after Black Horizon began.

And it was addressed to me.

Emma...

You were never the target.

You were the witness.

Before anyone could speak, the archive lights suddenly went out again.

A single emergency light turned on.

And on the wall behind us, a new message appeared.

Not from Cole.

Not from Michael.

Not from Daniel.

A message written in fresh ink.

I stepped closer.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It was mine.

May you like

And underneath the message was a date.

Tomorrow.
