Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

The photograph shook slightly in the man's hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he knew exactly what that image meant.

The stranger stood beneath the emergency lights of West March Military Academy, holding a picture that should have been buried with the past.

My past.

My team's past.

The past that had followed me for years.

"Emma Carter."

He said my name like he had been waiting a long time to say it.

I stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

A cold, familiar smile.

The kind of smile worn by someone who knew secrets gave them power.

"You already know."

I looked at Daniel.

His expression had changed completely.

The confidence he had carried since appearing alive disappeared.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not of the man.

Of what the man represented.

"Daniel," I said quietly.

"Tell me who he is."

Daniel did not answer.

That was when I knew.

Whatever was happening was bigger than a hidden file.

Bigger than my father.

Bigger than Black Horizon.

The stranger walked into the light.

He was older than the photograph I had seen.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A military posture that never disappeared, even after years away.

He looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

"You two were always the hardest pieces to remove."

Commander Reyes moved beside me.

"Identify yourself."

The man looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

"Still following orders, David?"

The commander's face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"You."

The stranger smiled.

"Yes."

A single word.

But it carried years of history.

I looked between them.

"You know him."

Commander Reyes did not deny it.

"I thought he was dead."

The man tilted his head.

"Everyone did."

My chest tightened.

Another person who was supposed to be dead.

Another person who had returned.

Another secret buried beneath my entire life.

"Enough," I said.

Everyone stopped.

I looked directly at the stranger.

"I am tired of people appearing from the past and expecting me to understand."

The man's expression became serious.

"Good."

"Good?"

"Because anger means you are finally asking the right questions."

I hated that he sounded like he knew me.

Like he had studied me.

Like he had been waiting for this exact version of me to appear.

I pointed toward the photograph.

"Explain that."

He looked down.

The picture showed my old team.

Six soldiers.

Six people who entered Black Horizon.

Only two of us were supposed to have survived.

Me.

And Daniel.

But someone had crossed out one face.

The word beneath it remained.

TRAITOR.

"Who wrote that?" I asked.

The man looked at me.

"Your father."

My hands tightened.

"No."

"Yes."

"My father would never—"

"Your father knew the truth."

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Because part of me still defended Michael Carter.

Even after everything.

Even after the lies.

Because no matter what secrets he kept, he was still the man who raised me.

The man who taught me how to stand.

How to survive.

How to never abandon someone who needed help.

The stranger placed the photograph on the table.

"Michael Carter spent three years trying to uncover who destroyed Black Horizon."

Daniel looked at him.

"And he failed."

The stranger's eyes moved toward Daniel.

"No."

A pause.

"He succeeded."

The room became silent.

I looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked away.

The stranger answered.

"It means Michael discovered the betrayal before the mission ended."

I stared at him.

"Then why did he disappear?"

The stranger's expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something real.

Not arrogance.

Not control.

Regret.

"Because the person who betrayed your team was someone he trusted."

My heart sank.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

The stranger looked toward the screen.

The one still showing Ryan Cole's file.

"Your cadet friend."

I frowned.

"Ryan?"

"No."

He pointed at the document.

"His father."

The name appeared again.

General Thomas Cole.

I remembered him.

Everyone in the military world knew him.

A respected officer.

A decorated commander.

A man who built a reputation around honor.

A man who stood beside Michael Carter for years.

A man who had attended the memorial service after Black Horizon.

"He was there," I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes."

"At the memorial."

"Yes."

My stomach turned.

The person who betrayed us had stood among the people mourning us.

Had watched families receive letters.

Had watched our names become memories.

And nobody knew.

The stranger opened another file.

Inside were pages of reports.

Photos.

Messages.

I scanned the documents.

Most were classified.

But one page caught my attention.

A mission timeline.

Black Horizon.

The final hour.

I read the last entry.

Team leader Daniel Brooks confirmed deceased.

Medic Emma Carter missing.

Recovery impossible.

I looked at Daniel.

"Missing?"

He nodded.

"That was the official report."

"But I survived."

"Because someone wanted you to."

I looked back.

"Who?"

Daniel's silence answered before his words did.

"Michael."

I closed my eyes.

Everything became heavier.

My father had not abandoned me.

He had not simply disappeared.

He had been protecting me.

But protecting me from what?

The stranger stepped closer.

"There is something else you need to know."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Your father did not hide your identity because he was ashamed."

He paused.

"He hid it because your real identity made you a target."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He reached into his coat.

Removed a small envelope.

And placed it beside the black data drive.

My name was written on it.

But not my current name.

The old one.

The one used before I became Emma Carter.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is inside?"

His face became pale.

"The reason Black Horizon happened."

Nobody moved.

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, the academy alarm suddenly activated.

A loud siren echoed through the building.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Commander Reyes immediately looked toward the security monitors.

"Someone breached the archive room."

The stranger's expression changed.

"What?"

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

"What happened?"

A security camera appeared.

The academy's underground archive.

The place where classified records were stored.

The camera showed the empty hallway.

Then a person entered.

A person wearing a dark jacket.

Carrying a file.

The camera zoomed closer.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized the person.

Not from my past.

From today.

From the courtyard.

From the moment Ryan pointed the training pistol at me.

The person who had been watching everything.

The person connected to General Cole.

Ryan Cole.

But he was not alone.

Someone followed behind him.

Someone older.

Someone whose face appeared clearly on the monitor.

Commander Reyes whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

He stared at the screen.

His voice almost disappeared.

"That's the man who killed Black Horizon."

The archive door opened.

May you like

And the person inside turned toward the camera.

It was General Michael Carter.
