Chapter 6 - The Father Who Hid the Truth

The man on the security monitor stared directly into the camera.

Michael Carter.

Alive.

After three years of silence.

After three years of people believing he had vanished.

After three years of me accepting that I would never hear his voice again.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound inside the archive hallway was the emergency alarm repeating over and over.

Commander Reyes looked like he had seen a ghost.

Daniel looked like he had expected this moment.

And I?

I felt like I was watching my entire life collapse and rebuild itself at the same time.

"That's impossible."

The words left my mouth quietly.

Daniel turned toward me.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"That can't be him."

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me how to survive.

The man who disappeared without saying goodbye.

My father.

Michael Carter.

The screen flickered.

Then the security feed changed.

A different camera angle appeared.

The underground archive room.

Michael was standing beside the classified files.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Just standing there.

Like he wanted to be found.

Like he knew we were watching.

Commander Reyes stepped closer to the monitor.

"Why would he come here?"

The stranger who had entered earlier remained silent.

I looked at him.

"You knew."

He did not deny it.

"You knew he was alive."

His eyes met mine.

"Yes."

Anger rose inside me.

Not explosive.

Not loud.

The kind that was worse.

The kind that came from years of unanswered questions.

"Everyone knew something except me."

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

I had spent years believing I was moving forward.

But everyone around me had been guarding a door.

And now that door was open.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Emma."

I raised my hand.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Because he understood.

I was not angry at him alone.

I was angry at every person who decided my truth belonged to them.

The monitor changed again.

Michael was now opening a metal case inside the archive room.

Inside was another black drive.

Similar to the one Daniel brought.

Except this one had a label.

BLACK HORIZON — ORIGINAL.

My heart tightened.

"That drive contains everything," Daniel said.

I looked at him.

"Everything about what happened?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't anyone show me?"

Daniel looked away.

That answer hurt more than anything.

Because it meant there was a reason.

A reason they thought was bigger than my right to know.

The stranger finally spoke.

"Because if you knew the truth too early, you would have gone after them."

I looked at him.

"And?"

His expression became serious.

"And you would have died."

The hallway became silent.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him he was wrong.

That I could handle the truth.

That I was not the same person who needed protection.

But a small part of me knew something.

They were not protecting me because they thought I was weak.

They were protecting me because they knew exactly what I was capable of.

The screen suddenly went black.

The security feed disappeared.

The alarm stopped.

Every light in the academy turned off.

Darkness surrounded us.

Commander Reyes immediately reached for his radio.

"Security, report."

Static.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Daniel looked toward the archive entrance.

"Someone cut the internal network."

The stranger moved toward the door.

"We need to leave."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

He looked back.

"Because whoever is controlling this building knows we are here."

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone walking toward us.

Commander Reyes raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

The footsteps continued.

Closer.

Closer.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"Emma."

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from the screen.

Not from a file.

From my childhood.

From memories I had buried.

The lights suddenly returned.

A man stood at the end of the hallway.

Michael Carter.

In person.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But real.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then I walked forward.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed to know.

"Why?"

That was the only word I could say.

Michael looked at me.

And for the first time in years, I saw him not as a general.

Not as a commander.

As my father.

"I wanted to tell you."

My eyes burned.

"But you didn't."

"I couldn't."

"You couldn't?"

My voice became stronger.

"You watched me believe you were gone."

His expression broke slightly.

"I watched you survive."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Michael took a breath.

"Your last mission was never supposed to be a rescue operation."

Daniel moved closer.

"We know."

Michael looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You know part of it."

The room went silent.

Michael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

With my name written across the front.

My hands became cold.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

Mine.

"What is that?"

Michael looked at the envelope.

"The last thing you wrote before Black Horizon."

I frowned.

"I never wrote that."

Michael looked at me.

"You did."

"No."

"You wrote it after you discovered who was inside our organization."

My breathing slowed.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Michael looked toward the stranger.

The stranger lowered his head.

Like he already knew what was coming.

Then Michael said:

"The person who betrayed Black Horizon was not General Cole."

I looked at him.

"Then who?"

Michael walked closer.

His voice became quieter.

"The person who betrayed your team was someone you trusted more than anyone."

My mind raced.

Daniel.

Commander Reyes.

The stranger.

Every possibility felt impossible.

Michael handed me the envelope.

"Open it."

I took it.

My fingers touched the seal.

But before I could open it, a gunshot echoed from somewhere inside the academy.

Everyone turned.

Not panic.

Training.

Instinct.

Michael immediately moved toward me.

Daniel covered the hallway.

Commander Reyes reached for his radio.

Then every screen in the building turned on again.

A new video appeared.

Not Michael.

Not anyone we knew.

A young man sitting in a dark room.

His face partially hidden.

But his voice was clear.

"Emma Carter."

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

The voice belonged to someone who had been beside me.

Someone who had smiled at me.

Someone who had pretended to be on my side.

The man on the screen leaned forward.

And whispered:

"You finally found your father."

A pause.

Then:

"Now ask him why he ordered me to kill you."

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A photograph of me.

Taken during Black Horizon.

And written across the bottom were three words.

MISSION TARGET: EMMA.

Michael stepped back.

For the first time since I saw him alive...

he looked afraid.

May you like

Then the archive door behind us slowly unlocked from the inside.

Someone was already waiting there.
