Chapter 9 - The Truth That Finally Set The Moretti Family Free

For eight years, everyone believed Daniel Russo was dead.

There had been no funeral.

No body.

No grave.

Just a disappearance.

In the Moretti family, people disappearing was not unusual.

Sometimes they left because they were afraid.

Sometimes because they were betrayed.

Sometimes because they knew something they were never supposed to know.

But Daniel Russo was different.

He wasn't just an employee.

He wasn't just a business associate.

He was my father's closest friend.

The one person my father trusted when he trusted almost nobody.

And now he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

With the eyes of a man who had spent years running from something.

The secret room became completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was trying to understand the impossible.

Thomas looked like he had seen a ghost.

Marco looked suspicious.

And I…

I couldn't decide whether I wanted answers from Daniel.

Or whether I wanted to know why my sister had written a warning about me.

I tightened my grip around Alessandra's letter.

“Daniel Russo.”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“You were dead.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“No.”

A pause.

“I wanted people to believe I was.”

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

I stepped closer.

“Why?”

Daniel looked around the room.

At the photographs.

The hidden walls.

The place my sister had chosen to hide the truth.

“Because whoever killed Alessandra was looking for me too.”

The words hit everyone.

Marco stepped forward.

“You knew?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I knew enough.”

Marco's face changed.

“You knew she was in danger?”

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

“You knew.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

My anger rose.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another person who knew my sister was walking toward death.

“And you did nothing?”

Daniel looked at me.

“I tried.”

“Try harder.”

My voice echoed.

“My sister died.”

Silence.

“My family lied to me.”

Another step.

“And everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me.”

I looked around the room.

“Everyone says they were afraid.”

I looked back at Daniel.

“But my sister is still dead.”

Daniel accepted the anger.

He didn't defend himself.

That made it worse.

“I deserve that.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You deserve answers.”

For a moment, Daniel looked relieved.

Then he nodded.

“Fair enough.”

He walked deeper into the room.

His eyes moved toward the letter in my hand.

“You found her message.”

“Yes.”

“Then you already know some of it.”

“Not enough.”

Daniel looked at Marco.

Then Thomas.

Then me.

“The night Alessandra died, she discovered something your father had hidden for years.”

“What?”

“A second company.”

I frowned.

“My father owned multiple companies.”

“Not this one.”

Daniel moved toward an old bookshelf.

Behind a row of dusty books was another hidden compartment.

He touched the wall.

“Your father created a private account system.”

“For what?”

“To protect the family.”

I stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does when you understand who he was protecting you from.”

The room became colder.

“Who?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Your grandfather.”

Nobody spoke.

Because that name carried weight.

My grandfather.

The man who built the Moretti empire.

The man whose portrait hung in every important room of the mansion.

A man everyone described as a genius.

A man everyone respected.

Daniel continued.

“Your grandfather built this family on fear.”

“That is not a secret.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“But what he did after building it is.”

He opened the hidden compartment.

Inside was another envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My heart sank.

Another secret.

Another message.

Daniel handed it to me.

“Your sister found this.”

I opened it carefully.

Inside were copies of documents.

Old contracts.

Bank transfers.

Names.

Dates.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Hale.

I looked up.

“Victor?”

Daniel nodded.

“He was involved.”

My expression hardened.

“But he wasn't the one controlling everything.”

I stared at the papers.

“Then who was?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the letter I held.

“The warning she wrote.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You know about that?”

“Yes.”

“What does it mean?”

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time…

he looked afraid.

“She wasn't warning you about yourself.”

I frowned.

“Then why write ‘Don't trust Luca’?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Because she knew someone would alter the message.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She knew if anyone found that letter, they would try to make you believe you were the enemy.”

I looked down.

The handwriting.

The ink.

The final message.

Could it have been fake?

“Who changed it?”

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“The same person who killed her.”

Nobody moved.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the door.

Like he was afraid someone might hear.

Then he whispered:

“Your uncle.”

I froze.

“My uncle died twenty years ago.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

He looked at me.

“Your uncle didn't die.”

The room went silent.

Again.

It felt like every secret in my family was buried under another secret.

“That's impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That's what everyone was supposed to believe.”

Marco looked confused.

“You're saying my uncle is alive?”

“Yes.”

“And he killed Alessandra?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I didn't say that.”

That answer bothered me.

“Then say what you know.”

Daniel looked at me.

“I know the person responsible for Alessandra's death wanted two things.”

“What?”

“The company.”

A pause.

“And you.”

I frowned.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the photographs covering the walls.

“Because your father didn't choose you as his heir because you were his oldest son.”

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“What are you talking about?”

“He chose you because you were the only person in the family who didn't know the truth.”

The room went completely silent.

I looked at everyone.

Marco.

Thomas.

Daniel.

“What truth?”

Daniel's voice became softer.

“The Moretti empire wasn't supposed to belong to you.”

A pause.

“It was supposed to belong to Alessandra.”

My breathing stopped.

“What?”

“Your father believed she was the only one who could end the cycle.”

I stared.

“My sister?”

Daniel nodded.

“She was supposed to expose everything.”

“And me?”

“You were supposed to protect her.”

The words hurt.

Because suddenly everything connected.

Alessandra wasn't just investigating.

She wasn't just looking for criminals.

She was trying to save the family.

And I had been too blind to see it.

Daniel looked at me.

“Luca…”

I didn't answer.

“Your sister left one final recording.”

My eyes lifted.

“What?”

“The real one.”

The original tape.

The one everyone had been searching for.

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“Under this room.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“The north wing was never abandoned.”

He pointed downward.

“There is another level beneath the mansion.”

Thomas stepped back.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

His face was filled with fear.

“You knew?”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

I stared.

“How many secrets are under my house?”

Thomas whispered:

“More than anyone should ever know.”

Then suddenly…

a loud sound came from above us.

A door slamming.

Footsteps.

Someone was moving through the north wing.

Someone who had followed us.

Daniel immediately turned off the flashlight.

“Everyone quiet.”

The room went dark.

I heard footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Controlled.

Not someone searching.

Someone who knew exactly where they were going.

Then a voice came from outside the secret room.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that made my blood turn cold.

“Luca.”

Everyone froze.

Because the person standing outside wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't an enemy.

It was someone who had been with me all night.

Someone who had helped me find the truth.

Someone I thought I could trust.

The voice said:

“Open the door.”

And Daniel whispered:

“Don't.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

His answer came quietly.

“Because the person outside…”

May you like

A pause.

“Is the person Alessandra was trying to escape from.”
