Chapter 8 - The Final Recording Of Alessandra Moretti

The north wing had been abandoned for eleven years.
Nobody went there.
Nobody cleaned it.
Nobody mentioned it.
In the Moretti family, there were places that existed physically but disappeared emotionally.
The north wing was one of them.
My grandfather had sealed it after his death, claiming the old section of the mansion was unsafe.
At the time, nobody questioned him.
In my family, people learned early that some doors were not meant to be opened.
But now I was standing in front of that door.
Holding the key my sister had hidden for eight years.
And suddenly I wondered…
How many secrets had been waiting behind it all this time?
The hallway leading to the north wing was colder than the rest of the mansion.
The lights flickered above us.
Dust covered the floor.
The portraits on the walls looked different here.
The smiling faces of my ancestors had disappeared.
Only serious expressions remained.
As if even the people in the paintings knew something was wrong.
Behind me walked Marco.
For once, he wasn't speaking.
That alone told me how serious this was.
Victor was in the hospital under guard.
Elena stayed with Sophie.
Thomas followed us because he was the only person who knew the old parts of the mansion.
And I carried the key.
The small silver key.
The last thing my sister left behind.
I stopped in front of the door.
The lock was old.
Almost forgotten.
I inserted the key.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then…
Click.
The sound echoed through the hallway.
Everyone froze.
Because that sound didn't just open a door.
It opened eight years of lies.
I pushed.
The door slowly moved.
Inside was darkness.
Not the darkness of an empty room.
The darkness of a place that had been waiting.
Thomas turned on his flashlight.
The beam moved across the room.
Old furniture.
Covered paintings.
Shelves filled with boxes.
A fireplace that hadn't been used in years.
Nothing seemed unusual.
Until I noticed the wall.
There were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
My family.
My father.
My grandfather.
My sister.
Me.
But these weren't the official family photographs displayed throughout the mansion.
These were private.
Personal.
Moments nobody outside the family had seen.
I walked closer.
Then I saw something.
A photograph of Alessandra.
She was standing beside the north wing door.
The same door.
Holding the same key.
On the back of the photograph was handwriting.
My sister's handwriting.
"If Luca finds this room, it means they failed to stop him."
My chest tightened.
I turned the photograph over.
There was more.
"Luca, if you are reading this, please understand one thing."
A pause.
"I never stopped trusting you."
I closed my eyes.
For eight years, I had carried guilt.
I thought maybe she had tried to reach me.
Maybe she had expected me to discover something.
But part of me always wondered…
Maybe she had given up.
Maybe she thought I wasn't strong enough.
Now I knew.
She never lost faith in me.
Someone else had taken that choice away.
Marco stepped closer.
“What else does it say?”
I looked at him.
For a moment, I considered hiding it.
But no.
The time for secrets was over.
I read aloud.
"The person who betrayed us will try to convince you that they were protecting you."
Everyone became silent.
I continued.
"They will say they made difficult choices. They will say they had no other option."
My hand tightened around the photograph.
"Don't believe them."
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Marco looked away.
I turned the photograph.
There was another sentence.
Short.
Simple.
But it changed everything.
"The person who hurt me is not the person who scares me most."
I stared at the words.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas pointed.
“Sir.”
Behind the photographs was something hidden.
A small metal box.
Attached to the wall.
I removed the pictures carefully.
The box was old.
Locked.
But beside it was another keyhole.
I looked at the silver key.
The same one.
I inserted it.
Click.
Inside was a small envelope.
No tape.
No documents.
Just a letter.
My hands shook before I opened it.
Because I knew.
I knew it was from her.
My sister.
The person I had spent eight years trying to forget because remembering hurt too much.
I unfolded the paper.
And there it was.
Her handwriting.
Luca,
If you found this, then I know you already saw the first recording.
I'm sorry.
I wish I could have told you everything myself.
But I learned something too late.
The Moretti family was never destroyed by enemies outside our home.
It was destroyed by the secrets we kept inside it.
I stopped reading.
My eyes moved toward Marco.
He looked at me.
But I continued.
You believe the person responsible wants money.
They don't.
Money was only the tool.
The real goal was control.
They wanted you isolated.
They wanted everyone who loved you gone.
Because a man with no one left is easier to control.
My breathing became heavier.
Because that was the truth I had refused to see.
Over the years, people had disappeared from my life.
Friends.
Partners.
Family members.
One by one.
And every time, I thought it was coincidence.
But Alessandra had seen the pattern.
She knew.
I continued.
Luca, there is something you must know about the night I died.
I was not alone.
I met someone.
Someone who tried to warn me.
Someone who knew the truth before I did.
I stopped.
Someone warned her?
Who?
The next sentence answered.
His name is Daniel Russo.
Marco immediately looked up.
Thomas went pale.
I noticed.
“Who is Daniel Russo?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at Thomas.
“Do you know that name?”
His face changed.
Slowly.
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Thomas swallowed.
“He was your father's closest friend.”
“And?”
“He disappeared the same year your sister died.”
I looked back at the letter.
A missing man.
A hidden tape.
A secret room.
A murdered sister.
The pieces were connecting.
But not enough.
I kept reading.
Daniel knows what happened.
He knows why Father built this mansion the way he did.
He knows why the north wing was sealed.
And he knows who ordered my death.
My heart stopped.
Because the answer was finally close.
After eight years.
After all the lies.
After all the pain.
The name of my sister's killer was almost in my hands.
Then I reached the final lines.
But Luca, please remember this.
The person who appears guilty may not be the person who betrayed us.
Sometimes the person protecting you is the person who looks like your enemy.
I lowered the letter.
Confused.
Because it sounded like a warning.
Not against Marco.
Not against Victor.
Against someone else.
Someone closer.
Then I noticed something at the bottom of the page.
A final message.
Written differently.
Not with a pen.
With a different color.
Almost like Alessandra added it at the last second.
Three words.
Three words that made my blood run cold.
"Don't trust Luca."
I stared.
My own name.
My sister wrote:
Don't trust Luca.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Because there were only two possibilities.
Either someone had changed the letter.
Or…
Alessandra had discovered something about me.
Something I didn't know.
Marco stepped forward.
“What does it say?”
I folded the letter.
I didn't answer.
Because for the first time since finding the tape…
I wasn't sure who the enemy was.
Not Victor.
Not Marco.
Not the stranger who shot him.
Maybe the biggest secret wasn't about who betrayed my sister.
Maybe it was about why Alessandra no longer trusted her own brother.
Then suddenly…
a noise came from behind the wall.
A soft movement.
Everyone turned.
Thomas raised his flashlight.
“There is someone in here.”
The wall panel moved slightly.
A hidden door opened.
And from inside the secret passage…
someone stepped forward.
Someone none of us expected to see.
Someone who had been declared dead eight years ago.
Someone who looked exactly like the person my sister mentioned.
Daniel Russo.
Alive.
And his first words were:
“Luca Moretti…”
He looked at me.
“Your sister died trying to protect you.”
A pause.
Then:
“But she was wrong about one thing.”
May you like
The entire room froze.
“She should have protected herself from you.”
