Chapter 7 - The Man Who Returned From The Dead

The sound of the gunshot stayed in my head long after the room became silent.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody understood what had happened.

One second, Victor Hale was standing in front of me, preparing to reveal the biggest secret of my family's history.

The next…

he was lying on the floor.

Bleeding.

Dying.

I had seen men collapse before.

I had watched enemies fall.

I had attended funerals of people whose names appeared in newspapers the next morning.

But this was different.

Because Victor wasn't my enemy.

Not yet.

He was a man who had spent fourteen years beside me.

A man who knew my schedule.

My weaknesses.

My family.

And perhaps…

the truth about my sister.

“Call an ambulance!”

My voice exploded through the room.

The guards immediately moved.

Two rushed toward Victor.

Another group ran after the shooter.

But I already knew they wouldn't find him.

The person who fired that shot wasn't running from my security.

He was running from the truth.

And he knew exactly how to disappear.

I looked toward the broken window.

Rain poured inside.

The storm swallowed every sound.

Whoever he was…

he had planned this.

Every second.

Every movement.

Every escape route.

I walked toward Victor.

He was conscious.

Barely.

His hand pressed against his wound.

His face was pale.

But his eyes were still focused.

Still afraid.

“Luca…”

“Don't talk.”

I knelt beside him.

“Save your strength.”

His lips moved slightly.

“No…”

His breathing became harder.

“You need to know.”

I looked around.

The room was filled with people.

Guards.

Family.

Employees.

Everyone waiting.

Everyone wanting answers.

I leaned closer.

“Who was that?”

Victor closed his eyes.

For a moment, I thought he had passed out.

Then he whispered:

“Not who…”

A painful breath.

“What?”

His eyes opened.

“The question is…”

He coughed.

“Why did he wait eight years?”

The words sent a chill through me.

Because he was right.

If someone wanted the truth destroyed…

why wait?

Why allow the tape to survive?

Why allow Elena to keep the secret?

Why allow me to discover it?

Unless…

they weren't afraid of the tape.

They were afraid of what came after it.

I grabbed Victor's shoulder.

“Tell me.”

His eyes moved toward Marco.

Then back to me.

“Your sister…”

A pause.

“She knew someone would come for the evidence.”

I frowned.

“What evidence?”

“The original files.”

My mind returned to the empty drawer.

The missing documents.

The stolen inheritance papers.

The connection appeared slowly.

The tape.

The documents.

The money.

The accident.

They were all connected.

Victor continued.

“Alessandra didn't just record a confession.”

He swallowed.

“She recorded proof.”

“Proof of what?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“That the person controlling everything…”

Another breath.

“Was never trying to steal your company.”

I stared at him.

“Then what were they trying to do?”

Victor looked at me.

“They were trying to destroy your family.”

Before I could ask another question, the paramedics arrived.

They rushed Victor away.

But not before he grabbed my hand.

His fingers were weak.

“Luca.”

I looked down.

“Find the second tape.”

I froze.

“The original?”

He nodded.

“It shows everything.”

Then he whispered:

“Everything your sister discovered.”

After Victor was taken away, nobody spoke.

The archive room felt different.

Like the walls themselves had witnessed too much.

I stood in the middle of the destroyed room.

Surrounded by pieces of my family's past.

Photographs.

Documents.

Memories.

Lies.

Marco remained near the door.

I looked at him.

“You knew Victor was involved.”

He didn't deny it.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised me.

“Explain.”

Marco sighed.

“For years, I thought Victor was the enemy.”

“Why?”

“Because Alessandra suspected him.”

I stared.

“Then why did you try to stop Elena from giving me the tape?”

His face changed.

Because that was the question he couldn't escape.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“The truth.”

I stepped closer.

“You're going to have to do better than that.”

Marco looked at the old photographs on the wall.

“When Alessandra died, I knew something was wrong.”

“Because?”

“Because I saw her car.”

I waited.

“And?”

He looked at me.

“The damage didn't match an accident.”

My blood ran cold.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew my sister was murdered?”

His voice broke.

“I suspected.”

I grabbed his collar.

“You suspected?”

My anger finally exploded.

“You stood beside me at her funeral!”

“I know!”

His shout echoed.

For the first time in years, Marco looked broken.

“I know what I did.”

The room went silent.

He lowered his voice.

“I was afraid, Luca.”

“Afraid of who?”

He looked toward the hallway.

Toward the mansion.

Toward the place where generations of Morettis had lived.

Then he said:

“Your father.”

I released him.

“What?”

Marco looked at me.

“Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.”

I stared.

“My father died before Alessandra.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you saying?”

Marco swallowed.

“I am saying your father left behind secrets.”

He walked toward the destroyed cabinet.

“The documents they stole tonight…”

He touched the empty drawer.

“They weren't just business papers.”

“What were they?”

Marco looked at me.

“They were proof that your father discovered the same thing Alessandra discovered.”

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“And what was that?”

Marco whispered:

“The Moretti empire was built on a lie.”

Nobody spoke.

Because those words were impossible.

My entire life.

My family's reputation.

Everything I inherited.

Everything I protected.

A lie?

No.

I refused to believe it.

But eight years ago, I refused to believe Alessandra was murdered.

And I was wrong.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed space.

But before I reached the door, I heard a small voice.

“Mr. Moretti?”

I turned.

Sophie stood there.

Elena beside her.

She shouldn't have been there.

She shouldn't have heard any of this.

But she had.

“What is it, Sophie?”

She held something in her hand.

Something small.

Something old.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

A tiny silver key.

Where did a four-year-old girl get a key?

I looked at Elena.

She looked confused.

“I don't know where she found that.”

Sophie looked at me.

“Mommy said Aunt Alessandra gave this to me.”

The entire room froze.

“What?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said if anything happened…”

Her little fingers closed around the key.

“I had to give it to you when you found the tape.”

My breathing stopped.

Alessandra.

She had planned this.

Not just the tape.

Everything.

The key.

The message.

The timing.

She knew.

She knew she might not survive.

And she trusted a four-year-old child to carry the last piece of the truth.

I slowly took the key.

On it was engraved a single word:

NORTH.

I looked toward Thomas.

His face changed immediately.

“No…”

I turned.

“What?”

He looked terrified.

“That key…”

He whispered.

“It opens the old north wing.”

The abandoned part of the mansion.

The part nobody entered.

The part sealed after my grandfather died.

The part everyone believed was empty.

I stared at the key.

And suddenly I understood.

The second tape wasn't hidden in the wall.

It wasn't hidden in the archive.

It was somewhere much closer.

Somewhere inside my own home.

A place my sister knew nobody would search.

Because nobody believed she had hidden something there.

But she had.

The question was…

May you like

what would we find in the north wing?

And why had Alessandra chosen a place connected to the darkest part of our family's history?
