Chapter 6 - Charles Mercer’s Last Warning

Eleanor opened the envelope at the kitchen table.

Her brothers stood nearby.

Margaret Sloan sat across from her.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A notarized letter.

And a handwritten note.

Eleanor read the note first.

Eleanor—

If you are reading this, Adrian has gone further than I hoped he would.

Do not confuse charm with character.

Do not confuse marriage with ownership.

And do not let shame keep you from the people who loved you before he taught you to doubt them.

I should have acted sooner.

For that, I am sorry.

—Charles

Eleanor had to stop.

Her eyes blurred.

Margaret reached across the table.

“He cared about you.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“Not enough to confront Adrian early.”

Margaret's voice was bitter.

“None of us did.”

Nathan inserted the flash drive into his laptop.

It contained recordings.

Audio.

Financial documents.

Scanned emails.

Charles had built a case.

For months.

The first recording began with Adrian's voice.

“You're old. You don't understand where the company needs to go.”

Charles answered.

“I understand theft.”

Eleanor's skin prickled.

Adrian laughed.

“Don't use words you can't prove.”

“I can prove forty-eight million moved through entities controlled by Vanessa Cole's brother.”

Eleanor looked up.

Vanessa.

Margaret nodded.

“Keep listening.”

The recording continued.

Adrian:

“You gave Eleanor too much power.”

Charles:

“I gave her enough power to stop you.”

Adrian:

“She'll sign.”

Charles:

“No, she won't.”

Adrian:

“She always does what I need eventually.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then Charles said:

“And what happens when she doesn't?”

A pause.

Adrian answered:

“Then I prove she's incapable.”

Lucas whispered, “There it is.”

The recording was dated three weeks earlier.

Before the gala.

Before the guardianship filing.

Before Eleanor knew any of this.

Adrian had planned both options.

Voluntary signature.

Or legal incapacity.

Nathan copied the files immediately.

Margaret handed Eleanor the notarized letter.

Charles had declared that he considered Eleanor mentally competent, informed, and fully capable of exercising her corporate and trust rights.

He specifically warned that any attempt by Adrian to obtain guardianship should be viewed as a hostile effort to seize voting control.

Eleanor stared.

“He knew.”

Margaret nodded.

“He knew Adrian would try.”

“Why didn't he stop him?”

“He was preparing to.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

Eleanor looked up.

“Charles planned to call an emergency board meeting at nine.”

The clock read 8:14.

Forty-six minutes.

Margaret continued.

“He intended to suspend Adrian pending forensic audit.”

Eleanor felt cold.

“And Adrian knew?”

“I believe so.”

Nathan asked, “How?”

Margaret looked at the flash drive.

“One recording was made yesterday.”

They opened it.

Charles and Adrian.

Raised voices.

Charles:

“Tomorrow morning, you're finished.”

Adrian:

“You don't have the votes.”

Charles:

“I have Eleanor.”

Adrian laughed.

“You haven't spoken to Eleanor in months.”

“I won't need to.”

A pause.

Then Charles said:

“Nathan Bennett has everything.”

Eleanor looked at Nathan.

So did everyone.

Nathan's face went pale.

Adrian had known.

He knew Nathan had the files.

He knew Eleanor's brothers were involved.

That meant their arrival at the gala hadn't surprised him entirely.

Maybe only the timing had.

The recording ended with Adrian saying:

“You always did choose outsiders over your own son.”

Charles replied:

“No. I chose the person you couldn't control.”

Eleanor swallowed hard.

At 9:00 a.m., the Mercer Holdings board meeting began without Adrian.

By 9:04, everyone knew Charles was dead.

By 9:07, Adrian arrived with two attorneys.

By 9:10, Eleanor entered with Nathan, Lucas, Caleb, Margaret, and Martin Vale.

Every face turned.

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Eleanor sat in Charles's chair.

“I own voting shares.”

“You're under guardianship review.”

“The court hasn't granted anything.”

“Yet.”

Eleanor placed Charles's notarized letter on the table.

Then the recording transcript.

Then financial summaries.

Adrian's lawyers stopped smiling.

The board's senior independent director, Helen Cross, adjusted her glasses.

“What is all this?”

Eleanor answered.

“Evidence that Adrian attempted to obtain my voting rights through deception while moving forty-eight million dollars through undisclosed entities.”

Adrian laughed.

“This is absurd.”

Helen looked at him.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“Then you won't object to an independent forensic audit.”

Silence.

Eleanor watched him.

Adrian smiled.

“Of course not.”

Too easy.

Lucas noticed too.

Helen continued.

“Pending review, we need to discuss interim leadership.”

Adrian leaned back.

“You can't remove me.”

Margaret said, “Charles intended to.”

Adrian looked at her.

“My father is dead.”

“And he left instructions.”

Adrian's expression changed.

Margaret placed a sealed board directive on the table.

Dated yesterday.

Signed by Charles.

If credible evidence existed of unauthorized fund transfers, Adrian was to be suspended pending investigation.

The board voted.

Seven in favor.

Two against.

One abstention.

Adrian Mercer was suspended as CEO.

For the first time since Eleanor met him, Adrian looked afraid.

Not devastated.

Not angry.

Afraid.

He stood.

“This isn't over.”

Eleanor met his eyes.

“No.”

“You think they won?”

“I think you lost control.”

He leaned toward her.

“You have no idea what's coming.”

Caleb stood behind Eleanor.

Nathan beside him.

Adrian straightened and left.

By noon, the court hearing on guardianship began.

Adrian's attorney portrayed Eleanor as fragile.

Estranged from family.

Pregnant.

Emotionally distressed.

Recently humiliated.

The irony was almost obscene.

Then Eleanor's attorney played Charles's recording.

“She'll sign.”

“No, she won't.”

“Then I prove she's incapable.”

The judge's expression hardened.

Adrian stopped taking notes.

The emergency guardianship petition was denied.

More than denied.

The judge referred the filing for review as possible abuse of process.

Eleanor walked out of court legally independent.

Reporters waited outside.

She said only one sentence.

“I am not unstable because I refused to be controlled.”

The clip spread before she reached the car.

By evening, Mercer Holdings stock had dropped nine percent.

News outlets reported the audit.

Adrian's suspension.

Charles's suspicious death.

The affair leaked.

So did photographs from the gala.

Eleanor hated seeing herself on screen.

One hand over her belly.

Alone.

Humiliated.

Then other photographs appeared.

Her brothers entering.

Nathan's hand on her shoulder.

Caleb standing between her and Adrian.

Lucas carrying the evidence.

The story changed.

Not wife humiliated at gala.

Woman walks away.

Pregnant shareholder stops corporate takeover.

Estranged brothers return after seven years.

Eleanor wanted none of the attention.

But for the first time, public attention worked in her favor.

That evening, she stayed at the old family house.

Vanessa came too.

Temporarily.

Nathan wasn't happy about it.

Neither was Caleb.

But Vanessa was cooperating with investigators.

She had evidence.

Texts.

Emails.

Financial instructions.

Adrian had used her.

She had helped him hurt Eleanor.

Both could be true.

At 10:30 p.m., Vanessa sat across from Eleanor in the kitchen.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I thought he loved me.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“So did I.”

That was the only kindness she offered.

At 11:12, Detective Foster called.

Toxicology was complete.

Charles died from cardiac arrest.

But the sedative in his system likely contributed.

Fingerprints on the wine bottle:

Charles.

Adrian.

Vanessa.

Vanessa went pale.

“I never touched that bottle after I gave it to Adrian.”

Detective Foster asked her to come in.

Nathan drove.

Eleanor stayed home.

At midnight, she couldn't sleep.

She went into the nursery her brothers had made.

The crib stood beneath the window.

She placed one hand on the rail.

Her daughter moved.

Eleanor whispered, “We're going to be okay.”

For the first time, she believed it.

Then her phone rang.

Detective Foster.

Eleanor answered.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“We arrested someone.”

Her heart stopped.

“Adrian?”

“No.”

Eleanor stared at the dark window.

“Who?”

May you like

The detective hesitated.

“Vanessa Cole.”
