Chapter 2 - The Signature He Needed

The darkness lasted six seconds.

It felt longer.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered.

Eleanor instinctively wrapped both arms around her belly.

“Eleanor.”

Nathan's voice.

Close.

Calm.

“I'm here.”

A hand touched her elbow.

Lucas.

“Don't move.”

Across the ballroom, phones lit up one by one.

Small rectangles of blue-white light floated through the darkness.

Security personnel began shouting instructions.

Then the chandeliers flickered back on.

The first thing Eleanor saw was Adrian.

He was no longer near her.

He stood beside Vanessa at the edge of the stage.

The anniversary speech card was gone.

Nathan noticed too.

“Where's the card?”

Adrian laughed.

“What card?”

“The one with 11:45 written on it.”

Adrian's expression didn't move.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

Eleanor stared.

He had heard.

Which meant Nathan knew.

“How do you know about 11:45?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Not here.”

“No. Here.”

Caleb scanned the room.

“Eleanor.”

“I've spent seven years being told not here, not now, not in front of people.”

Her voice shook.

“I want to know.”

Nathan exhaled.

Then he nodded toward the envelope.

“The bank in those photographs manages Mercer Family Trust assets.”

Eleanor frowned.

“I know.”

“What you don't know is that Adrian filed preliminary documents three weeks ago to restructure the trust.”

“What does that mean?”

Lucas answered.

“It means he wants control over assets that legally require your approval.”

Eleanor went still.

She owned twenty-six percent of Mercer Holdings.

Not because Adrian had gifted it to her.

Because when they married, Adrian's father, Charles Mercer, had insisted on protecting the company from future succession disputes.

Eleanor had been granted voting shares through a family trust.

Adrian had once called it symbolic.

Nathan continued.

“The restructuring becomes executable once you sign.”

Eleanor remembered the documents on the kitchen counter.

Her hands went numb.

“I didn't sign.”

Caleb looked toward Adrian.

“We know.”

Eleanor followed his gaze.

Vanessa whispered something into Adrian's ear.

He shook his head sharply.

Lucas said, “That's why tonight matters.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“What happens at 11:45?”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“A notary was scheduled to arrive.”

Her stomach dropped.

“To the gala?”

“To the private executive suite upstairs.”

Eleanor almost laughed because the alternative was crying.

“He thought I would sign legal papers tonight?”

“He thought you'd be upset.”

Nathan's words came carefully.

“Distracted.”

The cruelty of it landed slowly.

Humiliate her.

Make her emotional.

Get her alone.

Tell her signing papers would protect the baby.

She could hear Adrian's voice saying it.

For us.

For the family.

For the child.

The room tilted.

Lucas caught her arm.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“El.”

“No.”

She looked across the ballroom.

Adrian was watching her.

He knew they had told her.

She could see it.

He walked toward them again.

This time he brought two security guards.

“Gentlemen,” Adrian said, “this is a private event.”

Nathan smiled faintly.

“We're leaving.”

Adrian blinked.

Then Nathan added, “With Eleanor.”

“No.”

The word came too quickly.

Everyone nearby heard it.

Adrian corrected himself.

“My wife is pregnant. She's upset. She shouldn't be dragged into whatever revenge fantasy you three have been carrying.”

Caleb laughed once.

“Revenge?”

Adrian ignored him.

He looked at Eleanor.

“Come upstairs.”

“No.”

“We need to talk privately.”

“No.”

“You're making a scene.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You joked about my pregnancy in front of two hundred people while your mistress stood beside you.”

Vanessa stiffened.

“I am not—”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Be quiet.”

Vanessa did.

Adrian's face reddened.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Careful.”

“Don't threaten me in my hotel.”

Nathan glanced around.

“You don't own the Grand Marquette.”

Adrian smiled.

“My company has the controlling hospitality contract.”

Lucas said quietly, “Not anymore.”

Adrian turned.

That got him.

“What?”

Lucas said nothing else.

A board member near the stage had begun paying attention.

So had several investors.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“What did you do?”

Nathan answered.

“We read.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Contracts. filings. disclosures. loan covenants.”

Lucas smiled.

“Very boring things.”

Caleb added, “Until they aren't.”

Eleanor looked between them.

Her brothers had not come merely to rescue her.

They came prepared.

“How long have you known?”

Nathan's expression softened.

“About the affair? Two months.”

Eleanor's breath caught.

“You knew?”

“We suspected.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“We tried.”

Caleb looked away.

Lucas said, “We sent messages.”

Eleanor remembered unknown numbers.

Voicemails she deleted without listening.

Emails Adrian told her were phishing attempts.

One FedEx envelope that disappeared from the foyer before she opened it.

She looked at Adrian.

He looked away.

“You intercepted them.”

Adrian scoffed.

“Don't be ridiculous.”

“You intercepted my brothers.”

“You asked me to protect you from them.”

“I asked you to stop inviting them to events after Nathan insulted you.”

“You said they were harassing us.”

“They were.”

Nathan's expression darkened.

“We were trying to tell her you had a second apartment.”

Vanessa's face drained.

Eleanor looked at her.

Adrian snapped, “Enough.”

Nathan didn't stop.

“Twenty-ninth floor. Halston Tower. Unit 2904.”

Vanessa took a step back.

Eleanor saw it.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Interesting.

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

“You told him the lease was hidden.”

Vanessa stared.

“What?”

“Apparently not hidden enough.”

Adrian turned to her.

“Don't say anything.”

Something shifted.

Eleanor had assumed Vanessa and Adrian stood on the same side.

For the first time, she wasn't sure.

Nathan leaned toward Eleanor.

“We need to leave.”

Eleanor nodded.

Adrian blocked her path.

Nathan moved instantly.

So did Caleb.

Security tensed.

Eleanor raised her hand.

“Everyone stop.”

The authority in her voice surprised even her.

She looked at Adrian.

“Move.”

“You are my wife.”

“Yes.”

“You're carrying my child.”

“Yes.”

“You can't just leave.”

Eleanor's eyes burned.

“Watch me.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“If you walk out with them, don't come back.”

Nathan's shoulders tightened.

Eleanor looked at Adrian for a long time.

Seven years.

Seven years of dinners.

Holidays.

Vacations.

Arguments.

Apologies.

Promises.

Photographs.

A nursery nearly finished upstairs in their home.

A crib Adrian helped assemble.

A name they had almost chosen.

All of it compressed into one sentence.

Don't come back.

Eleanor took off her wedding ring.

The movement caught everyone's attention.

Adrian's face changed.

She placed the diamond ring on the cocktail table between them.

“Then I won't.”

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

Adrian stared at the ring.

For once, he had no answer.

Eleanor turned.

Nathan offered his arm.

She didn't take it.

Not because she rejected him.

Because she needed to walk under her own strength.

They moved toward the ballroom doors.

Behind them, whispers exploded.

Then Vanessa called out.

“Eleanor.”

Eleanor stopped.

Adrian snapped, “Vanessa.”

Vanessa ignored him.

Her face had changed completely.

No smirk.

No confidence.

She looked scared.

“There is something else.”

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

Vanessa pulled away.

Nathan turned.

Lucas stepped forward.

“What?”

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“The documents aren't only about the trust.”

Adrian's voice went low and dangerous.

“Stop.”

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“He told me you knew.”

“Knew what?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then a man in a dark suit appeared beside Adrian.

Eleanor recognized him.

Martin Vale.

Adrian's personal attorney.

He carried a black leather folder.

He looked at the clock.

11:42 p.m.

May you like

Then at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Mercer,” he said, “we need your signature before midnight.”
