Chapter 6 - The Last Lie

Claire folded the letter before anyone saw it.
Her heart hammered.
The name was:
ELEANOR VALE.
Her mother.
Claire entered the room.
Eleanor was adjusting Daniel's blanket.
A maternal gesture.
Tender.
Ordinary.
Claire suddenly saw menace in it.
"Mom."
Eleanor turned.
"Yes?"
"Come with me."
They walked into an empty consultation room.
Claire locked the door.
Then placed Richard's letter on the table.
Eleanor read it.
She didn't deny it.
Claire's stomach dropped.
"You killed him."
"No."
"Richard says you ordered it."
"I ordered him stopped."
"What's the difference?"
"A very important one."
Eleanor sat.
She explained that Richard planned to expose everything before evidence was secured.
Eleanor feared Robert would destroy records and kill witnesses.
She instructed a security team to detain Richard.
Robert intercepted the order.
He changed "detain" to "eliminate."
"So you started it."
"Yes."
Claire's voice broke.
"And then you let everyone believe he had a heart attack."
"I was ashamed."
"That isn't protection."
"No."
For once, Eleanor didn't defend herself.
"I have spent sixteen years calling cowardice sacrifice."
Claire stared at her.
Eleanor surrendered the original messages.
They proved Robert altered the order.
They also proved Eleanor had participated in illegal surveillance and obstruction.
"You'll go to prison."
"Probably."
"Why give me this?"
"Because you asked everyone to stop lying."
Claire cried.
Eleanor did too.
It wasn't reconciliation.
But it was truth.
And truth was finally enough to begin.
The following months were brutal.
Robert was indicted on conspiracy, fraud, money laundering, attempted murder, and homicide-related charges.
Eleanor accepted responsibility for her crimes.
Arthur testified.
Michael returned publicly from the dead.
Mercer Capital's board removed every executive connected to the network.
Daniel resigned as CEO.
Claire hadn't expected that.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because I spent years benefiting from a company I didn't understand."
"You weren't responsible for everything."
"No. But I don't want our child growing up watching me pretend responsibility only matters when you're guilty."
He moved into a small apartment downtown.
Claire stayed in their home.
They attended counseling separately before attending together.
Daniel never pressured her.
He sent no extravagant flowers.
No jewelry.
No grand gestures.
He showed up.
Doctor appointments.
Legal meetings.
Prenatal classes.
Every time.
At twenty-four weeks, Claire let him feel the baby kick.
Daniel's face lit up.
"Was that—"
"Yes."
The baby kicked again.
Daniel laughed.
Claire hadn't heard that laugh in months.
Something inside her softened.
Not healed.
Softened.
Vanessa left Mercer Capital and joined the federal investigation team as an outside forensic consultant.
Claire eventually met her for coffee.
"I'm sorry about the dance," Vanessa said.
Claire raised an eyebrow.
"You should be."
Vanessa smiled.
"Daniel was terrible at pretending."
"He looked convincing."
"He kept whispering, 'Claire is going to murder me.'"
Claire laughed despite herself.
"Smart man."
Vanessa became something unexpected.
A friend.
Margaret became more honest too.
She admitted every secret she had kept.
Michael slowly rebuilt his relationship with Daniel.
Arthur remained in witness protection until the trials ended.
Claire visited Eleanor twice.
Their relationship would never become what it had been.
But Claire stopped needing it to.
Then, seven months after the gala, Daniel asked Claire to meet him at the ballroom.
The same ballroom.
Claire almost refused.
She went.
It was empty.
No guests.
No champagne.
No Vanessa.
Daniel stood beneath the chandeliers.
Claire approached.
"If you arranged dancers, I'm leaving."
He smiled.
"No dancers."
"Good."
He handed her something.
Her gold clutch.
Claire frowned.
"I haven't seen this since that night."
"I know."
Inside was the ultrasound photograph.
The original.
See you in March, Daddy.
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I found it after the hospital."
Claire swallowed.
"I was going to give it to you."
"I know."
He didn't reach for her.
"I don't want the old marriage back."
Claire looked at him.
Daniel continued.
"It had too many secrets in it."
"What do you want?"
"If you'll let me, I'd like to build a new one."
Claire's heart hurt.
In a different way now.
Daniel removed something from his pocket.
Her wedding ring.
He didn't kneel.
He simply held it out.
"You don't have to put it on."
Claire stared.
"I won't ask again."
She reached toward it.
Then stopped.
Daniel's face remained calm.
Her phone vibrated.
Claire looked down.
A message from Michael.
CLAIRE. DON'T LEAVE THE BALLROOM.
Her blood turned cold.
Another message arrived.
I FOUND RICHARD'S FINAL RECORDING.
Daniel saw her expression.
"What?"
Claire showed him.
A third message appeared.
IT'S ABOUT YOUR BABY.
The ballroom doors behind them clicked.
Claire turned.
The handle slowly moved.
May you like
The door opened from the other side.
Someone was standing there.
