Chapter 1 - The Ring in Her Hand

Claire Mercer pulled off her wedding ring and whispered:
"Don't tell Daniel I'm pregnant."
Daniel's mother, Margaret, stared at the ring lying beside a folded ultrasound photograph in Claire's open gold purse.
A handwritten number was visible on the photograph's white edge:
"11:30 — 1704."
Margaret suddenly realized this wasn't only about another woman.
Claire closed the purse.
Her fingers were surprisingly steady.
That frightened her more than tears would have.
Across the Manhattan ballroom, Daniel Mercer still had his hand around Vanessa Cole's waist.
Vanessa was beautiful in the effortless way expensive people often appeared effortless. Her champagne-colored satin dress caught every chandelier above her. Long brown hair fell down her back. One arm rested around Daniel's neck.
Then she leaned toward his ear.
Claire couldn't hear what she said.
She didn't need to.
Daniel lowered his head toward her.
Their faces were inches apart.
Around them, the charity gala continued beneath crystal chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. Champagne moved through the room on silver trays. A jazz quartet played near the windows. Photographers waited beside the stage for the evening's final announcement.
It was supposed to have been one of the happiest nights of Claire's life.
Three hours earlier, she had stood in their bathroom holding a pregnancy test in one hand and laughing into the other.
Then she had gone to her doctor's appointment.
The ultrasound technician had turned the monitor toward her.
"There," she'd said softly. "That's your baby."
Claire had cried.
Not because she was frightened.
Because she had wanted this for so long.
Daniel had wanted it too.
At least, she had believed he had.
For almost two years, they had talked about children. They had argued over names they weren't even entitled to use yet. Daniel wanted a son named after his grandfather. Claire insisted that if they had a daughter, no one was naming her after anyone.
"She gets her own name," Claire had said.
Daniel had laughed and kissed her.
"Deal."
That memory felt obscene now.
Claire looked at him across the ballroom.
Vanessa's fingers were touching the back of his neck.
Daniel wasn't stopping her.
Margaret Mercer sat frozen beside Claire.
At sixty-three, Daniel's mother had spent decades learning how to hide emotion in public. She had survived boardrooms, funerals, scandals, and a thirty-seven-year marriage to a man who believed vulnerability was a defect.
But she couldn't hide this.
"Claire."
Claire looked down.
Margaret had closed her fingers around the wedding ring.
"Give it back."
"What?"
"My ring."
Margaret immediately extended her palm.
Claire didn't take it.
"Keep it."
"Claire, please."
"I'm not going to make a scene."
"That's not what I'm worried about."
Claire almost laughed.
"What are you worried about?"
Margaret glanced toward Daniel.
Vanessa was saying something again.
This time Daniel's expression changed.
He looked tense.
Margaret noticed it too.
"There's something happening tonight that you don't understand."
Claire's eyes hardened.
"I understand exactly what I'm looking at."
"No. You don't."
"Your son has another woman wrapped around him."
"I can see that."
"And you're going to tell me there's an innocent explanation?"
Margaret didn't answer.
That silence hurt more than a lie.
Claire picked up her gold clutch.
The ultrasound photograph inside suddenly felt impossibly heavy.
She had planned everything.
After Daniel's speech, she would take him onto the terrace overlooking the city. She would tell him she had one more donation for the Mercer Foundation.
Then she would hand him an envelope.
Inside would be the ultrasound.
On the back, Claire had written:
See you in March, Daddy.
She had imagined Daniel staring at it.
She had imagined the confusion disappearing from his face.
She had imagined him lifting her off the ground.
Instead, Claire was calculating how quickly she could pack a suitcase.
"Claire," Margaret said. "Wait."
"No."
"You can't leave yet."
Claire turned.
"Excuse me?"
Margaret's eyes went to the purse.
"Where did you get that ultrasound?"
For the first time, Claire's anger broke.
"What kind of question is that?"
"The clinic."
"Obviously."
"Which clinic?"
"Manhattan Women's Health."
Margaret went pale.
Claire noticed immediately.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You just turned white."
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not."
Margaret looked toward Daniel again.
Then toward Vanessa.
Then back at the purse.
"Did anyone touch that photograph?"
Claire stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
"At the clinic. Did anyone take it from you?"
"No."
"Did anyone write on it?"
Claire remembered the number.
She opened the clutch.
The ultrasound photograph lay inside.
She pulled it halfway out.
11:30 — 1704.
"I thought the technician wrote that."
Margaret's lips parted.
"Did she?"
"I don't know."
"Claire, put it away."
"Why?"
"Please."
The urgency in Margaret's voice was different now.
Claire slowly returned the photograph to her purse.
"What does 1704 mean?"
Margaret didn't answer.
"Margaret."
"I don't know."
"You do."
Before Margaret could respond, applause erupted.
Claire turned.
Daniel had stepped away from Vanessa.
For one desperate second, Claire wondered whether she had misunderstood everything.
Then Vanessa touched Daniel's hand.
Not casually.
Intimately.
Daniel looked down at her fingers.
He whispered something.
Vanessa nodded.
Claire felt the last fragile piece of hope inside her disappear.
Daniel walked toward the stage.
The gala chairman introduced him as the youngest CEO in Mercer Capital's history.
People applauded.
Daniel smiled.
Claire had seen that smile on magazine covers.
She had also seen it at two in the morning when he couldn't sleep.
That was the cruel part.
She knew this man.
Or she thought she did.
Daniel began his speech.
Claire heard almost none of it.
Her attention remained on Vanessa.
The brunette wasn't watching Daniel anymore.
She was watching Claire.
Their eyes met.
Vanessa's face changed.
Not triumph.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
Claire felt a chill.
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
Margaret subtly shook her head.
Claire saw it.
Every instinct inside her sharpened.
Vanessa immediately looked away.
"What was that?" Claire whispered.
Margaret remained silent.
"You know her."
"Claire—"
"You know Vanessa."
"Yes."
"How?"
Margaret lowered her voice.
"This isn't the place."
Claire leaned closer.
"You have approximately ten seconds before I walk onto that stage and ask your son myself."
Margaret's composure finally cracked.
"Vanessa used to work for Richard."
Claire stopped.
Richard Mercer.
Daniel's father.
He had died eleven months earlier.
Officially, a heart attack.
Claire had attended the funeral beside Daniel.
She remembered Margaret standing beside the grave without shedding a tear until everyone else had gone.
"What did she do for him?"
"Financial compliance."
"Daniel told me she was an investor."
"That's what people here believe."
"Why?"
Margaret looked toward the stage.
Daniel was finishing his speech.
"Because Richard discovered something before he died."
"What?"
Applause swallowed Margaret's response.
Daniel stepped down from the stage.
People immediately surrounded him.
Claire watched Vanessa disappear through a side door.
Margaret stood.
"We need to go."
Claire didn't move.
"Go where?"
"Somewhere private."
"Why?"
Margaret leaned close.
"Because Vanessa wasn't whispering about an affair."
Claire stared at her.
"Then what was she whispering?"
"I don't know."
"You were watching them."
"Because I knew she might come."
Claire's anger returned.
"You knew?"
"Not tonight."
"That's not an answer."
"No. It isn't."
Daniel finally saw Claire.
Their eyes met across the ballroom.
His smile vanished.
His gaze dropped toward her left hand.
The ring was gone.
Daniel immediately began walking toward her.
Claire's heart pounded.
Margaret grabbed her wrist.
"Don't tell him about the baby."
Claire looked at her.
"What?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because if Richard was right, Daniel isn't the person we should be afraid for."
Claire pulled free.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
Daniel was twenty feet away.
Fifteen.
"Claire?"
She looked at him.
He stopped when he saw her expression.
"What happened?"
Claire glanced toward the side door Vanessa had used.
"Enjoy your dance?"
Daniel's face tightened.
"It's not what you think."
"Of course."
"Claire, listen to me."
"Was she in your arms?"
"Yes."
"Was your hand on her waist?"
"Yes, but—"
"Did she whisper in your ear?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"She was warning me."
Claire froze.
"About what?"
Daniel looked at Margaret.
That was enough.
"You both know."
"Claire," Daniel said, "where's your ring?"
"Your mother has it."
He looked at Margaret's closed fist.
"Mom?"
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel's attention returned to Claire.
"Please put it back on."
"No."
His face changed.
Claire had expected anger.
Instead, she saw fear.
Real fear.
"Claire, whatever you think you saw—"
"I saw my husband holding another woman like she belonged there."
"I was trying to keep her calm."
"By putting your hand around her waist?"
"She was terrified."
"So am I."
Daniel stopped.
Claire hadn't meant to say it.
He stepped closer.
"Why?"
She almost told him.
She almost opened the purse.
Then Margaret's warning returned.
Don't tell him about the baby.
Claire tightened her grip on the clutch.
"I need to leave."
Daniel moved in front of her.
"Not alone."
"Move."
"Claire—"
"Move."
Something in her voice made him obey.
Claire walked toward the ballroom exit.
Daniel followed.
Margaret followed him.
They had almost reached the doors when Claire's phone vibrated inside her purse.
Unknown number.
She stopped.
A message appeared.
DON'T GO HOME.
Claire's pulse jumped.
Another message arrived.
IF YOU'RE CARRYING RICHARD'S ENVELOPE, THEY ALREADY KNOW.
Claire stared at the screen.
"What is it?" Daniel asked.
She looked at Margaret.
Margaret looked horrified.
"What envelope?" Claire asked.
Nobody answered.
Her phone vibrated a third time.
A photograph appeared.
Claire opened it.
It showed her leaving Manhattan Women's Health that afternoon.
Someone had photographed her from across the street.
Her gold clutch was visible under her arm.
Beneath the photograph were five words.
WE KNOW ABOUT THE BABY.
Claire couldn't breathe.
Daniel stepped toward her.
"Claire?"
She locked the phone.
Too late.
He had seen her face.
"What's wrong?"
Claire looked around the ballroom.
Suddenly every stranger seemed to be watching her.
Every waiter.
Every guest.
Every camera.
Then Vanessa appeared behind the glass side doors.
She was staring directly at Claire.
Vanessa raised one hand.
Not waving.
Warning her.
Then she pointed toward the corridor behind Claire.
Claire turned.
A man in a black tuxedo stood near the elevators.
She had never seen him before.
He was holding something.
A photograph.
Her ultrasound photograph.
Claire instinctively opened her purse.
Her copy was still inside.
She looked back.
The man stepped into the elevator.
The doors began closing.
Claire ran.
"Claire!" Daniel shouted.
She reached the elevator too late.
The doors sealed.
She hit the button.
Nothing.
Then her phone vibrated again.
This message contained only an address.
1704 Park Avenue.
Below it:
11:30 P.M.
Claire stared at the numbers.
11:30 — 1704.
The same numbers written on her ultrasound.
Margaret reached her first.
Claire turned the phone toward her.
Margaret's face collapsed.
"You know this address."
Margaret didn't answer.
"Who lives there?"
Daniel arrived behind them.
"Mom?"
Margaret looked at her son.
Then at Claire.
"No one lives there anymore."
Claire felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret swallowed.
"It belonged to Richard."
Daniel went still.
"My father?"
Margaret nodded.
"He kept an apartment there for twenty-two years."
Daniel stared at her.
"You told me Dad never owned property in Manhattan."
"I lied."
"Why?"
Margaret looked at Claire's purse.
"Because your father left something there."
Claire tightened her grip on the ultrasound photograph.
"What?"
Margaret whispered:
"A letter for Daniel's wife."
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked as confused as she felt.
Then the elevator behind them chimed.
The doors opened.
Vanessa stood inside.
Her face was pale.
"Claire," she whispered. "Don't go to 1704."
Claire stepped toward her.
"Why?"
Vanessa looked past her.
Someone was approaching.
She reached for Claire's hand.
"Because Richard wasn't the only person waiting for you to become pregnant."
The elevator doors began closing.
Daniel caught them with his hand.
"Vanessa, who else knew?"
Vanessa stared at him.
Then at Claire's stomach.
Her voice dropped.
"Your brother."
Daniel's face emptied.
Claire had never met Daniel's brother.
According to Daniel, he had been dead for twelve years.
The elevator doors closed.
Claire turned toward Daniel.
He wasn't looking at her.
He was staring down the empty corridor.
A voice suddenly came from behind them.
"Daniel."
Daniel went completely still.
Claire looked toward the man walking out of the shadows.
May you like
Daniel whispered one word.
"Michael?"
