Chapter 5 - The Fathers' Debt

Arthur Vale smiled at his daughter.

"Hello, Claire."

She wanted to run to him.

She wanted to hit him.

She did neither.

"Let Margaret go."

Arthur glanced at Daniel's mother.

"Always direct. You got that from me."

"I got nothing from you."

Pain crossed his face.

Good.

"Claire—"

"Sixteen years."

"I was protecting you."

She almost screamed.

"Apparently every liar in my life attended the same seminar."

Michael moved toward the limousine.

Two armed men appeared.

Daniel stopped him.

Arthur sighed.

"I don't want violence."

"Then release my mother," Daniel said.

Arthur studied him.

"You look like Richard."

"Don't."

"He was my best friend once."

"Did you kill him?"

Arthur's smile vanished.

"No."

"Who did?"

Arthur looked at Margaret.

Claire understood.

"Margaret?"

Daniel turned toward his mother.

Margaret shook her head violently.

Arthur laughed.

"No. Margaret didn't kill Richard."

"Then why is her name listed as controller?"

"Because Richard gave her control."

Robert stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

"No. It's clever."

Arthur explained.

Richard had spent years dismantling the network from inside.

He transferred authority to Margaret because nobody considered her dangerous.

Margaret used that authority to freeze accounts and preserve evidence.

"Then why kidnap her?" Claire asked.

Arthur's eyes hardened.

"Because someone wants the access codes."

"Who?"

Arthur looked behind them.

Robert.

Claire turned.

Robert had disappeared.

Vanessa noticed too.

"Dad?"

A gunshot shattered the limousine window.

Everyone ducked.

Arthur dragged Margaret down.

Daniel pulled Claire behind a stone column.

Michael fired toward the building entrance.

Robert stood there.

Gun in hand.

Vanessa stared at him.

"Dad?"

Robert's face was empty.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

"I spent thirty years being Richard's second choice."

Vanessa began crying.

"You said you were helping us."

"I was helping myself."

Robert had built the modern network.

Arthur had helped create the original structure, then tried to dismantle it.

Richard joined him.

Robert took control.

Boston had been his order.

Richard's death had been his order.

The gala setup had been his order.

Even Daniel and Vanessa's compromising dance had been manipulated by a warning Robert planted.

Claire understood.

"You wanted me to leave Daniel."

"Yes."

"So the trust would lock."

"Yes."

"And my baby?"

Robert's silence changed everything.

Daniel moved in front of Claire.

"What about my child?"

Robert raised the gun.

"The child makes the trust permanent."

Daniel charged him.

The gun fired.

Claire screamed.

Daniel fell.

For one second, the world ended.

Then he rolled.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

Michael tackled Robert.

Police sirens erupted outside.

Vanessa dropped beside Daniel.

Claire reached him first.

"Daniel."

"I'm okay."

"You're bleeding."

"I've had better galas."

Claire laughed through tears.

She hated herself for it.

Paramedics arrived.

Robert was arrested.

Arthur released Margaret.

The evidence Richard collected was sent simultaneously to federal investigators, three newspapers, and outside counsel.

For the first time, Robert couldn't bury it.

But one question remained.

Claire rode beside Daniel to the hospital.

She held his hand.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because he was hurt.

At 3:40 a.m., Daniel woke after surgery.

Claire sat beside him.

His first words were:

"The baby?"

"Fine."

He cried.

Quietly.

Claire placed the ultrasound beside him.

Daniel touched it with one finger.

"I missed this."

"You missed a lot."

"I know."

He looked at her bare hand.

"I'm sorry."

Claire didn't rescue him from the silence.

"I should have told you about Vanessa."

"Yes."

"I thought secrecy protected you."

"It nearly destroyed us."

"I know."

"Do you love her?"

"No."

"Did you ever?"

"No."

"Did you kiss her?"

"No."

Claire believed him.

But belief wasn't the same as healing.

"I don't know if I'm coming home."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

That surprised her.

"You do?"

"I want you to choose me because you trust me. Not because you're pregnant."

Claire's eyes filled.

He continued.

"I'll earn whatever happens next."

At sunrise, Margaret entered.

She placed Claire's wedding ring on the bedside table.

"I think this belongs to you."

Claire looked at it.

"No."

Daniel's face fell.

Claire touched his hand.

"Not yet."

Margaret nodded.

Fair.

Two federal agents arrived.

Robert was in custody.

Accounts were frozen.

Arrests had begun.

Arthur and Eleanor entered protective custody voluntarily.

Michael agreed to testify.

For the first time, Claire's life was no longer built entirely on lies.

Then one agent pulled her aside.

"We found something in Robert's car."

"What?"

"A sealed envelope."

He handed it to her.

Richard's handwriting.

FOR CLAIRE — ONLY AFTER ROBERT IS CAUGHT.

Claire opened it.

Inside was one page.

Claire,

If Robert has been exposed, you probably believe the danger is over.

It isn't.

Robert never gave the order to kill me.

Claire stopped.

Her hands shook.

At the bottom, Richard had written a single name.

She read it.

May you like

Then looked toward the hospital room.

The person named in the letter was already standing beside Daniel's bed.
