Chapter 5 - The Recording My Mother Left Behind

I stared at the screen.
The video had ended.
But my mother's face remained frozen in my mind.
Alive.
Speaking.
Warning me.
Six years after everyone told me she was gone.
Nobody in the room moved.
My father looked like he had seen a ghost.
The older man beside him had lost all color from his face.
Even Claire looked shocked.
But I noticed something.
She wasn't surprised that my mother had recorded a message.
She was surprised that I had found it.
That difference mattered.
I looked at her.
"You knew about this."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel..."
"No."
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
"Don't say my name like that."
I held up my phone.
"You knew my mother left something behind."
Claire looked down.
"I knew she wanted you to find the truth."
"That's not what I asked."
She stayed silent.
And silence was becoming the answer everyone kept giving me.
I turned toward my father.
"How long?"
He looked at me.
"Daniel."
"How long did you know about this video?"
He didn't respond.
That was enough.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written for me.
My childhood.
My family.
My marriage.
Every important moment.
Maybe it had all been built on lies.
I walked away from them and went back into the office.
I needed to understand.
I needed proof.
Not excuses.
Not emotional speeches.
Proof.
I connected the flash drive to my father's computer.
A folder appeared.
No name.
No label.
Just a single date.
The day my mother died.
I opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Documents.
Photos.
Audio recordings.
And one video.
The title was simple.
"Daniel."
My hands stopped moving.
I clicked it.
The screen turned black.
Then my mother's face appeared again.
This time, she wasn't sitting in the dark room.
She was in our old house.
The house where I grew up.
She looked exhausted.
But determined.
"Daniel, if you're watching this, I need you to listen carefully."
I leaned closer.
"My husband will tell you I was sick. He will tell you I imagined things. He will tell you I became paranoid."
My chest tightened.
"But I was not wrong."
My mother's eyes moved away from the camera.
Like she was checking if someone was nearby.
"Your father has been hiding something for years."
A pause.
Then:
"He wasn't working alone."
I stopped breathing.
The video continued.
"There is someone else. Someone who has been helping him."
I looked at Claire.
She was standing behind me.
Watching the screen.
My mother continued.
"Daniel, the person closest to you may not be the person you think they are."
The video froze.
A notification appeared.
File corrupted.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Only that one sentence.
The person closest to you.
I turned around.
Everyone was silent.
My eyes moved to Claire.
She immediately shook her head.
"No."
"I didn't say anything."
"But you thought it."
I looked at her.
"Who did my mother mean?"
Claire wiped her tears.
"I don't know."
My father suddenly spoke.
"She's lying."
Everyone looked at him.
He stepped into the office.
"Claire has been manipulating you since the beginning."
I laughed.
A bitter laugh.
"Funny."
I pointed at him.
"You are the one who introduced us."
My father went quiet.
And that was the moment I realized something.
He had chosen Claire.
Not me.
Years ago.
Before I ever knew her.
My father had brought this woman into my life.
There was a reason.
I just didn't know what it was.
The older man stepped forward.
"Daniel, you need to leave."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because you don't understand the danger you're in."
I looked around the room.
"My wife betrayed me."
"My father lied to me."
"My dead mother left me warnings."
I stepped closer.
"I think I understand enough."
The man sighed.
"My name is Thomas."
I waited.
"I worked with your mother."
That caught my attention.
"You were the person in the photograph."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Why were you standing with my parents?"
Thomas looked at Richard.
Then at me.
"Because your mother trusted me."
My father interrupted.
"Thomas, stop."
But Thomas continued.
"Your mother discovered the truth about Richard."
My father's expression changed.
"She discovered that Richard wasn't protecting you."
Silence.
"He was controlling you."
Those words hit harder than I expected.
Because deep down, I had always felt it.
Every decision.
Every relationship.
Every important moment.
My father always had an opinion.
A suggestion.
A reason why he knew better.
But I never saw it as control.
I saw it as love.
Until now.
Thomas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"My mother gave me this before she died."
I stared.
"Your mother?"
He nodded.
"She told me to give it to you only if Richard failed to tell you the truth."
I took the envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
My mother's handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was another photograph.
This one was newer.
My father.
Claire.
And Thomas.
Standing outside a building.
I looked at the date.
Three months before my wedding.
My stomach turned.
Because behind them was another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who shouldn't have been there.
My mother.
Alive.
I looked at Thomas.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
A video.
I opened it.
The screen showed a security camera recording.
A woman walking into a building.
The date was the same day my mother supposedly died.
I watched the woman turn toward the camera.
My hands began shaking.
Because I knew that face.
It was my mother.
But the timestamp was impossible.
The video was recorded six years ago.
The day after her funeral.
And then the camera zoomed in on the person standing beside her.
A person I never expected to see.
My father whispered behind me:
"Daniel..."
I turned.
He looked terrified.
May you like
Because he knew who was in the video.
The person standing beside my mother was...
