Chapter 2 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photo on my phone for almost a full minute.

I didn't move.

I didn't breathe.

I just looked at the two people standing together in that picture.

My father.

And Claire.

They weren't standing like strangers.

They weren't standing like two people who had only met after my relationship with her began.

They looked comfortable.

Familiar.

Like they had a history.

A history I knew nothing about.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

The message underneath the picture remained on the screen.

"Ask your father why he really introduced you to her."

I read it again.

Then again.

My first thought was that someone was trying to destroy my marriage.

Someone wanted to hurt my family.

But then I looked closer at the photograph.

There was something written in the corner.

A date.

Eight years earlier.

Eight years.

That was impossible.

Eight years ago, Claire didn't even know me.

At least, that's what I believed.

I walked downstairs slowly.

The house felt different now.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same place where I had celebrated the happiest day of my life only hours earlier.

But it no longer felt like home.

It felt like a crime scene.

My father was still sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked up when he saw me.

"You look tired."

I stared at him.

"I found something."

His expression changed slightly.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

"What did you find?"

I placed my phone on the table.

The photo was still open.

My father looked down.

And his face went pale.

That reaction told me everything.

He knew.

He knew exactly what I was looking at.

"Daniel..."

I had never heard him say my name like that before.

Not with fear.

Not with guilt.

"Who sent this to me?"

He didn't answer.

"How long have you known Claire?"

My father's jaw tightened.

"That's not the question you should be asking."

I laughed.

A cold, painful laugh.

"Not the question?"

I leaned closer.

"My wife was in your bedroom last night."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

My father looked away.

That hurt more than any confession.

Because a man who was innocent would have been angry.

He would have denied it.

He would have demanded an explanation.

But my father just sat there.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

"Daniel, there are things you don't understand."

"Then explain them."

"I was trying to protect you."

Those words made me freeze.

Protect me?

From what?

From my wife?

From him?

I stood up.

"Don't use that excuse with me."

My voice shook.

"I spent my entire life believing you were the one person who would never betray me."

My father looked at me with sadness.

"I never wanted this to happen."

"But you let it happen."

Before he could answer, Claire walked into the kitchen.

She stopped immediately.

She saw my face.

Then she saw my phone on the table.

The color disappeared from hers.

"What happened?"

I turned toward her.

"How long?"

She didn't respond.

"How long have you known my father?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel..."

"Answer me."

She looked at my father.

That small movement destroyed whatever hope I had left.

They were still protecting each other.

Not me.

"I met him before I met you," she whispered.

The room became silent.

"How long before?"

She looked down.

"Years."

I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.

"Years?"

Claire wiped her tears.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

She didn't answer.

"After we got married?"

Her silence was enough.

I walked away.

I needed air.

I needed space.

But most importantly, I needed the truth.

I went back upstairs and opened the envelope I found in Claire's suitcase.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was not Claire's.

It belonged to my mother.

My hands started shaking.

My mother had died six years earlier.

Why was her letter hidden inside my wife's belongings?

I unfolded the paper.

Only one sentence was written.

"Daniel, if Claire is standing beside you on your wedding day, it means your father failed to stop her."

I stopped reading.

My heart raced.

I turned the paper over.

There was more.

"Do not trust everything your father tells you."

I sat down.

My mother knew Claire.

My mother knew something about my father.

And somehow, Claire was connected to all of it.

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Claire was standing in the doorway.

Her eyes were full of fear.

"Where did you get that?"

I held up the letter.

"My mother's things."

Claire stepped back.

"Daniel, please listen to me."

"No."

I stood.

"You listen to me."

I pointed at the letter.

"My dead mother warned me about you."

Claire started crying.

"Your mother didn't understand."

"Then make me understand."

She looked at the floor.

"I didn't marry you because of your father."

The words surprised me.

Because they were not what I expected.

"Then why?"

She looked up.

And for the first time since I met her, I saw real fear in her eyes.

"Because your father was trying to keep you away from the truth."

I stared at her.

"What truth?"

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, my phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

This time, there was no photo.

Only a sentence.

"Go to your father's office before he destroys the evidence."

I looked at Claire.

She looked at my phone.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"You're too late."

I turned toward the hallway.

May you like

Because the office door downstairs had just opened.

And someone was already inside.
