Chapter 1 - The Door I Was Never Supposed To Open

I heard a woman whisper behind a locked bedroom door: "Please, no one can know about this."
When I stepped inside, I found my wedding ring box sitting on my father's nightstand. Inside it was a photograph I had never seen before. On the back were three words written in my wife's handwriting: "Forgive me, Daniel." My wedding night was never what I thought it was.
I used to believe the happiest day of my life would be the day I married Claire.
For years, I imagined that moment.
The music.
The vows.
The way she would look at me when we promised forever.
I had no idea that the same night I placed a ring on her finger, I would begin uncovering the biggest betrayal of my life.
My name is Daniel Carter, and before that night, I thought I understood my family.
I thought I understood love.
I thought I knew exactly who would stand beside me when everything changed.
I was wrong.
The wedding had been perfect.
At least, that was what everyone told me.
My father, Richard, had paid for the entire ceremony. He insisted that Claire and I deserved something unforgettable.
He was the kind of man everyone admired.
Successful.
Confident.
Respected.
After my mother passed away years earlier, he became the person everyone looked to. He built his company from nothing, raised me alone, and always told me one thing:
"Family is the only thing you can trust when the world turns against you."
I believed him.
I had no reason not to.
Claire loved him too.
That was something I noticed early in our relationship.
At first, I thought it was sweet.
She always asked about his opinion.
She laughed at his jokes.
She said he was "different from other men."
I never questioned it.
Why would I?
My father was older.
He was my family.
And Claire was the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
That night, after everyone left the wedding reception, I carried Claire into the house that my father had prepared for us.
The entire place was decorated with flowers and candles.
There were still white ribbons hanging near the staircase.
Photos from our wedding day covered the living room walls.
Everything looked like a dream.
Claire smiled as she walked into our bedroom.
She looked beautiful.
She wore a simple white silk dress after changing out of her wedding gown.
I remember looking at her and thinking I was the luckiest man alive.
I walked toward her.
I reached for her hand.
But she suddenly stepped back.
"Daniel..."
Her voice changed.
"What?"
She looked away.
"I can't sleep with you tonight."
I laughed softly because I thought she was joking.
"What do you mean?"
She touched my arm.
"I'm sorry. I got my period."
For a second, I didn't know what to say.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was surprised.
It was our wedding night.
The night we had talked about for months.
But she looked uncomfortable, so I didn't push.
"It's okay," I said.
She smiled.
"Thank you for understanding."
I kissed her forehead.
I told myself that love wasn't about one night.
It was about patience.
Trust.
Respect.
I didn't know that while I was trying to be the perfect husband, she was already hiding something from me.
That night, I slept alone.
Around midnight, I woke up.
The room was dark.
The house was silent.
I reached over and saw that Claire was gone.
At first, I thought she was in the bathroom.
I waited.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Still nothing.
I sat up.
Then I heard it.
A sound.
Coming from down the hallway.
At first, I thought I was imagining it.
But then I heard it again.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Breathing heavily.
My heart started beating faster.
I got out of bed.
"Claire?"
No answer.
The hallway was dark.
The only light came from the small lamp near the stairs.
I slowly walked forward.
Then I realized where the sound was coming from.
My father's bedroom.
I stopped.
My father's bedroom.
I stood there for several seconds, trying to convince myself there was another explanation.
Maybe someone was visiting.
Maybe I misunderstood.
Maybe there was something innocent happening.
But then I heard Claire's voice.
"Richard..."
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
I knew exactly whose voice it was.
I stepped closer.
The door was slightly open.
I could see shadows moving inside.
My hand touched the door handle.
But I didn't open it immediately.
A thousand thoughts went through my mind.
My wife.
My father.
My wedding night.
The excuse.
The missing hours.
The strange feeling I had ignored for months.
Everything suddenly connected.
I looked through the small opening.
And I saw them.
Claire was sitting on the edge of my father's bed.
Her hand was on his shoulder.
My father was looking at her the same way a man looks at someone he has known for a long time.
Not like a father looking at his son's wife.
Like someone hiding a secret.
My chest felt empty.
I couldn't breathe.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to break the door down.
But something stopped me.
A strange calm came over me.
Because when someone destroys your entire reality in one second, anger is not always the first emotion.
Sometimes it is disbelief.
I quietly stepped away.
I walked back to my room.
I sat on the edge of the bed where I had waited for my wife.
The same bed where I had believed my new life was beginning.
I looked at my wedding ring.
I looked at the photograph of Claire and me beside the nightstand.
And for the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known her.
The next morning, Claire came back before sunrise.
She acted normal.
That was the part that hurt the most.
She kissed my cheek.
"Good morning, husband."
I looked at her.
The woman I loved.
The woman who had just destroyed me.
And I said nothing.
Because I needed answers.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Answers.
Later that morning, I went downstairs and found my father drinking coffee like nothing happened.
He looked at me.
He smiled.
"How was your first night as a married man?"
I stared at him.
I wanted to ask everything.
I wanted to demand the truth.
But I noticed something on the table.
Something that made my blood run cold.
A small silver necklace.
I had seen it before.
It belonged to my mother.
The woman my father claimed he never betrayed.
I picked it up.
My father immediately stood.
"Where did you get that?"
His voice was different.
Fearful.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in my father's eyes.
I looked at the necklace.
Then at him.
And I realized something.
My wife's betrayal was not the only secret in this house.
I walked back upstairs and checked Claire's suitcase while she was taking a shower.
Inside, beneath her clothes, I found an envelope.
My name was written on the front.
But before I could open it, my phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
One photo.
I opened it.
And my hands started shaking.
Because the picture showed my father and Claire together years before my wedding day...
May you like
and underneath the photo was a message that said:
"Ask your father why he really introduced you to her."
