Chapter 6 - The Truth My Family Tried To Bury

I knew the person standing beside my father.

And that was what hurt the most.

Because I had trusted her.

For years.

She stood at the bottom of the stairs, wearing a calm expression that almost made me doubt what I was seeing.

Almost.

Then she looked at me.

And I saw it.

No surprise.

No confusion.

No fear.

She already knew I would find out.

"Clara?"

Her name left my mouth before I could stop it.

The room became completely silent.

My wife’s former supervisor.

The woman who had recommended Clara for her first nursing position.

The woman who had attended our wedding.

The woman Clara had once described as a second mother.

She stood beside my father.

Richard Carter.

The man who had tried to steal my company.

My stomach twisted.

"No."

Clara whispered from behind me.

I turned around.

She had followed me into the house.

She stood frozen.

Her face had lost all color.

"Arthur..."

I walked toward her immediately.

"Stay behind me."

She nodded.

But her eyes never left the woman beside my father.

Her name was Linda.

Linda Parker.

And for the first time in my life, I saw her differently.

My father smiled.

Not warmly.

Not like a father.

Like someone who believed he had already won.

"I see you've discovered some things."

I stared at him.

"Some things?"

My voice was quiet.

"Is that what you call stealing from me?"

His expression didn't change.

"Careful."

That single word told me everything.

He wasn't sorry.

He wasn't embarrassed.

He was warning me.

"You came into my office."

He looked around.

"My house."

I almost laughed.

"Your house?"

I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

"The same house I paid for?"

His jaw tightened.

For a second, the mask slipped.

Then Linda stepped forward.

"Arthur, you don't understand the situation."

I looked at her.

"You're right."

I nodded slowly.

"I don't understand how someone Clara trusted could help my father destroy my life."

Clara closed her eyes.

That hurt me.

Because I knew she was remembering every conversation she had ever had with Linda.

Every piece of advice.

Every moment she believed she was safe.

Linda looked uncomfortable.

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

I stared at her.

"My wife was humiliated in front of your eyes."

She looked away.

"That wasn't part of the plan."

The words froze the room.

The plan.

Everyone heard it.

Vanessa looked at her father.

"What plan?"

Richard's expression changed.

"Vanessa."

But it was too late.

She had heard.

I had heard.

Everyone had.

I stepped closer.

"Explain."

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A broken laugh.

"You really planned this?"

She looked at my father.

"All of this?"

Richard looked irritated.

"Don't be dramatic."

The same words.

Again.

But this time, nobody was listening.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I thought you were just trying to protect the family."

Richard looked at her.

"I am."

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"You were protecting yourself."

That was the first time I saw my sister stop defending him.

She looked at me.

And for a moment, she wasn't the woman who threw water at my wife.

She was just a daughter realizing her father had used everyone.

"I didn't know about the company."

I believed her.

Because she looked terrified.

But I still couldn't forgive what she had done.

Not yet.

My father walked toward the desk.

"You are making a mistake, Arthur."

I watched him carefully.

"No."

I shook my head.

"I made the mistake years ago."

He stopped.

"I confused helping you with being loved by you."

His face hardened.

"You think your success happened because of you?"

There it was.

The truth.

The thing he had always believed.

"I gave you opportunities."

I nodded.

"You did."

He seemed surprised.

"I admit that."

Then I looked at him.

"But you never gave me permission to become my own person."

Silence.

Linda looked down.

My father looked angry.

"Everything I did was for this family."

"No."

I looked at the documents.

"Everything you did was for control."

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

Because he knew.

I had stopped being the son he could manipulate.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Tell me."

His voice was urgent.

"Arthur, I found the original documents."

My heart started beating faster.

"Where?"

"Your father's private server."

I looked at my father.

He watched me.

He knew.

"What did you find?"

Daniel took a breath.

"The transfer plan wasn't created to remove you."

I frowned.

"What?"

"It was created to replace you."

I looked at Clara.

Then back at my father.

"Explain."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Arthur, there is a clause that activates if you are declared mentally incapable of managing the company."

The room went silent.

My blood turned cold.

"They wanted to make me look unstable."

"Yes."

I looked at my father.

The cruel dinner.

The fight.

The story they were creating.

Everything had a purpose.

Daniel continued.

"There is one more thing."

"What?"

"The person who created the psychological evaluation request..."

I waited.

"Was Linda."

Everyone looked at her.

Linda's face changed.

"No."

My father immediately stepped forward.

"Enough."

But it was too late.

The truth was already out.

Clara covered her mouth.

Linda looked at her.

"Clara, I can explain."

My wife stepped back.

"How long?"

Linda said nothing.

"How long did you know?"

Linda looked ashamed.

And that was worse.

Because shame meant she knew.

"I was told it would only be financial."

Clara stared at her.

"You helped them destroy my husband."

"I thought I was helping you."

That sentence made no sense.

"What?"

Linda looked at Clara.

"Arthur's family told me you were becoming dangerous."

I felt anger rise.

"Because of Clara?"

Linda nodded.

"They said you changed after meeting her."

I almost couldn't believe it.

They had convinced people that my wife was the problem.

That the woman who saved children's lives was somehow a threat.

Then Margaret spoke.

"Richard has always done this."

Everyone turned.

She stood near the window.

"He creates a story first."

My father glared at her.

"Stay out of this."

Margaret ignored him.

"Then he convinces everyone around him that the story is true."

My father stepped forward.

"You don't know anything."

Margaret smiled sadly.

"I know exactly who you are."

The room became tense.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Daniel.

I opened it.

A picture appeared.

A document.

The final page.

At the bottom was a signature.

Not my father's.

Not Linda's.

Someone else's.

I zoomed in.

And felt my entire body freeze.

Because the signature belonged to the person standing closest to me.

The person I thought I could trust.

I slowly looked up.

Everyone noticed my expression.

Clara whispered:

"Arthur?"

I couldn't speak.

My father smiled slightly.

Because he knew what I had seen.

He knew before I did.

I turned the phone around.

The signature was clear.

The room went silent.

Then Margaret whispered:

"No..."

Vanessa stepped backward.

"That can't be."

And Linda covered her mouth.

May you like

Because the person who signed the final agreement was not my father.

It was Clara...
