Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden In Damien’s Contract

The man who entered the ballroom carried a black briefcase and a look that made Damien Cole lose his confidence.
"Damien Cole, you still have one chance to tell the truth."
When Adrian Marchetti opened the contract folder, he revealed a hidden signature page Damien never wanted anyone to see.
But written beside the final clause were four words:
"She was never yours."
Damien suddenly realized his biggest secret had been discovered.
The entire ballroom watched as the stranger walked through the closing doors.
Nobody spoke.
The orchestra members stood frozen beside their instruments.
The guests who had been whispering moments earlier now looked between Damien and the man holding the black briefcase.
I didn't know who he was.
But Damien did.
I saw it in his eyes.
For the first time that night, my husband looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
Adrian noticed it too.
He turned slightly toward the man.
"You're late."
The stranger adjusted his glasses and looked at his watch.
"I wanted to give Damien enough time to admit everything himself."
Damien took a step forward.
"What are you doing here?"
The man's expression didn't change.
"You know exactly why I'm here."
The room became heavier.
I looked at my brothers.
Adrian stood beside me.
Marcus and Julian were behind him.
For years, I had seen them as my protectors.
The brothers who always showed up when I needed them.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, they weren't here because I called them.
They were here because someone had already known something was wrong.
I looked at Adrian.
"What is happening?"
He didn't answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Adrian never hesitated.
Not when he was angry.
Not when he was protecting someone.
Never.
But now...
He looked at me with guilt.
"Isabelle, there are things Damien never told you."
I felt my chest tighten.
I looked at Damien.
He avoided my eyes.
That was enough.
"You knew?"
My voice was quiet.
Adrian looked away for a second.
"We suspected."
The words hurt.
"How long?"
Nobody answered.
I laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because suddenly, I realized everyone had been protecting me from the truth.
Everyone except the person who should have.
My husband.
Damien stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous."
He pointed at the man with the briefcase.
"You don't have proof of anything."
The stranger smiled slightly.
"Actually, I have everything."
He opened the briefcase.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Bank records.
And a small recording device.
Damien's face changed.
Just for a moment.
But everyone saw it.
"What is that?"
The stranger looked at him.
"The evidence you thought disappeared."
A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.
I stared at Damien.
"What evidence?"
He looked at me.
For the first time, I saw panic.
"Isabelle, don't listen to them."
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
After everything.
After humiliating me.
After bringing another woman into our marriage.
He still thought he could control the conversation.
"You don't get to tell me what to listen to anymore."
My voice was stronger than I expected.
Damien froze.
Sophia moved closer to him.
"Damein..."
She whispered.
But he ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
I looked at him.
"No."
I said.
"I finally know exactly what I'm doing."
The stranger placed a document on the table.
Adrian picked it up.
"This is the agreement Damien signed eight months ago."
I frowned.
"Agreement?"
Marcus looked at me.
"The divorce preparation documents."
My heart stopped.
Eight months ago.
Not yesterday.
Not recently.
Eight months.
While I was planning our anniversary.
While I was choosing flowers.
While I was carrying his child.
He was planning how to erase me from his life.
I looked at Damien.
"Eight months?"
He didn't speak.
That silence answered everything.
The room seemed to spin.
I remembered every moment.
Every late night.
Every excuse.
Every business trip.
Every time he told me he was tired.
I thought he was building our future.
He was preparing his escape.
"You were going to leave me before tonight."
Damien finally spoke.
"You don't understand."
I smiled sadly.
"That's the problem, Damien."
I looked at the document.
"I understood everything except the truth."
Sophia suddenly stepped forward.
"You act like he betrayed only you."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked uncomfortable, but she continued.
"Damien was unhappy."
I looked at her.
"Unhappy?"
She nodded.
"You never gave him what he needed."
The room became silent again.
But this time...
I didn't feel hurt.
I felt something else.
Clarity.
I looked at the woman who thought she had won.
"You really believe that?"
Sophia crossed her arms.
"He told me everything."
I glanced at Damien.
"And did he tell you everything?"
Her expression changed slightly.
A small reaction.
Almost invisible.
But I saw it.
Adrian saw it too.
"What didn't he tell you?"
Sophia looked at him.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Are you sure?"
He opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
Sophia looked down.
And the color disappeared from her face.
I couldn't see the picture clearly.
But I knew it affected her.
"What is that?"
Damien asked.
Nobody answered.
Julian picked up the photo.
"Interesting."
He looked at Damien.
"You told her Isabelle was the obstacle."
A pause.
"But you never told her she was only part of your plan."
My breathing stopped.
Plan?
I looked between them.
"What plan?"
Damien suddenly became angry.
"Enough."
His voice echoed.
"You don't know anything."
Adrian looked at him.
"We know more than you think."
Damien laughed.
"You think you can destroy me with some papers?"
The stranger finally spoke again.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"We don't need to destroy you."
He pushed the black briefcase forward.
"We just need Isabelle to know who she married."
Those words hit harder than anything else.
Because deep down...
I still hoped there was an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
Something that would make sense.
But every new piece of information made the truth darker.
I looked at Damien.
"Did you ever love me?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
For the first time all night...
He didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation destroyed the last part of me that still believed in him.
Sophia looked at him.
Waiting.
The guests looked at him.
Waiting.
My brothers looked at him.
Waiting.
Finally, Damien whispered:
"I loved what you represented."
The words were quiet.
But everyone heard them.
I closed my eyes.
For a second, I felt nothing.
Then I opened them.
And I knew.
The man I married was gone long before tonight.
The stranger collected the documents.
"There is one more thing."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
The man reached into the briefcase.
He removed an envelope.
A simple white envelope.
No name.
No label.
Only one sentence written on the front.
My hands became cold when I saw it.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It was mine.
But I had never written it.
Adrian noticed my reaction.
"Isabelle?"
I stared at the envelope.
"I don't understand."
The stranger looked at me.
"Your mother wrote this before she died."
The entire room went silent.
My mother.
A woman who had been gone for ten years.
A woman whose last words I still remembered.
A woman who had nothing to do with Damien.
Or so I thought.
I reached for the envelope.
My fingers touched the paper.
And then I noticed something.
The seal had already been broken.
Someone had opened it before me.
Someone who knew exactly what was inside.
I looked at Damien.
Because he suddenly looked more terrified than before.
And then the ballroom lights flickered once.
The stranger whispered:
"Isabelle... you need to know who opened this."
I turned the envelope over.
A name was written on the back.
May you like
A name that made my blood run cold.
Because it belonged to the person standing behind me...
