Chapter 1 - The Slap Heard Across The Ballroom

A woman in a white gown stood in the middle of the ballroom, crying: "Damien, please don't do this in front of everyone."

When Damien Cole reached for the champagne table, he found Isabelle Marchetti's wedding ring lying beside the broken glass.

But beneath the ring was a hidden note with three words written on it:

"She knows everything."

Damien suddenly realized the night was not going the way he planned.

The sound of Damien Cole’s palm striking my cheek was louder than the orchestra playing beneath the crystal chandeliers.

For a few seconds, I couldn't hear anything else.

Not the whispers.

Not the shocked gasps.

Not the sound of hundreds of expensive shoes moving against the marble floor.

I only felt the burning pain spreading across my face as I stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by people who had come to celebrate my marriage.

My hand slowly moved toward my cheek.

I was wearing the white silk gown Damien had chosen for me weeks earlier.

The same gown he said made me look like the woman he fell in love with.

The same man who had just humiliated me in front of everyone.

"Isabelle, stop pretending you are the victim."

His voice was cold.

Almost unfamiliar.

I looked at him.

My husband.

The man who had promised me forever five years ago.

The man who held my hand during our wedding ceremony and whispered that nothing in this world would ever separate us.

Now he stood in front of me with anger in his eyes.

And beside him stood the woman who had destroyed everything.

Sophia Bennett.

His mistress.

She wore a red evening dress that matched her confidence.

She wasn't shocked.

She wasn't embarrassed.

She was smiling.

That smile hurt more than the slap.

Because it told me she had expected this moment.

She had expected my husband to choose her.

She had expected me to fall.

But I didn't.

I took a slow breath and looked around the ballroom.

Four hundred guests were watching.

Business partners.

Family friends.

People who had spent years believing Damien Cole and Isabelle Marchetti had the perfect marriage.

They were seeing the truth for the first time.

The truth was not beautiful.

The truth was standing in front of them wearing a black tuxedo and holding another woman's hand.

"Damien..." I whispered.

My voice was quieter than I expected.

"Why?"

He laughed.

A small, bitter laugh.

"You still don't understand?"

His fingers tightened around Sophia's hand.

"Everyone here knows you only became Mrs. Cole because of your family's influence."

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Not because I believed him.

Because I couldn't believe he was saying these words after everything we had built together.

"You know that's not true."

Damien stepped closer.

"You think these people came tonight because they care about you?"

His eyes moved across the room.

"They came because they wanted to see the Cole family."

Then he looked back at me.

"And now they finally get to see who you really are."

I stared at him.

The man I married had disappeared somewhere.

I didn't know when it happened.

I didn't know how long he had been hiding this version of himself.

But I knew one thing.

The man standing in front of me wasn't the man who promised to protect me.

Sophia leaned closer to him.

"Damein, maybe we should leave."

She said it softly.

Almost like she cared.

But her eyes told another story.

She wanted everyone to see.

She wanted me broken.

Damien looked at her.

Then back at me.

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"I want her to hear this."

The room became even quieter.

I placed one hand over my stomach.

A small movement.

A reminder.

Our child.

The baby we had spent months waiting for.

The baby Damien once called his greatest blessing.

"You're doing this in front of your pregnant wife?"

Someone in the crowd whispered.

Damien heard it.

His expression changed.

Not with regret.

With annoyance.

"Don't use the baby to control me, Isabelle."

Those words cut deeper than anything else.

I looked at him in disbelief.

"Control you?"

I repeated.

"You think this is about control?"

He looked away.

For a moment, I saw something.

A small hesitation.

A tiny crack in his confidence.

But it disappeared quickly.

"You should have accepted reality months ago."

I frowned.

"What reality?"

Sophia stepped forward.

The entire ballroom watched her.

She adjusted the bracelet on her wrist.

A bracelet I recognized.

My bracelet.

The one Damien gave me on our second anniversary.

Except now it was on her arm.

My heart sank.

"I think she deserves to know the truth."

Sophia said.

Damien didn't stop her.

That was the moment I understood.

This wasn't an accident.

This wasn't an argument that went too far.

This was planned.

"What truth?"

I asked.

Sophia smiled.

"That Damien was going to leave you."

The room erupted in whispers.

I looked at Damien.

He didn't deny it.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of memories.

Five years of believing I had a partner.

And he was standing there letting another woman announce the end of my life.

"You were going to divorce me?"

My voice shook.

Damien crossed his arms.

"I was going to tell you after tonight."

"After our anniversary gala?"

"Yes."

I looked around.

At the flowers.

At the photographs from our wedding displayed near the entrance.

At the guests who came to celebrate five years together.

Everything suddenly felt like a cruel performance.

"You invited everyone here to watch me get replaced."

Damien didn't answer.

Because he didn't need to.

His silence was enough.

I turned away.

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to disappear.

But before I could take another step, Damien spoke again.

"You should be grateful."

I stopped.

Slowly, I looked back.

"What?"

He walked closer.

"You had a comfortable life because of me."

The room became silent.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"You were never the woman I wanted. You were just the woman who fit the image."

I felt something inside me break.

Not my heart.

Something colder.

Something stronger.

For years, I had defended Damien.

When people questioned him, I stood beside him.

When his company struggled, I supported him.

When he lost his father, I stayed awake every night beside him.

I had loved him when nobody else saw his pain.

And now he was telling the world I was nothing.

I looked at Sophia.

Then at Damien.

And for the first time that night...

I wasn't hurt.

I was calm.

"Are you finished?"

Damien seemed surprised.

"What?"

I wiped the tears from my eyes.

"Are you finished destroying everything?"

The confidence on his face disappeared for half a second.

Because he expected me to cry.

He expected me to beg.

He expected me to fight for him.

But I didn't.

I simply looked at him.

And that frightened him more.

"You think this is over?"

He asked.

I didn't answer.

Because suddenly, I noticed something.

The ballroom doors.

They had opened.

Three men were standing there.

The music stopped completely.

Every guest turned.

Even Damien looked confused.

The first man walked forward slowly.

Tall.

Calm.

Wearing a dark navy suit.

Behind him were two more men.

They had the same cold expression.

The same powerful presence.

My brothers.

Adrian.

Marcus.

Julian.

The three men Damien had spent years avoiding.

The three people who never forgave anyone who hurt me.

Damien's face changed.

Not much.

But enough.

He knew exactly who they were.

Adrian looked at me first.

Not at Damien.

Not at Sophia.

Only me.

Then his eyes moved to my cheek.

The room became colder.

"Who did this?"

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Damien forced a smile.

"Adrian, this is a family matter."

My oldest brother looked at him.

"No."

He said.

"This became our matter when you put your hand on my sister."

Nobody spoke.

Sophia suddenly looked nervous.

For the first time that night, she wasn't smiling.

Adrian reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small black folder.

He placed it on the nearest table.

Damien stared at it.

"What is that?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A document with Damien's signature.

Damien's expression changed.

Because he recognized it.

"You weren't supposed to have that."

Adrian looked directly at him.

"You're right."

A pause.

"We weren't supposed to find it."

He pushed the document across the table.

Damien didn't move.

Then Adrian said:

"But someone wanted us to."

Damien slowly looked at the paper.

His face lost all color.

May you like

Because written at the bottom of the document was a name he never expected to see.

And behind my brothers, the ballroom doors slowly closed as someone else entered...
