Chapter 5 - The Betrayal at Fort Bellamy

"Step away from my son."

Richard's voice did not sound like the man from the parade field.

No anger.

No performance.

Just cold certainty.

Bennett slowly turned.

"Richard."

Daniel stared.

"Dad?"

Richard's pistol remained steady.

For one terrible second, no one moved.

Then the contractor behind Daniel shifted his weapon.

Richard fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling above him.

Dust exploded.

"Next one isn't a warning."

The contractor froze.

Bennett looked almost disappointed.

"You always were sentimental underneath all that discipline."

Richard stepped farther into the room.

"I trusted you."

"You needed me."

"You came to my son's funeral."

"I arranged it."

Richard's face twisted.

Daniel looked at me.

"How did he get here?"

"Apparently nobody in this family understands 'stay behind.'"

Even Daniel managed a weak smile.

Then the lights went out.

Gunfire cracked.

I dropped beneath the table.

Someone shouted.

Mercer's radio burst to life.

"Move! Move!"

Emergency lights flashed red.

Daniel hit the floor.

Richard fired toward the contractors.

Glass shattered.

I crawled toward Daniel.

My hand found his.

Real.

Warm.

Alive.

He squeezed hard.

"Ellie."

"Later."

"Fair."

Mercer and two security officers breached through the side door.

Bennett disappeared into the corridor.

One contractor surrendered.

The other ran.

Richard grabbed Daniel and pulled him behind the table.

For the first time in eleven months, father and son looked directly at one another.

Richard touched Daniel's face.

"I buried you."

Daniel swallowed.

"I know."

"I thought—"

"I know, Dad."

There wasn't time for more.

Cole's voice came through the radio.

"Bennett is moving toward the underground network center."

Daniel's head snapped toward me.

"He can't reach it."

"Why?"

"Lantern has a purge system."

"What kind?"

"Not data."

My stomach dropped.

"Explain."

Daniel pushed himself upright.

"The network center controls emergency systems across several restricted facilities. If Bennett activates purge, he can trigger fires, lock doors, destroy servers, and make it look like an electrical failure."

"How many people?"

"Today? Hundreds."

Richard turned pale.

The ceremony.

Families.

Soldiers.

Staff.

Bennett had chosen Founders Day intentionally.

Chaos would conceal his escape and destroy evidence.

Daniel looked at me.

"He still needs your card for the main archive."

"Then why go to the network center?"

"He has a copy."

I stared.

"Impossible."

"He copied your authorization structure years ago. The silver card isn't just a key. It's a kill switch."

I pulled it out.

Daniel nodded.

"If you insert it into Lantern's primary controller, it will revoke every fraudulent Night Shade credential."

"Why didn't you do it?"

"It requires the registered controller."

Me.

We moved.

Cole met us in the corridor.

When he saw Daniel, his professional composure broke.

"You stubborn bastard."

Daniel almost laughed.

"Good to see you too."

Cole put a hand on his shoulder.

Then immediately returned to command mode.

"Bennett is heading below headquarters."

Of course.

The underground facility I had refused to enter.

The warning hadn't been telling me Cole was the danger.

It had been telling me Bennett wanted us underground.

Daniel took a radio.

"There's another entrance beneath the old communications annex."

Cole assigned teams.

Richard refused to leave Daniel.

This time I didn't argue.

We crossed Fort Bellamy through service corridors while the public areas evacuated.

Alarm sirens began sounding.

Not real emergency alarms.

Bennett manipulating the system.

A recorded voice told personnel to shelter inside designated buildings.

"He's concentrating people," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"If he locks them in, he controls casualties."

Cole switched radio channels.

"Ignore automated shelter instructions. Evacuate all nonessential personnel to open areas."

Static.

Then Voss's voice answered.

"Too late, sir."

Cole stopped walking.

"Voss."

"You should have stayed out of this."

Richard grabbed the radio.

"You murdered my son."

Voss laughed.

"Your son is standing beside you."

"You know what I mean."

"I followed orders."

"Whose?"

"You know whose."

Bennett.

Richard closed his eyes.

For years Voss had been beside him.

Briefings.

Travel.

Family dinners.

Daniel's wedding.

Emily's graduation.

He had been watching all of them.

"Where is my daughter?" Richard asked.

Silence.

"Voss."

"Ask Bennett."

The connection died.

We reached the communications annex.

Daniel entered a code into an old maintenance panel.

A hidden elevator opened.

Richard stared.

"How long has this been here?"

"Since before you took command," Daniel said.

The elevator descended.

Three levels.

Four.

Five.

The doors opened onto a brightly illuminated underground operations center.

Banks of servers.

Control panels.

Encrypted terminals.

And dozens of monitors showing Fort Bellamy.

Bennett stood at the center console.

Voss beside him.

Emily sat restrained against a wall.

Richard saw her.

"Emily."

Her head lifted.

"Dad?"

Voss raised his weapon.

Cole's security team aimed back.

Bennett held up one hand.

"Everyone relax."

Daniel whispered, "He has purge control."

On the center screen:

SYSTEM PURGE READY.

AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Bennett looked at me.

"You know what happens next."

"I insert the card."

"Correct."

"And you release them."

"Daniel and Emily."

"Everyone."

He smiled.

"You still think you're negotiating."

I stepped forward.

"Eleanor," Daniel warned.

I held up the card.

Bennett's eyes followed it.

"Deactivate the facility locks."

"Card first."

"Emily first."

Voss tightened his grip on his weapon.

Bennett considered.

Then nodded.

Voss cut Emily's restraints.

She stood unsteadily.

Richard took one step.

Voss pointed at him.

"Don't."

Emily looked at her father.

Three years of absence.

Three years of fear.

Richard looked smaller than I had ever seen him.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Emily's eyes filled.

"Not yet."

Bennett extended his hand.

"The card."

I walked toward the console.

Inserted it.

The system scanned.

CONTROLLER VERIFIED.

Bennett smiled.

Then the screen changed.

COUNTERMAND AUTHORITY ENABLED.

His smile disappeared.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing yet."

I entered Daniel's emergency phrase.

Not a code.

A sentence.

The one he had whispered to me on our wedding night when I joked that classified work had ruined his ability to be romantic.

HOME IS WHERE THEY CAN'T ORDER US.

The system paused.

Then:

PROJECT LANTERN AUTHORITY REVOKED.

Every monitor turned red.

Voss shouted.

Bennett lunged toward the card.

Richard intercepted him.

They crashed against the console.

Voss raised his weapon toward me.

A shot fired.

Voss dropped.

Mercer stood behind him, weapon raised.

"Ma'am?"

"I'm fine."

Bennett shoved Richard away and ran toward an emergency door.

Daniel tried to follow but collapsed.

I caught him.

Cole sent officers after Bennett.

Alarms changed tone.

SERVER PURGE CANCELLED.

LOCKDOWN RELEASED.

Across the monitors, doors began opening.

People moved safely outside.

For the first time all day, I thought we had won.

Then Emily looked at the main screen.

"No."

I followed her gaze.

A separate upload was running.

LANTERN ARCHIVE EXTERNAL TRANSFER.

42%.

Daniel looked horrified.

"Bennett is sending the archive out."

"To whom?"

Emily walked toward a secondary console.

"I found references when they were holding me. Lantern wasn't Bennett's program."

I stared.

"What?"

"He inherited it."

The transfer climbed.

48%.

"Who created it?"

Emily entered a command.

A personnel file appeared.

Richard saw the photograph before anyone else.

His entire body went still.

"No."

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Dad?"

Richard whispered:

"That's impossible."

The photograph showed a woman in a military intelligence uniform.

Beautiful.

Dark hair.

Forty years younger than Richard.

I recognized her from the framed photographs in the Harrow family home.

Margaret Harrow.

Richard's wife.

Daniel and Emily's mother.

Dead for twenty-two years.

Below her photograph:

PROJECT LANTERN — FOUNDING DIRECTOR.

And the external upload destination was registered in her name.
