Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried Beneath The Mountain

A voice from the darkness whispered:
"Caleb Ward... your father was part of this too."
Caleb froze.
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Not afraid.
Not defeated.
But surprised.
Elena saw it.
And that scared her more than anything else.
Because Caleb had faced armed men.
He had walked through deadly storms.
He had pulled her from a frozen grave.
But this name had reached somewhere deeper.
His father.
Caleb slowly turned toward the broken window.
"Who are you?"
No answer came.
Only the sound of footsteps moving through the snow.
The attackers were not rushing anymore.
They were waiting.
Like they knew the truth was already inside the cabin.
Like they knew the people trapped inside were about to break apart.
Elias looked at Caleb.
"You never told her."
Caleb's eyes moved toward him.
"Told her what?"
The old man's expression changed.
"The truth about your family."
Elena looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Caleb said nothing.
And that silence hurt her.
Because she had spent years surrounded by people who kept secrets from her.
She could not survive another one.
"Caleb."
His eyes met hers.
"I don't know what he's talking about."
Elias stepped closer.
"Your father was not just a mountain guide."
Caleb's jaw tightened.
"Be careful."
"I knew him."
The room went still.
"My father died when I was young."
Elias nodded.
"Yes."
"And you expect me to believe you knew him?"
"I expect you to remember."
Caleb's expression changed slightly.
A memory.
Small.
Buried.
A voice from childhood.
A name he had not heard in decades.
Elias continued.
"Your father helped Elena's father hide the evidence against Thomas Hale."
Elena looked shocked.
"Why?"
"Because both men discovered the same thing."
Elias looked toward the door.
"Thomas Hale wasn't just stealing land."
The wind howled outside.
"He was building an empire through fear."
Caleb lowered his rifle slightly.
"Why would my father help?"
Elias looked at him.
"Because he knew what happened when good people stayed silent."
That sentence hit Caleb harder than expected.
Because he had spent his entire life believing his father was a simple man.
A hardworking man.
A man who died too soon.
But now everything he remembered felt incomplete.
Elena held the letter tighter.
"My father trusted your father?"
Elias nodded.
"They were brothers in everything but blood."
Caleb looked away.
He hated how easily that felt possible.
Because deep inside, he remembered something.
A winter night.
A younger version of himself.
His father sitting by a fire.
Writing something.
Hiding something.
Caleb had asked him what it was.
His father had smiled and said:
"Some truths are too dangerous for children."
He had forgotten those words.
Until now.
A loud crash came from outside.
The men were moving again.
Caleb immediately returned to the present.
"Tunnel."
Everyone moved.
Samuel grabbed the metal box.
Elias followed.
Elena stopped.
Caleb looked back.
"What?"
She stared at the cabin.
At the place where she had felt safe.
Where someone had finally looked at her like she mattered.
"They will destroy everything."
Caleb understood.
Not the cabin.
Something more.
The proof.
The truth.
The chance for her name to be cleared.
He walked back.
Picked up the hidden documents.
Then handed them to her.
"No."
She looked confused.
"You keep them."
Caleb shook his head.
"No."
His voice softened.
"You carry your own story now."
For a moment, Elena could not speak.
Then she nodded.
The four of them entered the tunnel.
Behind them, the cabin door finally broke open.
Voices filled the room.
But they were already gone.
The tunnel was narrow.
Dark.
Cold.
The mountain surrounded them from every direction.
For hours, they moved silently.
Until Samuel stopped.
Caleb looked back.
"What is it?"
Samuel pointed ahead.
A small opening appeared.
A hidden exit.
They climbed out into the snow-covered valley.
For one moment, nobody moved.
They were free.
But Caleb knew better.
People like Thomas Hale did not stop because someone escaped.
They stopped when they were defeated.
And Thomas was not defeated yet.
They reached an abandoned mining station before sunrise.
Inside, Elias finally opened the metal box.
There was one final document.
A map.
Caleb unfolded it.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
Elena stepped closer.
He looked at the map.
At the marked location.
"No..."
Samuel looked at him.
"What did you find?"
Caleb pointed.
The location was not on Thomas Hale's property.
It was on Caleb's family's land.
The land he inherited after his father died.
Elena stared.
"Why would your father hide something there?"
Caleb did not answer.
Because another memory returned.
A memory of his father saying one sentence before he died.
A sentence Caleb had never understood.
"Protect the mountain."
Now he knew why.
Thomas Hale had not only been hunting Elena.
He had been hunting him.
A sound interrupted them.
A horse approaching.
Everyone went silent.
Caleb moved toward the window.
A rider stopped outside.
Alone.
No weapon visible.
No warning.
Just a person holding an envelope.
Elias looked at it.
And his face changed.
"What is it?"
The old man whispered:
"That seal."
Caleb looked at him.
"What seal?"
Elias stepped backward.
Because he recognized it.
A symbol belonging to someone who should have disappeared twenty years ago.
The rider slowly raised the envelope toward the window.
Then Caleb saw the name written across the front.
His own.

The envelope was addressed:
"To Caleb Ward, from his father."
