Chapter 4 - The Man Who Carried The Truth

A man outside the cabin shouted:

"Caleb Ward, step away from her!"

Caleb looked through the window and saw Sheriff Grant Miller standing in the snow with a pistol drawn.

Beside him was a dead man's pocket watch covered in blood.

Engraved inside were two words:

"Thomas Hale."

Caleb suddenly realized the sheriff was not protecting the town.

He was protecting a secret.

The cabin became silent.

Elena stared at the window.

Her breathing became shallow.

Caleb noticed.

"That watch."

She nodded slowly.

"I've seen it before."

Samuel looked at her.

"Where?"

Elena's fingers tightened around the letter from her father.

"My father's office."

The words hung in the air.

Caleb looked toward the door.

Outside, the sheriff waited.

A man everyone trusted.

A man who had spent years wearing the badge of justice.

But now he stood outside a cabin with a weapon in his hand.

And Elena looked like she had already accepted what was coming.

"Tell me everything," Caleb said.

Elena looked down.

"I was sixteen when my father died."

Her voice was quiet.

"Everyone told me he fell from the mountain trail."

Caleb listened.

"But the night before he died, he told me something."

"What?"

She looked at the fire.

"He said if anything happened to him, I should never trust anyone wearing a badge."

Samuel closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

Caleb looked at him.

"You knew?"

Samuel did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

Caleb stepped closer.

"You knew."

Samuel lowered his head.

"I suspected."

Elena looked hurt.

"You suspected my father was murdered, and you said nothing?"

Samuel's expression broke.

"I tried."

"No."

Her voice shook.

"You disappeared."

Samuel accepted the blame.

"Because Thomas Hale found out I knew."

The room went quiet.

Outside, the sheriff shouted again.

"Caleb! This is your last warning!"

Caleb looked at the door.

Then at Elena.

"Stay here."

She immediately shook her head.

"No."

"You need to."

"I spent my entire life staying quiet."

Her eyes met his.

"I'm not doing it anymore."

For a moment, Caleb saw something different.

Not the frightened woman from the stagecoach.

Not the person who apologized for taking up space.

A woman who was tired of being hunted.

Samuel opened the metal box.

Inside was a collection of documents.

Property records.

Letters.

And photographs.

Caleb picked up one of the papers.

His eyes narrowed.

"This is Thomas Hale's signature."

Samuel nodded.

"He forged agreements with several families."

Elena looked at the documents.

"He planned everything."

"Yes."

Samuel pointed to another letter.

"But this is the one that matters."

Caleb read it.

The letter was from Thomas.

The words were simple.

But the meaning was clear.

A payment.

A threat.

An order.

Thomas had paid people to spread rumors about Elena.

He had paid merchants to refuse service.

He had paid officials to ignore complaints.

He had built a prison around her without ever using chains.

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"He destroyed her life."

Samuel nodded.

"And he was willing to destroy anyone who stood in his way."

A gunshot suddenly echoed outside.

The window shattered.

Elena screamed.

Caleb pushed her down behind the table.

Another shot followed.

The cabin walls shook.

Samuel grabbed the documents.

"They know we're here."

Caleb moved toward the side wall.

"How many?"

Samuel looked outside.

"Too many."

The storm covered the sound of movement.

Men surrounded the cabin.

Not just the sheriff.

Not just Thomas.

An entire group.

The same people who had watched Elena suffer for years.

The same people who had called her cursed.

Now they had come to silence her.

Caleb looked at Elena.

"Can you shoot?"

She stared at him.

"What?"

"Can you use a rifle?"

She hesitated.

"No."

Caleb handed her one.

"Tonight you learn."

Her hands shook as she held it.

"I don't want to hurt anyone."

Caleb looked at her.

"Neither do I."

He paused.

"But I want you alive."

Something changed in her expression.

Because nobody had ever said that before.

Not like they meant it.

The door suddenly shook.

Someone slammed against it.

Samuel moved toward the back of the cabin.

"There is another way out."

Caleb looked at him.

"Why didn't you mention that earlier?"

Samuel gave a tired smile.

"Because I hoped we wouldn't need it."

The three of them moved toward the hidden passage behind the fireplace.

Elena stopped.

She looked around the cabin.

The place where she had felt safe for the first time.

Caleb noticed.

"We're coming back."

She looked at him.

"You promise?"

He answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The door cracked.

Wood splintered.

Someone outside shouted.

"Bring Elena out!"

Caleb helped Samuel open the hidden door.

Cold air rushed inside.

A narrow tunnel disappeared beneath the mountain.

Before they could enter, the cabin door broke open.

A figure stepped through the smoke.

Elena froze.

Not because she recognized the face.

Because she recognized the voice.

"Hello, Elena."

Thomas Hale walked inside.

Behind him stood Sheriff Grant.

And beside them was another man.

A man Elena had not seen since the night her father died.

Her entire body went still.

Caleb saw the fear in her eyes.

"Who is he?"

Elena could barely speak.

"My father..."

She swallowed.

"My father said he was dead."

The man smiled.

Then he removed his gloves.

A familiar ring appeared on his finger.

The same ring Elena remembered from her childhood.

The same ring that had been beside her father's body.

Thomas stepped aside.

"Caleb Ward..."

The man walked closer.

"You should have stayed out of this."

Caleb raised his rifle.

But the stranger only smiled.

Because he knew something Caleb didn't.

He looked directly at Elena.

May you like

And whispered:

"Your father never died alone."
