Chapter 2 - The Man Who Stood Between Her And The World

The cabin door shook beneath the force of another удар.

"Caleb Ward! Open this door!"

Elena stepped backward.

Her face lost all color.

She knew that voice.

She had spent years hearing it speak words that made her feel smaller.

Caleb looked at her carefully.

"Who is he?"

Elena swallowed.

"Thomas Hale."

The name meant nothing to Caleb.

But the fear in her eyes meant everything.

Outside, the man knocked again.

Not like someone asking for help.

Like someone demanding ownership.

"Caleb, I know she's in there. You don't want to make this mistake."

Caleb moved closer to the door.

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't open it."

Her voice was barely audible.

"Please."

Caleb looked down at her hand holding his arm.

She released him quickly.

"I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

She looked away.

"Because every time something goes wrong, people say it's because of me."

For a moment, the only sound inside the cabin was the crackling fire.

Then Caleb walked toward the door.

And Elena's heart stopped.

"Caleb."

He paused.

She looked terrified.

Not because she thought he would hurt her.

Because she thought he would believe them.

"Whatever they say about me..."

Her voice trembled.

"Please don't believe everything."

Caleb rested his hand on the door.

"Elena."

She looked up.

"I found you buried under twelve feet of snow."

His voice was calm.

"The first thing you did when you woke up was worry about how I saw you."

He opened the small viewing window beside the door.

"That tells me more about you than anything they could say."

Outside stood three men.

Thomas Hale was in front.

He was a wealthy merchant from town.

A man who wore expensive coats and polished boots but carried himself like he owned every person around him.

Beside him stood Sheriff Grant Miller and another man Caleb recognized as one of the local ranch owners.

Thomas looked through the window.

"There you are."

Caleb opened the door only halfway.

The cold air rushed inside.

"What do you want?"

Thomas forced a smile.

"I came to take Elena home."

Caleb did not move.

"She doesn't want to go."

Thomas laughed quietly.

"You don't understand the situation."

"I understand enough."

Thomas glanced past him.

His eyes landed on Elena.

The expression on his face changed.

Not concern.

Disappointment.

Like she was a problem he had come to collect.

"Elena."

She looked down.

"Thomas."

"You disappeared without telling anyone."

"I was trapped in a stagecoach accident."

Thomas shook his head.

"Always an excuse."

Caleb's eyes narrowed.

"Excuse?"

Thomas ignored him.

"Elena, these people in town have been worried."

A lie.

Caleb knew it immediately.

Because Elena's expression told him everything.

She had not been missed.

She had been searched for.

There was a difference.

"Worried about what?" Caleb asked.

Thomas looked at him.

"About what she might do."

The fire behind Elena seemed to become colder.

Caleb stepped outside.

Closing the door behind him.

"Careful."

Thomas smiled.

"You're defending her?"

"Yes."

"You don't even know her."

Caleb looked toward the cabin.

Then back at Thomas.

"I know enough."

The sheriff cleared his throat.

"Caleb, this isn't your fight."

Caleb stared at him.

"Funny."

The sheriff looked uncomfortable.

"Why?"

"Because none of you came through that storm to save her."

Silence.

The men looked away.

Caleb continued.

"You came after."

Thomas's smile disappeared.

"You don't know what you're getting involved in."

"Then tell me."

Thomas hesitated.

Just for a second.

But Caleb noticed.

"What is she accused of?"

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Caleb looked back at Elena through the window.

She was standing near the fireplace.

Small.

Silent.

Waiting for the same rejection she had received her entire life.

And something inside Caleb burned.

Not anger.

Something stronger.

Protection.

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Caleb, people in town know the truth about Elena."

"No."

Caleb shook his head.

"People in town know the story they created about her."

Thomas's face hardened.

"You think you're some hero now?"

Caleb stepped closer.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I just think a person deserves to be heard before she's condemned."

For the first time, Thomas looked uncertain.

Only for a moment.

Then he reached inside his coat.

He pulled out a folded document.

Caleb's eyes dropped to it.

"What is that?"

Thomas unfolded the paper.

"A legal order."

Elena saw it through the window.

Her expression changed.

"No..."

Caleb turned.

"What?"

She whispered.

"He can't have that."

Thomas heard her.

And smiled.

"So she remembers."

Caleb looked between them.

"What is it?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena slowly walked toward the door.

Her hands were shaking.

"That paper says I belong to him."

The words landed like a gunshot.

Caleb stared at Thomas.

"Belong?"

Thomas shrugged.

"Her father signed an agreement before he died."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"My father never would."

Thomas looked at her coldly.

"You don't know what your father did."

She stepped back.

The pain on her face was not fear anymore.

It was betrayal.

Because there was something she had never told Caleb.

Something she had buried for years.

Caleb noticed.

"Elena."

She looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

Her lips trembled.

"Because I didn't tell you the whole truth."

The wind howled outside.

Thomas folded the document.

"You should listen to her."

Caleb looked at Elena.

"What truth?"

She opened her mouth.

But no words came.

Because the truth was heavier than the snow covering the mountains.

Thomas spoke first.

"Elena wasn't abandoned by this town."

Caleb stared at him.

"She ran away."

Elena closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

Caleb waited.

Not for Thomas.

For her.

Finally, Elena whispered:

"I didn't run because I was guilty."

She looked toward the window.

"I ran because they were going to force me to marry him."

The cabin became completely silent.

Caleb slowly turned toward Thomas.

The man's calm expression was gone.

"That is a serious accusation."

Thomas smiled.

"No one will believe her."

Elena looked down.

And Caleb realized something.

That was why she was afraid.

Not because the story was complicated.

Because she had already lived in a world where nobody believed her.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Caleb, give her to us."

Caleb did not answer.

Thomas's voice became colder.

"Or tomorrow morning, everyone in town will know you helped a criminal escape."

Caleb stared at him.

Then slowly closed the door.

Locking it.

The men outside were silent.

Elena looked at him.

"You shouldn't have done that."

Caleb turned.

"Why?"

"Because now they will come after you too."

He walked back toward the fire.

"Let them."

She looked at him.

"Why would you do this?"

Caleb had no answer.

Not one he could explain.

Because something had changed the moment he found her beneath the snow.

The world had tried to convince Elena she was worthless.

But Caleb saw something different.

A woman who had survived being hated.

A woman who still chose kindness.

A woman who deserved someone to stand beside her.

Before he could speak, a loud crash came from outside.

Not knocking.

Something heavier.

Elena froze.

Caleb reached for his rifle.

Then he heard it.

A voice from the darkness.

A voice that did not belong to Thomas.

A voice that made Elena cover her mouth in terror.

"Elena..."

She whispered a name.

A name Caleb had never heard before.

May you like

And then the voice outside said it again.

"Your father told me where you were hiding."
