Chapter 9 - A Father’s Final Mission

General Carter placed a classified file on the table.
"Your wife left this for you before she disappeared."
I opened the file and found a hidden recording from twelve years ago.
Former Colonel Elias Vale watched his wife’s final message and discovered the true leader of Project Guardian.
But the last sentence on the recording changed everything:
"Do not trust the person who comes to save you."
I realized the final enemy was closer than anyone imagined.
Nobody spoke after General Carter finished.
The room was filled with people who had spent years hiding pieces of the truth.
Arthur Thorne.
Julian Thorne.
Miriam Thorne.
Marcus Reed.
And now Carter.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone had an explanation.
But only one person had the full picture.
The person who started everything.
I looked at Carter.
"You expect me to believe you?"
He didn't react.
That was something I remembered about him.
General Carter had always been difficult to read.
During missions, he could stand in the middle of chaos and look completely calm.
That was either a valuable quality...
or a dangerous one.
"You shouldn't."
The answer surprised me.
Carter continued.
"After everything you've discovered tonight, trust is a luxury you can't afford."
Marcus looked at him.
"Then why are you here?"
Carter looked toward Audrey.
"Because she deserves the truth."
The room went quiet.
Audrey stood beside me.
She had spent eight months trapped by lies.
I wasn't going to let another person hide behind them.
I reached for the file.
"Explain."
Carter nodded.
"Your wife knew Guardian would come after Audrey."
I opened the file.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Reports.
But the most important thing was a small device attached to the folder.
A recording.
I looked at Carter.
"What is this?"
"Her final message."
My hand stopped.
Twelve years.
Twelve years of wondering.
Twelve years of questions.
Where did she go?
Why did she leave?
Why didn't she come back?
And now, after all this time...
I had a chance to hear her voice again.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then silence.
Then...
"Elias."
My heart stopped.
Audrey covered her mouth.
Because she recognized her too.
Her mother.
My wife.
The woman we both thought we lost forever.
"If you are hearing this, then I wasn't able to stop them."
Her voice was weaker than I remembered.
But it was still hers.
Still the person who had changed my entire life.
"I need you to listen carefully."
A pause.
"They will tell you many things."
The recording crackled.
"They will tell you I was unstable."
My eyes moved toward Julian.
"They will tell you I ran away."
Arthur lowered his head.
"They will tell you I betrayed my family."
A pause.
"But none of that is true."
Audrey's tears fell silently.
I reached for her hand.
The recording continued.
"The truth is that I discovered what Guardian had become."
A deep breath.
"They were no longer protecting people."
"They were selecting them."
I looked at Audrey.
"Children."
The word echoed.
"They were looking for children with specific traits."
The recording paused.
"Leadership."
"Intelligence."
"Emotional control."
Then the sentence that made my entire body freeze.
"And the most important trait..."
A pause.
"Survival."
I closed my eyes.
Because suddenly I understood.
Audrey wasn't targeted because of something she had done.
She was targeted because they believed she could become something.
Something they wanted.
Something they could control.
The recording continued.
"Elias, if they find Audrey, you cannot let them take her."
A pause.
"Not even if they say it's for her protection."
My hand tightened.
Then came the final sentence.
"Do not trust the person who comes to save you."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The words remained.
Do not trust the person who comes to save you.
Everyone looked at each other.
Because the message changed everything.
Carter had appeared at the perfect moment.
He had arrived with the answers.
He had brought the file.
He had claimed to help us.
But my wife's warning wasn't about a random person.
She knew someone would come.
Someone we would believe.
I looked at Carter.
His expression didn't change.
But Marcus noticed too.
"General..."
Carter sighed.
"I knew she left that message."
The room exploded with tension.
My hand moved immediately.
Not toward a weapon.
Toward Audrey.
Protecting her.
"You knew?"
Carter nodded.
"Yes."
"And you waited twelve years?"
"I was trying to keep her hidden."
I stared at him.
"You failed."
His eyes lowered.
"Yes."
For the first time, I saw regret.
Real regret.
"I failed."
Silence.
Because a person admitting failure was more dangerous than someone defending themselves.
"What happened to my wife?"
Carter looked at the floor.
"I don't know."
Nobody believed him.
Not completely.
"You were the head of Guardian."
"At the time."
The answer caught my attention.
"At the time?"
Carter nodded.
"I discovered someone above me."
The room went still.
"Someone who had been controlling the program from the beginning."
Marcus frowned.
"That's impossible."
Carter looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"It's exactly why we never found them."
He looked at me.
"They built Guardian to have no single leader."
My eyes narrowed.
"So nobody could destroy it."
"Exactly."
A system without a head.
A machine without a weakness.
That was why it survived.
That was why it was still hunting my daughter.
I looked at Audrey.
She was listening to everything.
Every painful truth.
Every secret.
And somehow...
she was still standing.
That was when I realized something.
They had spent years trying to turn her into a weapon.
They failed.
Because they never understood her strength.
Her strength wasn't being fearless.
Her strength was surviving fear.
I turned toward Carter.
"Where are they?"
He looked at me.
"Who?"
"The people who still control Guardian."
A long silence.
Then he answered.
"There is a facility."
Marcus looked shocked.
"That place was shut down."
Carter shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"It was moved."
I understood.
The way governments hid things.
The way organizations survived.
Move.
Rename.
Disappear.
"Where?"
Carter looked at me.
"Your final mission location."
The room became silent.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
The mission that ended my career.
The mission that made me walk away.
The mission where I lost people.
The mission where I was told everyone responsible was gone.
Apparently...
they weren't.
Carter placed a small drive on the table.
"Everything you need is there."
I picked it up.
Then looked at Audrey.
She knew what I was thinking.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
I looked at her.
"I have to."
She shook her head.
"No, Dad."
A tear fell.
"Every time someone says they have to leave, they don't come back."
That sentence hit harder than any enemy ever had.
Because she wasn't talking about the mission.
She was talking about abandonment.
I walked toward her.
"I left before."
She looked down.
"Yes."
I knelt in front of her.
"But I came back."
Her eyes filled.
"And I'm coming back again."
She didn't answer.
She just held onto me.
For a moment, everything disappeared.
No Guardian.
No files.
No enemies.
Just a father and his daughter.
Then Marcus spoke.
"Colonel."
I stood.
"The facility won't stay there long."
I nodded.
I knew.
People like them always ran when exposed.
They didn't fight unless they had to.
And now...
they had to.
I looked around the room.
At the people who had been part of the truth.
Some guilty.
Some trying to fix their mistakes.
Some still hiding.
But one thing was clear.
The final battle wasn't at the mansion.
It wasn't about rescuing Audrey anymore.
She was already saved.
This was about making sure nobody else experienced what she did.
I picked up the drive.
For twenty years, I tried to bury Elias Vale the soldier.
But some battles choose you.
Some enemies don't disappear.
And some promises cannot be broken.
I looked at Audrey.
"I'll be back."
This time, she believed me.
Because she finally understood something.
Her father wasn't leaving.
He was finishing what he started.
And somewhere in the darkness...
May you like
the people behind Project Guardian were about to learn one final lesson.
They should have feared the monster they created.
