Chapter 5 - The Monster Returns

The hidden door slammed shut behind us.

"Dad... someone was in there with us."

I turned toward the darkness of the secret passage and found a dropped key card on the floor.

Former Colonel Elias Vale picked up the strange access card and discovered one name printed on it:

"Project Guardian."

But beneath the name was a symbol I had not seen in twenty years.

The symbol of the unit I was supposed to forget.

The darkness inside the hidden room felt different from ordinary darkness.

It wasn't just the absence of light.

It was the feeling that something had been taken away.

Information.

Truth.

Safety.

I stood completely still.

Audrey was behind me, breathing faster.

I could hear the fear in every breath.

"Dad."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Someone was here."

I looked down at the floor.

The door at the end of the passage was still moving slightly.

Whoever had been there had left seconds before.

Not minutes.

Seconds.

I raised my hand, signaling Audrey to stay back.

Old habits.

Old training.

Even after all these years, my body remembered.

I moved toward the passage.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Every step calculated.

The person who had escaped knew the mansion.

They knew the hidden rooms.

They knew where to run.

That meant one thing.

They were not a stranger.

I reached the end of the passage.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

But on the floor...

A small object.

A key card.

I picked it up.

The material was black.

No company logo.

No security number.

Only one word printed across the front.

"GUARDIAN."

My entire body went still.

Because I knew that word.

Not from the Thorne family.

Not from this mansion.

From my past.

A past I had buried.

A past that was supposed to be impossible to find.

Audrey stepped closer.

"What is it?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because for the first time that night...

I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Uncertainty.

Not fear.

Never fear.

But uncertainty.

I turned the card over.

On the back was a symbol.

Three lines.

A circle.

A small mark in the center.

My old unit's insignia.

The unit that officially never existed.

The unit that disappeared after my final mission.

The unit I commanded.

Audrey saw my expression.

"Dad?"

I closed my hand around the card.

"It's nothing."

She looked at me.

She knew me too well.

That answer had never worked on her.

"You're lying."

I looked at my daughter.

And for a moment, I saw the little girl who used to sit beside me while I cleaned my old military equipment.

The girl who asked why I always looked sad when I came home.

The girl who once told me:

"Dad, you don't have to be a soldier all the time."

She was right.

I had spent my entire life protecting people.

But I had forgotten something.

Sometimes the things you bury are not gone.

Sometimes they wait.

I put the card into my pocket.

"We need to leave this room."

Audrey nodded.

We walked back through the passage.

But before we reached the hidden entrance, I stopped.

A sound.

Footsteps.

Above us.

Someone was moving through the mansion.

Not running.

Walking.

Confidently.

Someone who wasn't afraid of being found.

I opened the hidden panel.

The moment we stepped back into Audrey's bedroom, the lights returned.

Perfect timing.

Too perfect.

Someone had restored power.

Someone wanted us to know they were in control.

I closed the panel.

Then I saw him.

Standing near the doorway.

Julian.

But this time...

He wasn't smiling.

"You found it."

I looked at him.

"Found what?"

His eyes moved toward my pocket.

The card.

He knew.

That confirmed everything.

"You have no idea what you're touching."

I stepped closer.

"Then explain it."

Julian looked at Audrey.

Something changed in his face.

Not kindness.

Not regret.

Something closer to guilt.

"Audrey, you need to understand..."

She interrupted him.

"No."

Her voice shook.

But she didn't look away.

"No more excuses."

Julian froze.

For eight months, she had been silent.

For eight months, he controlled every conversation.

But now she was standing beside me.

And she was speaking.

"I asked you why you were doing this."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You told me it was for my own good."

Julian looked away.

"You were unstable."

Audrey shook her head.

"I was afraid."

Silence.

"You knew I was afraid."

Julian had no answer.

Because fear could not be explained away.

Not when the person who caused it was standing in front of you.

I stepped between them.

"Who is behind this?"

Julian looked at me.

"I don't know."

I watched his face.

People lie with words.

But bodies tell the truth.

His shoulders tightened.

His eyes moved away.

He knew something.

"Try again."

His voice became angry.

"You think you can walk into my house and threaten me?"

I stared at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm giving you a chance."

That surprised him.

"What?"

"To tell me the truth before the people who used you decide you are no longer useful."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Because that was the first time he considered the possibility.

He wasn't the powerful one.

He was disposable.

Julian looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered his voice.

"There was a man."

Audrey went still.

"What man?"

Julian swallowed.

"I never saw his face."

"Then how did you know him?"

"He contacted my father first."

Arthur.

Again.

The name kept appearing.

Julian continued.

"He said he could fix everything."

I looked at him.

"Everything?"

"He said Audrey was a risk."

My hand tightened.

"A risk to what?"

Julian didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Because Audrey already knew.

"My mother."

Julian looked at her.

And the silence confirmed it.

Audrey stepped back.

"My mother found out."

Julian looked down.

"Yes."

The word hit harder than any confession.

Because after twelve years...

we finally had the truth.

Her mother had not been lost.

She had been hunted.

I looked at Julian.

"What happened to her?"

His face became pale.

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It's the truth."

He looked at Audrey.

"The night she disappeared... she came here."

My daughter froze.

"Why?"

Julian hesitated.

"Because she found out about Project Guardian."

The name again.

My past.

My unit.

My secret.

I felt something awaken inside me.

A memory.

A mission from twenty years ago.

A mission that ended with people disappearing.

A mission where I was told everyone involved had been eliminated.

Apparently, someone had lied.

Julian continued.

"Your mother wanted to expose them."

"Who?"

He looked at me.

Not Audrey.

Me.

And that was when I understood.

The person behind everything wasn't afraid of Audrey.

They were afraid of what I knew.

"Who is Project Guardian?"

Julian whispered:

"The people who trained you."

The room went silent.

Because there was only one organization that could answer that.

The organization I had spent thirty years protecting.

The organization that had created me.

And the organization I believed had died with my retirement.

My phone vibrated.

One message.

No number.

No name.

Just three words.

"Leave her alone."

I looked at the screen.

Then at Audrey.

Then back at the message.

A threat.

But not against me.

Against my daughter.

I slowly put the phone away.

Julian watched me.

"What are you going to do?"

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the mansion gates were still closed.

The world still believed I was just an old retired soldier.

A father who arrived too late.

They were wrong.

For years, I buried the person I used to be.

I wanted a quiet life.

I wanted peace.

I wanted to grow old without becoming that man again.

But they made one mistake.

They hurt the one person I couldn't lose.

I turned toward Audrey.

"Stay close to me."

She nodded.

Then I looked at Julian.

"Tonight ends differently than you planned."

I walked downstairs.

Not as a father searching for answers.

Not as a retired colonel.

But as the man everyone thought was gone.

The Monster.

May you like

And somewhere outside the mansion...

someone was about to remember why my name had once been feared.
