Chapter 8 - The Last Enemy Standing

Arthur Thorne opened the hidden drawer beneath his desk.
"I know where your wife hid the original files."
I watched the old man place a small metal case on the table.
Former Colonel Elias Vale discovered the final secret of Project Guardian inside the case.
But written on the first page was a name he never expected to see:
"Audrey Vale."
I realized the enemy had never been trying to destroy my daughter.
They had been preparing her.
The room remained silent after Arthur spoke.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone understood what those words meant.
Arthur Thorne knew.
Not suspected.
Not guessed.
Knew.
He knew where my wife hid the truth.
He knew what Project Guardian was.
He knew why Audrey had been targeted.
And he had spent eight months pretending he didn't.
I stared at him across the room.
The man who had welcomed me into his mansion with a glass of bourbon.
The man who watched while my daughter suffered upstairs.
The man who acted like he was powerless.
"You knew everything."
Arthur didn't deny it.
That was the first thing that surprised me.
Most guilty people started with excuses.
They blamed circumstances.
They blamed other people.
They tried to create distance between themselves and what happened.
Arthur didn't.
He simply looked tired.
"I knew enough."
Audrey stepped forward.
"Enough to let them hurt me?"
Her voice cracked.
Arthur looked at her.
For a moment, I saw something unexpected.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret didn't erase eight months.
It didn't erase fear.
It didn't erase the locked door.
"You don't understand what was at stake."
Audrey shook her head.
"No."
She wiped away a tear.
"I understand perfectly."
The room became still.
"You decided my life was worth sacrificing."
Arthur looked away.
Because she was right.
I moved closer to the desk.
"You have one chance."
Arthur looked at me.
"To tell me everything."
He studied my face.
Then he laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he finally understood something.
The man standing in front of him was not the retired colonel who came through his gates.
That man was gone.
"You really don't remember, do you?"
My expression didn't change.
"Remember what?"
Arthur opened the metal case.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Old mission reports.
And one object that immediately caught my attention.
A military identification tag.
My old unit's tag.
The one I thought was destroyed after my final mission.
I picked it up.
My fingers tightened around it.
"Where did you get this?"
Arthur looked at me.
"Your wife gave it to me."
The room froze.
Audrey looked at me.
"Mom?"
I stared at Arthur.
"Explain."
He sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked like an old man.
Not a powerful businessman.
Not a member of a wealthy family.
Just someone carrying a heavy secret.
"Your wife discovered what Guardian had become."
I waited.
"Originally, it was created to protect people."
He looked at the documents.
"To identify threats before they happened."
I knew that part.
I was there when it started.
But I also knew where it went wrong.
"Then someone changed the rules."
Arthur nodded.
"Exactly."
The word hung in the air.
"People stopped asking who was dangerous."
A pause.
"They started asking who could be controlled."
My stomach tightened.
Because I knew.
I had seen the warning signs.
Years before I left.
Small decisions.
Small compromises.
Things that seemed harmless.
Until they weren't.
Arthur continued.
"Your wife found proof that Guardian had created profiles on families."
Audrey looked confused.
"Families?"
Arthur nodded.
"Children."
The room became colder.
"They weren't looking for enemies."
He looked at me.
"They were looking for potential assets."
My eyes moved toward Audrey.
No.
I already knew where this was going.
"Your daughter was identified before she was born."
Audrey stepped back.
"What?"
Arthur looked at her.
"Your mother discovered it."
My hands slowly closed.
Everything suddenly connected.
The files.
The monitoring.
The obsession with Audrey.
They weren't trying to punish her.
They were trying to claim her.
"What made her important?"
Arthur looked at me.
"You."
Silence.
"My daughter was targeted because of me?"
Arthur nodded.
"Because of your training."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I had spent my life believing my work protected my family.
Now I was discovering my work had put them in danger.
Audrey looked at me.
"Dad..."
I turned toward her.
The guilt inside me was heavier than anything I had carried before.
But I couldn't let her see that.
Not now.
"You were never a weapon."
My voice was quiet.
"You were never a project."
She looked at me.
"You believe that?"
I held her gaze.
"More than anything."
Arthur watched us.
Then he pushed the metal case toward me.
"Your wife knew they would come for Audrey eventually."
I opened the first document.
A profile.
Audrey Vale.
Date of birth.
Medical history.
Education.
Everything.
But at the bottom...
A classification.
"Guardian Successor Candidate."
My blood turned cold.
Successor.
Not subject.
Not target.
Successor.
"They wanted her to replace you."
Arthur said it quietly.
I looked at him.
"No."
He nodded.
"Yes."
I closed the file.
"They wanted my daughter to become what I was."
Arthur didn't answer.
Because there was no need.
I understood.
A new generation.
A new weapon.
A new soldier.
Except they made one mistake.
They forgot Audrey wasn't me.
She wasn't trained.
She wasn't created for war.
She was a person.
And I would destroy anyone who tried to take that from her.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone turned.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
"Movement."
The mansion went silent.
Then the lights turned off.
Again.
But this time...
we knew what it meant.
Someone was inside.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be.
Marcus looked at me.
"They bypassed our security."
I nodded.
"How many?"
He checked his device.
Then frowned.
"One."
One person.
That was worse.
A group relied on strength.
One person relied on confidence.
Footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
Unhurried.
Whoever it was wanted us to hear them coming.
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Military posture.
Everyone raised their weapons.
Except me.
Because I knew him.
Or at least I knew the name.
Marcus whispered:
"Impossible."
The man looked at me.
"Elias."
I couldn't move.
Because the person standing in front of me was someone I buried twenty years ago.
Someone whose death ended my final mission.
Someone who should not have been alive.
"General Carter."
Audrey looked at me.
"Dad?"
I didn't answer.
Because my entire world had shifted again.
The man smiled slightly.
"You always were difficult to remove."
My eyes narrowed.
"You were behind this?"
He looked around the room.
At the files.
At Audrey.
At the people who had finally discovered the truth.
"No."
A pause.
"I was trying to stop it."
Nobody moved.
I didn't trust him.
Not yet.
Not after everything.
"Then why are you here?"
General Carter looked at Audrey.
And his expression changed.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Concern.
"Because they know you found the files."
I stepped forward.
"Who?"
His answer came immediately.
"The person who created Guardian."
A silence.
Then he said the words I never expected.
"The person who gave the order to erase your family."
My heart stopped.
Because suddenly Arthur wasn't the final enemy.
Julian wasn't.
The Thorne family wasn't.
They were only pieces.
The real person had been hidden all along.
General Carter looked at me.
"And Elias..."
A pause.
"They know you're coming for them."
I looked at Audrey.
Then at the door.
The war I had tried to escape for twenty years had finally revealed itself.
But this time...
I wasn't fighting alone.
May you like
Because this time, I had something I never had before.
A reason to come home.
