Chapter 6 - The Secret Hidden In Daniel's House

Daniel couldn't move.
The voice on the phone kept repeating in his mind.
"Your daughter is still alive."
Eight years.
Eight years of believing his family was gone.
Eight years of believing Emily was dead.
Eight years of believing there was nothing left to find.
And now everything he knew was collapsing.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Emily was watching him.
She already knew.
"What did they say?"
Daniel looked at her.
His eyes were filled with confusion and anger.
"They said my daughter is alive."
Emily froze.
For a moment, even the snow seemed to stop.
Lily looked between them.
"Mr. Whitmore..."
Daniel looked at the little girl.
"Did you know?"
Lily shook her head quickly.
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"My mom never told me about a daughter."
Daniel turned back to Emily.
"Explain."
Emily looked away.
She had spent years hiding the truth.
But now there was nowhere left to run.
"Daniel..."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"Not another secret."
Emily closed her eyes.
"You deserve the truth."
The man across the street watched them carefully.
He didn't interrupt.
Because he knew this moment mattered.
Emily took a deep breath.
"Eight years ago, before the accident, you had a daughter."
Daniel's face changed.
"No."
Emily nodded.
"Her name was Sophie."
The name felt familiar.
But impossible.
Daniel shook his head.
"I never had a daughter."
Emily looked at him sadly.
"Because Richard made sure you believed that."
Daniel's hands tightened.
"What are you saying?"
Emily stepped closer.
"When you were building the company, you were working almost every day. You trusted Richard with everything."
Daniel didn't answer.
Because it was true.
Richard had been the person who handled the details Daniel didn't have time for.
"The night Sophie was born, Richard told you there were complications."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Wait."
Emily continued.
"He told you the baby didn't survive."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"No."
"He showed you documents."
Daniel remembered.
The hospital papers.
The doctor's signature.
The funeral.
The grief.
Everything.
Emily whispered:
"They were fake."
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then at the ground.
His entire life had been built on a lie.
A lie carefully designed by someone he trusted.
"Why would Richard do that?"
Emily looked toward the black vehicle.
"Because your daughter was connected to something he needed."
Daniel looked confused.
"Connected to what?"
Emily reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a small old envelope.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
Daniel stared at it.
A name was written on it.
Sophie Whitmore.
His hands started shaking.
"I kept this because I knew one day you would need proof."
Daniel touched the bracelet.
A memory came back.
A tiny hand.
A baby's cry.
A woman smiling.
A life he never got to have.
He closed his eyes.
"Where is she?"
Emily looked at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"On whether Richard has found her first."
The words terrified him.
Daniel looked at the man across the street.
"You know where she is."
The man smiled slightly.
"I know where Richard took her."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Tell me."
The man didn't move.
"First, you need to understand something."
"What?"
"Richard wasn't trying to destroy you."
Daniel frowned.
"Then what was he doing?"
The man looked directly at him.
"He was preparing to replace you."
Silence.
The words felt impossible.
Daniel stared.
"What does that mean?"
The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone.
He opened a video.
Then held it up.
On the screen was Richard.
Sitting inside Daniel's office.
The office Daniel had built.
The office where Richard had stood beside him for years.
But Richard wasn't alone.
There was another person sitting across from him.
A woman.
Daniel couldn't see her face.
Until she turned.
His breathing stopped.
Because he knew her.
The woman from the photograph.
Anna.
Lily's mother.
But she wasn't afraid.
She wasn't trapped.
She was sitting there willingly.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"What is this?"
Emily looked shocked.
"I don't know."
The video continued.
Richard placed a file on the desk.
Anna opened it.
Then she said something.
The audio was unclear.
The man paused the video.
"There's more."
Daniel looked at him.
"Where did you get this?"
The man ignored the question.
"Watch the rest."
He pressed play.
Richard leaned closer to Anna.
Then he said clearly:
"Once Daniel is gone, everything belongs to us."
Daniel felt sick.
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Emily looked at Lily.
The little girl was confused.
"Why would my mom do that?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"You said Anna helped you."
Emily nodded slowly.
"I thought she did."
"But?"
Emily looked at the phone.
"But maybe she was helping both sides."
The possibility hurt.
Daniel had spent one night believing he finally found the truth.
Now even the truth had become another question.
The man across the street stepped closer.
"Daniel."
He looked up.
"Richard knows you have Lily."
Daniel immediately looked at her.
"What?"
The man continued.
"He knows Emily is alive."
Emily's face changed.
"That's impossible."
"No."
The man shook his head.
"Because Richard wanted you to find them."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Why?"
The man looked at him.
"Because there is something inside your house."
Daniel frowned.
"My house?"
"Something Richard couldn't find."
Daniel thought about it.
"The flash drive?"
The man shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Lily.
"Something her mother left behind."
Lily suddenly spoke.
"My mom said there was a room."
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel crouched down.
"What room?"
She looked scared.
"She told me never to open it."
Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.
"Where?"
Lily pointed.
"Your house."
The answer made everyone silent.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"Daniel, we can't go there."
"Why?"
Emily's voice dropped.
"Because if Richard left something there, he also left someone watching it."
Daniel looked toward his car.
The snow was falling heavier.
But he knew one thing.
He couldn't run anymore.
Not from Richard.
Not from the truth.
Not from the daughter he lost.
He turned toward Lily.
"We're going home."
Emily immediately grabbed his arm.
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Because the last person who went into that room never came out."
Daniel froze.
"Who?"
Emily didn't answer.
She only looked at Lily.
The little girl slowly reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
"I found this before we left."
Daniel took it.
There was only one sentence written on it.
A sentence that made his blood run cold.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Richard finally found you."
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then the house in the distance.
His house.
The place where every secret began.
They drove through the snow in silence.
When they arrived, the front door was already open.
Daniel stopped the car.
Nobody moved.
Because he knew.
Someone had been waiting.
Emily whispered:
"We were too late."
Daniel stepped out slowly.
The house lights were on.
But he had turned them off before leaving.
He walked toward the entrance.
The door moved slightly in the wind.
Then he noticed something carved into the wooden frame.
A message.
His name.
And beneath it:
"Come inside, Dad."
May you like
Daniel reached for the door handle.
It was already unlocked from the inside. Someone was waiting for him.
